Newt Audley Roberts, 73
Elder Newt Audley Roberts, 73, passed away Friday, March 2, 2007, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Center in Statesboro. Elder Roberts was born on March 16, 1933, near Sylvania, GA. He was the son of Newt E. and Lola Taylor Roberts. He moved with his parents to Savannah when he was three. There he attended public schools and graduated from Commercial High School in June 1951. He attended Young Harris College and Georgia Southern College. He was licensed in the Ministry by the Savannah Primitive Baptist Church in June 1954 and ordained in his home church in December of 1954. His pastorate included the Savannah Primitive Baptist Church, Swainsboro Primitive Baptist Church, Bethesda Primitive Church, Baptist Rest Primitive Baptist Church, Augusta Primitive Baptist Church, Rome Primitive Baptist Church, and Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was the former owner and administrator to Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Guyton. He also served as the administrator of Bethany Home in Millen and Circle Drive Nursing Home in Augusta.
He is survived by his wife, Reba Benton Roberts of Glennville; four daughters and sons - in - law, Terri and Mitch Flanders of Lilburn, Glenda Jhuraminoli of Long Island, NY, Mary Ann and John Waters of Glennville and Faye and Marty Glisson of Claxton; a son and daughter - in - law, Bubba and Sherry Blocker of Claxton; nineteen grandchildren, thirteen great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 5 at 3 p.m. at Loves Chapel Baptist Church in Glennville. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jared Blocker, Wesley Waters, Marty Glisson, Bubba Blocker, John Waters and Mitch Flanders. Honorary pallbears were Primitive Baptist Elders.

Tom Linder Stubbs, 63
Tom Linder Stubbs, 63, of Alma, died Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Bacon County after an extended illness. He was admitted to the Bacon County Hospital two weeks prior to being moved to Twin Oaks. He had been in and out of several hospitals since July 2006. He was a native of Tattnall County, but had lived in Alma since 1982. He was the son of the late Luther Stubbs and Geneva Wilds Stubbs and was preceded in death by two brothers, Martin L. Stubbs and Harry T. Stubbs; a sister, Betty Dean Stubbs, and a granddaughter, Ashley Stubbs. Tom was a veteran of the Vietnam War while serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion Post #96. He was an avid fisherman and gardener who always loved to share with family, friends and neighbors. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was a loving father, husband and brother.
Survivors include his wife, Vonzille Padgett Stubbs of Alma; three sons, Thomas D. Stubbs of Alma, Tommy D. Stubbs of Reidsville and Terry D. Stubbs of Van Buren, AR; three brothers, Douglas M. (Bill) Stubbs of Collins, Herman T. Stubbs of Reidsville and Henry H. Stubbs of Niva, MO; six sisters, Jetti T. Howard of Glennville, Nadine Anderson and Jean Deal, both of Reidsville, Inez Hughes of Collins and Montez Todd and Sadie Durrence both of Glennville; four grandchildren, four step - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at the Alma First Baptist Church with Reverend Lance Wade, Reverend R.B. Gaskin and Reverend Charles Barnard officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Tootle, Gene Tootle, Gilbert Tootle, Danny Bryant, Dr. Perry Streat and Jamie Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were members of The American Legion, Houston Jarrard, Win One Sunday School Class, Linda Edgar, R.T. Vera Jones Tatum, 91
Vera Jones Tatum, 91, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native was a homemaker and a member of Battle Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Dwight Tatum of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Betty and Wayne Kennedy of Glennville and Marjorie and Lemmon McCorkle of Claxton; sister, Janie Ruth Purcell of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; 15 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder W.H. Durrence and Reverend Hugh Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Battle Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joey McCorkle, Terry McCorkle, Reese McCorkle, Tony Kennedy, Tommy Kennedy and Dana Kennedy.

