Bertha Florine Turner

Bertha Florine Turner, age 104, of McDonough, Georgia passed away on January 1, 2008. Miss Turner was born in Henry County, the daughter of the late Adella Abi Fargason and William Jefferson Turner. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sister, James Roy Turner, Rosa Lou Turner Russell, Jefferson Blakely Turner, and Roderick Greer Turner, and by one niece, Mrs. Julia Turner Low of Jacksonville, Florida, as well as three nephews, Roderick Greer Turner, Jr. of Jonesboro, William Leslie Turner of Houston, Texas and James Roy Turner, Jr. of McDonough.

Miss Turner was an active member of Turner United Methodist Church from her youth until she was 99 when her loving church members dedicated a Sunday service to her and encouraged her to “Go for a 100.” Miss Turner attended Wesleyan College in Macon where she graduated in 1925. That same year she began teaching her major, English, in Gainesville. Soon she was teaching Senior English and continued for 30 years. She left to teach Senior English for 13 more years in Griffin retiring in 1968 with a total of 43 years of service to Georgia students, some of whom were still in touch with her.

Listed below are Miss Bertha’s still living nephew, Tom Rivers Turner (Doris) of Memphis, Tennessee; six great-nephews and six great-nieces, who together with their twenty seven children and grandchildren are pleased to speak of her as “Great Aunt Bertha” which they do with loving pride; for she is to them the best role model and inspiration for living “the good life”. They are Mrs. Susan T. Hamilton of Lawrenceville, Mrs. David Stewart (Sally) of Dawsonville, Mrs. Norman McCollough (Paula) of Colleyville, Texas , Col. Rod G. Turner, III (Alix) of Levenworth, Kansas, Ms. Elissabeth (Lisa) C. Turner of Memphis, Tennessee, Mrs. Monty R. Pantz (Terri) of Cordova, Tennessee, Mrs. Clayton Garet (Claudia) of Jasper, Mr. Ron R. Turner (Marty) of Magnolia, Texas , Mr. L. Lee Turner (Angelia) of League City, Texas , Mr. Merrel C. Low (Past), of Foley, Alabama, Mr. James R. Turner, III, (Fran), and Mr. J. Blakely Turner, II (Carol) of McDonough.

Funeral services were held January 5 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Rev. Michael O’Johns officiating. Interment McDonough City Cemetery. Those who wish may make a donation in her memory to a charity of their choice. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.

Helen Bexley English

Helen Bexley English, age 82, of Stockbridge, Georgia, a former resident of Newnan, died January 4, 2008. She was born in Moreland to the late Ralph Emerson and Ruth Emma Haynes Bexley. She enjoyed gardening and fishing, but most important to her was her family.

Mrs. English is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Patrick Orrell of Stockbridge; granddaughter, Phyllis and Todd Newsome of Locust Grove; grandson, Phil and Ashley Orrell of Bishop; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Harry Bexley of Atlanta, Glenn Bexley of Newnan and James Bexley of McDonough. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace English and siblings, Faye Wilson, R.E. Bexley, Stanley Bexley, and Billy Bexley.

Funeral services were held January 6 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors. Interment South View Cemetery in Moreland, Georgia. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.

Larry Edsel Martin

Mr. Larry Edsel Martin, age 59, of McDonough, Georgia died January 4, 2008. Mr. Martin was born in Nashville, Tennessee the son of the late Alene Frances Bullington and Edsel Ford Martin. Larry served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam from 1968-1970. He enjoyed being with his family and friends and playing jokes on everyone. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. A grandchild, Katelyn Mann, preceded Larry in death.

Survivors are his wife, Brenda Martin of McDonough; children, Wendy Martin and Christian Johnson of Canton, Troy and Toni Martin of McDonough; grandchildren, Brandon and Tanner Martin; sister, Julia Larkin; brothers Jerry and Rodger Martin all of Tennessee; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Mr. Martin was held December 6 at the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Weaver officiating. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Andrew Kyle Rogers

Andrew Kyle Rogers, age 19, of Hampton, Georgia died January 5, 2008. He was born in Atlanta. Andrew attended Luella High School and Patrick Henry High School.

Andrew is survived by his parents, David and Kami Rogers; brothers, Jason Rogers and Sean Rogers, all of Hampton; grandparents, Debbie Blanton of Hampton, Sherley and David Rogers of Lewisburg, Kentucky; great-grandparents, Edith and Richard Horne, Jacksonville, Florida; uncles and aunt, Billy and Christy Rogers, Justin Blanton, Shane Blanton; and great-aunt and uncle, Donna and James Morris; girlfriend, Jessica Mabry; and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10 at the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Rev. Dudley Rose officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 9, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Wilson Worden

Mr. Lloyd Wilson Worden, Jr., age 79, of McDonough, Georgia died January 4, 2008. Mr. Worden was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Genevieve Barber and Lloyd Wilson Worden, Sr. Mr. Worden was a member of St. James Catholic Church, he retired with 30 years as an engineering technician with Chrysler, and was a member of The Knights of Columbus. Mr. Worden enjoyed his family, golfing, boating, and was known for being a detail Handy Man.

Survivors are his wife, Jackie Worden of McDonough; children, Lynn and Ken Cox of McDonough, Lloyd and Kathy Worden of McDonough, Mary Jo and Robert Kite of McDonough and James and Vickie Worden of White Lake, Michigan; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren

A Memorial Mass for Mr. Worden was held January 7 at St. James Catholic Church. Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough in charge of arrangements.

Grover Lamar Russell

Mr. Grover Lamar Russell, age 89, of McDonough, Georgia died January 5, 2008. Mr. Russell was born in Henry County, the son of the late Cleo Knight and Grover Buchanan Russell. He was a life-long member of Timberridge Presbyterian Church, he graduated McDonough High School Class of 1936, worked at Planters Warehouse during high school and joined them full time after WWII, he attended Maryville College for 3 years, he joined the US Army in 1941 and retired Army Reserves as a Major with 20 years of service receiving 2 purple hearts and a bronze star, he retired from Planters Warehouse as President with 47 years. Mr. Russell received a life membership with the McDonough Kiwanis Club after 35 years. He was very active as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, The Food Pantry and many other volunteer ventures. His wife, Evelyn Benson Russell; siblings, Louise Stanton, Grace Salter and Elizabeth Farguson preceded him in death.

Survivors are his children, Ray and Becky Russell, Janet and Shane Shellnutt, Bill Russell and Brenda Kendrick, Beth and Danny Steele all of McDonough; grandchildren, Scott Russell, Billy Russell, Cody Steele, Robert Russell, Kelsey Steele, Lauren Dail, J.T. Shellnutt, Hope Shellnutt, and Katie Russell; great grandchildren, Hannah and Gabe Russell; siblings, Catherine Bohanon of Conyers, Ruth Waldrop and J.B. Russell of McDonough; several step children; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Russell were held January 8 at Timberridge Presbyterian Church with Rev. Matt Allison officiating. Interment church cemetery. For those who wish in lieu of flowers may make donations to Timberridge Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2704 Conyers Rd., McDonough, GA 30252. Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough in charge of arrangements.

Margie Louise Ratley Britt

Mrs. Margie Louise Ratley Britt, age 64, of Morrow, Georgia died January 6, 2008. Mrs. Britt was born in Fulton County the daughter of the late Donald Hardin Ratley and Ruby Ruth Nations Ratley of Lawrenceville.

She is also survived by her husband, Donald Britt of Morrow; children, Pamela Simpson of Jonesboro, Terrell Simpson of Marietta, and Cheryl Layshot of Bakersville, California; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; twin sister, Mary Knight of McDonough; sister, Phyllis Bolt of Locust Grove; brothers, Ronnie Ratley of Lawrenceville and Gary Ratley of Barnesville; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mrs. Britt will be held January 12 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Mike Bell officiating. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