Henry Sellers Wright, 64
Mr. Henry Sellers Wright was born on November 14, 1942, to the late Horace and Sallie Lowery Wright. He was the youngest of 14 children and very proud to tell that he was Sallie Wright’s baby boy. He departed this life on February 19, 2007.
He professed a love for Christ at an early age while attending St. James’ AME Church where his mother faithfully served in Glennville, GA.
His education was attained through the public schools of Glennville, GA and Lambertville, NJ. Additional training was received throughout his military career of over 24 years in the U.S. Air Force. While in the military, he also attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill.
During his illustrious military career, he received two Meritorious Outstanding Service Medals (one Oak Leaf Cluster) and as a flight engineer, he logged approximately 700 flying hours. One of his proudest achievements was flying the prisoners of war to freedom out of Vietnam. Upon his retirement from the military, he was recognized by “Who’s Who in the Southwest.” He then went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring a second time. Brother Henry Wright was a proud member of Central Star Lodge #1631, I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, Austin, a former volunteer for the Austin Police Dept. Handicap Parking Program and an AARP member.
His vibrant personality was outgoing and friendly, he met no strangers. For relaxation he enjoyed a challenging game of Chess (holding the title of Webb AFB Chess Champion for two consecutive years during the 60s) or a game of Pinochle. He always encouraged others to aim high and do their best and a favorite saying to his children and grandchildren was, “Get an education so you can do something for yourself.”
Survivors include his wife, Alma; son, Gerry (Eva); stepdaughter, Sheila; step - sons, Stanley (Ella) and Gregory; grandchildren, Allen (Mary), Africa, Anthony, Stanley Jr., and Ayesha; great - grandchildren, Keyshaan, D’Aaron, Erin and Teghan; brothers, Horace (Pat), Glenn (Carol), L.V. (Rose) and Ernest; sisters, Olivia, Susie, Margaret and Novella (Ruben) and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Monday, February 26, 2007, at the Cook - Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, TX with Brother George M. Williams, Minister of Eastside Church of Christ, officiating. Entombment is in the Mausoleum of Cook - Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
Pallbearers were the Military Honor Detail from Lackland Air Force Base.
Teri Anderson, 59
Mrs. Teri Anderson, 59 of 1505 Connors Church Road, Cobbtown; died Saturday, February 24, 2007, in the Community Hospice House after a brief illness. She was a native of Waynesboro, living most her life in Toombs County and most recently in Cobbtown. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Vidalia and was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Anderson; her parents, Lamar and Lucile Wrenn Cochran and two sisters, Carolyn Davis and June Frazier.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by two daughters, Chrystal Waller and husband, Homer of Vidalia and Lisa Ricketts and husband, Richard of Athens; five grandchildren, Ali and Tom Waller of Vidalia and Olivia, Peyton and Gracie Ricketts of Athens; one sister, Marsha Inman and husband, Robert of Dawsonville, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services for Mrs. Teri Anderson were held Monday, February 26, 2007, in the Chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Reverend Bucky Kennedy and Reverend Bill Ricketts officiating.

Mr. James E. (J.E.) Boyett, 63, of Collins died on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Boyett of Collins; sons, Chris Boyett of Shellman’s Bluff, Keith Boyett of Claxton and Jamie Boyett of Collins; brothers, Earl Boyett of Reidsville, Carl Boyett of Horshoe, NC, Gary Boyett of Manassas, Jerry Boyett of Reidsville, Floyd Boyett of Manassas, Wayne Boyett of Reidsville and Joe Neal Boyett of Atlanta; sisters, Lois Ann Boyett of Manassas, Helen Summer of Adrian, Kay Jerrigan of Manassas, Jean Terrell of Glennville and Connie Norton of Raleigh, NC; seven grandchildren, Erica Nesmith, Ashley Glisson, Kristen Boyett, Lacy Carmack, Dallas Schondelmayer, Kaleb Boyett and Alexis Roberts; two great - grandchildren, Kassie Jordan and Trenton Glisson.
Graveside funeral services were held on Friday, February 23, 2007, in the Old Anderson cemetery in Tattnall County.

Yevonne Brown, 85
Yevonne Brown, 85, died Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at the Metter Nursing Home. The Tattnall County and lifelong resident was the daughter of the late Willie L. Brown and Kate Collins Brown. She was a graduate of Brenau Academy and Brenau College in Gainsville and Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University). She retired from the Tattnall County Board of Education after teaching 45 years. She was a member of the Tattnall County and Georgia Retired Teachers Association and the Cobbtown Baptist Church. For many years, she served on the board of directors of The Brown Bank, which her father founded. “Miss” Yevonne’s love of Cobbtown and community was immeasurable. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Buster Brown and three sisters, Vera Dell Carr, Rosalyn Lanier and Tera Perkins.
She is survived by a sister, Geneva Denmark of Cobbtown; nieces and nephews, Faye Parker of Cobbtown, Judy Westbrook of Lincolnton, Andy Perkins and David Perkins both of Glennville, Randy Lanier and Larry Lanier both of Jacksonville, FL and LaQuille C. Swicord of Savannah; many friends and caregivers.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 25, 2007, at Kennedy Funeral Homes Cobbtown Chapel, with Reverend Gary Page officiating. Burial followed in Sunlight Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lamar Durden, Dale Fordham, Green Thrift, Irving Brannen, Malcolm Coleman and Chris West.

Dovel Lee Conner
Mr. Dovel Lee Conner was born on December 28, 1936, in Glennville, GA, to the late Jonas and Mary Conner.
On February 20, 2007, he was called to rest in union with his departed wife, Joyce Conner.
He leaves to cherish his memories, one aunt, Madie Graham of Claxton, GA; one brother, J.C. Conner of Trenton, NY; three sisters, Carrie Bell Harris of Miami, FL, Christine Hostick of Trenton, NJ, and Willie Pearl Conner of Glennville, GA; two sisters - in - law, Margaree Mobley of Glennville, GA, and Frankie Conner of Trenton, NJ; two brothers - in - law, Mike Wyman of California and Sam Wyman of Pennsylvania; one step - brother, J.C. Smith (Ida Mae) of Ludowici, GA; three brothers preceded him in death, M.L. Conner, Jimmy Conner and Freddie Conner; two sisters, Mattie Bell Thomas and Lucie Harris; others with fond and loving memories include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 24, at Evening Light Reformation Church of God in Glennville, with interment in the church cemetery. Sister Pinkie Brown gave the Eulogy.

Vendie Hudson Hooks Jr., 85
Vendie Hudson Hooks Jr., 85, died Tuesday at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta. He was the son of the late Elder Vendie Hudson Hooks Sr. and Fleetie Yeomans Hooks. He was a graduate of Swainsboro High School and Gupton - Jones college of Mortuary Science and attended the University of Georgia. He served in the United States Coast Guard and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Hooks was a regional manager of the Veterans Administrative Office in 1944 - 45. As a member and deacon of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, he served as clerk of the Original Upper Canoochee Association of Primitive Baptist for 20 years.
V.H. and his wife, May Jones Hooks, were owners and operators of Hooks Mortuary for 46 years. He was a member of the Georgia and National Funeral Directors Associations and represented the funeral profession before the Federal Trade Commission hearings in Washington, D.C. He served as president of the Georgia Funeral Directors Association in 1975 - 1976. Mr. Hooks was the Candler County coroner for 24 years and the state mortician at Reidsville State Prison for 20 years.
He served as a president of the Metter Kiwanis Club and as a district Lt. Governor of Kiwanis. He was past Commander of the Candler County American Legion Post 108. He was past chairman of American Red Cross and the Cancer Society. He served on the board of directors of Pineland State Bank, Candler County Hospital Authority, Metter Housing Authority and Candler County Board of Education. He was a member of the Historical Society of Candler County.
He served on the state Democratic Executive Committee of Georgia and was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. He served in an honorary capacity for Governors, Herman Talmadge, Marvin Griffin, Ernest Vandiver and Carl E. Sanders and served on Advisory Committees for Congressmen Ronald Bo Ginn and Lindsay Thomas.
Mr. Hooks was the coordinator and master of ceremonies for Miss Candler County Beauty Pageant for 20 years. Giving his time to speaking and chaperoning FBLA conferences, Mr. Hooks was the first person designated Honorary Life Member of the Metter High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America. He was selected Business Person of the year in 1983 by the FBLA at the National Leadership Conference in San Francisco.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, May Jones Hooks of Metter; two sons and daughters - in - law, Dr. Vendie H. Hooks III and Carolyn of Augusta, Carson Jones Hooks and Stephanie of Norfolk, VA; six grandchildren and spouses, Vendie Hudson Hooks IV and Lauren of Atlanta, Susanna Hooks Sayer and Dr. Jason Sayer of St. Simons, David B. Hooks of Atlanta, Katherine W. Hooks of Rome, Carson J. Hooks and Julia, and Christopher H. Hooks and Elizabeth all of Austin, TX; a great - granddaughter, Elizabeth Riley Sayer; three sisters and brothers - in - law, Celeste Reese of Memphis, TN, Marcile and George M. Bird Jr. of Metter, Betty and Dr. Bobby Underwood of Jasper, AL; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Gerald and Sue Hooks and Donald and Sylvia Hooks all of Lexsy.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Metter First Baptist Church, with Elder Tommy Roundtree, Elder John Sheldon Mikell, Rev. Michael Guido and Rev. Fred Pifer officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons and John Allen Lanier, Ronald Brown and Dr. Willis Lanier. Honorary pallbearers were all former employees of Hooks Mortuary since 1946 and members of the Georgia Funeral Directors Association.
