Mr. Harry Smith, 66, of Panama City, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at his home. Born in Coward, S.C., he moved here in 1952. He was an engineer on oil field boats. Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his father, Chesley Smith. He is survived by his mother, Mary Smith of Charleston, S.C.; his wife, Anita Smith of Panama City, Fla.; one son, Ricky Smith and wife Glenda of Panama City, Fla.; three daughters, Cynthia Denham and husband Corky, Cheryl Shenberger all of Panama City, Fla., Toni Castro and husband Victor of Alabama; four brothers, Clarence Smith and wife Joanne, Larry Smith and wife Charlene, Wylie Smith and wife Elsie, Johnnie Smith all of Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 1, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

MAGDALENE D. STEWART
Mrs. Magdalene D. Stewart, 65, of Port St. Joe, passed away Sunday in Bay Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Highland View and was a member of the Highland View Church of God. She is survived by a son, DeWayne Stewart of Tallahassee; a brother, Roy Douglas of Vernon; two sisters, Irene Brewer of Marianna and Marlene Donaldson of Tallahassee; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. CST (12 p.m. EST) Wednesday at the Vernon Evangelistic Church, conducted by the Rev. Juno Douglas and the Rev. Willis Hagen. Interment will follow in the family plot in Vernon Cemetery. She will lie in state at the Comforter Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7 p.m. EST today, and at the church for an hour prior to the funeral.

GARY MICHAEL BERLING
Mr. Gary Michael Berling, 45, of Pensacola, died unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 28, 2000. Mr. Berling was born on March 29, 1954, in Pensacola where he lived the majority of his life. He attended Pensacola Catholic High School. he was employed with Brock Builders as a planner and estimator. He attended St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bellview. He was a devoted and loving father, son and brother, and an avid hunter and fisherman who loved college football and car racing. Mr. Berling was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Irene Berling. Survivors include his father, Ralph L. Berling; his daughters, Shannon and Michele Berling; four brothers: Danny Berling, Terry and wife Betty, Randy and wife Dawn of Panama City, and John and wife Sophia. He is also survived by seven nieces and a nephew. He will be missed by his family and friends. His funeral mass was celebrated Monday at St. Anne's Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas O'Flaherty officiating. He was buried in Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

Mr. George L. Best, 72, of 1538A Doty Circle, Panama City, Fla., passed away at home on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000. Mr. Best has been a resident of Bay County since 1996, coming here from Colorado. He is retired from the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his wife, Corinne of Panama City, Fla.; his sons, Steve Best and wife Tonie of Salida, Colo., Michael Best and wife Susie of Littleton, Colo.; his daughters, Tracy Calloway and husband David of Oviedo, Fla., Cassandra Spiegleman and husband Ronald of Panama City, Fla.; nine grandchildren. Memorialization will be by cremation. A memorial service will be held in the mountains of Colorado at a later date.

VIRGINIA CHRISTY
Mrs. Virginia "Aunt Jinks" Christy, 70, of 104 Marin Drive, Panama City, Fla., went to be with her Lord and Master Monday morning, Jan. 31, 2000 at her daughter's home. Born in Jefferson County, Fla., she moved here in 1988 from Tallahassee, Fla. She retired from the State of Florida as a deputy executive director for Programs and Administrative Services after 30 years of service. Her responsibility was to work with the budget for all of the community colleges in the state of Florida. Mrs. Christy was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, the Sunshine Ladies Sunday School Class and was the teacher for several years before she became ill. She is preceded in death by her husband, William George Christy. Mrs. Christy is survived by one daughter, Vicky Christy Nichols and husband Ronnie of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Richard Williams of Wacissa, Fla.; four sisters: Stella Carter of Gainesville, Fla., Elverie Chapin and Semmle Boland, both of Tallahassee, Fla., Alliree Walker of Wacissa, Fla.; three grandchildren: Christy Michelle Carpenter and husband Randy, Stephen Wesley Nichols and Gregory Lynn Nichols, all of Panama City, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Elisabeth Carpenter and Audrey Janel Carpenter, both of Panama City, Fla.; three nephews and four nieces. Funeral service will be conducted today, Feb. 2, 2000 at 1 p.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Edwards, the Rev. Wes Weekley and the Rev. W.T. Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Christy's grandsons and family members will serve as her pallbearers: Dennis Lamar, Tom Gillman, Steve Nichols, Greg Nichols, Randy Carpenter and Harry "Chip" Chapin. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Sunshine Lady's Sunday School Class. The family will be staying at the home of Vicky and Ronnie Nichols, 2422 Thames Drive, Hiland Park.

Mrs. Oceal Creamer, age 75, of 1214 Clay Avenue, Panama City, Fla., died on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000 at a local hospital. Mrs. Creamer had been a resident of Bay County since 1948 moving here from Pensacola. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. Mr. Robert Eugene Eaton, 51, of 4502 Carla Lane, Panama City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at a local hospital. He had been a resident of the area for 24 years, coming here from West Virginia. Mr. Eaton served his country in the U.S. military during the Vietnam Era and was a member of Victory Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Glenda G. Eaton of Panama City; two sons, Jamie Eaton of Panama City, and Dana Jenkins of Greenhead; and two grandchildren, Corey Jenkins and Brittany Jenkins, both of Panama City. William A. Hammack, 55, Vernon, Fla., went on yet another journey on Jan. 31, 2000. He is survived by his parents, William and Oma Hammack, his sister, Olivia and her husband, Jon Haines, who was Bill's best friend, nieces Marcie and Deanna, Aunt Annie Mae Porter, and special friends, Dr. Jim Hord, Lori Finley and Cindy Cottrell. Bill graduated from high school and went on to earn his masters' degree. Bill worked in the mental health field in Bay County for many years. Then his passion turned to computers and many of us have computers up and running because of Bill's help. He loved his family, friends, and dogs, and was absolutely passionate about all of his causes, real or imagined. The last few years of his life was spent enjoying his walks in the woods, his Christmas decorations and waiting for the azaleas to bloom and sharing all of these times with his mama and daddy. He was tough, stubborn, obstinate, opinionated, but he was especially an old softie. He was a genuine redneck and like Bill always said "there's nothing more dangerous than an educated redneck." We hope that where he is now has airplanes and tractors; a post office to argue with; and politicians to toy with! Services will be held today, Feb. 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Peel's Funeral Home, 301 E. The Rev. Joseph E. Rollins, 76, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Niceville, Fla. The Rev. Rollins was born March 26, 1923, in Glenallen, Ala., to Gordon G. and Minnie Hiten Rollins. He was a lifelong resident of Freeport, Fla. He was Baptist by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Freeport. The Rev. Rollins was an ordained minister since 1969. He pastored at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Lake Stanley Baptist Church, Argyle Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church during his ministry of some 30 years. He was also a veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Eglin AFB after 32 years of civil service. Friends will remember the Rev. Rollins for his diligent efforts and kind spirit, especially to those in need. He is predeceased by one brother, Charles H. Rollins. The Rev. Rollins is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean L. Rollins of Freeport, Fla.; three sons: Michael Elsworth Rollins and wife Kay of Panama City, Fla., Jim Rollins and wife Debra of Greenville, S.C., and Joe Rollins Jr. and wife Lisa of Valparaiso, Fla.; one sister, Virginia Campbell of Haleyville, Ala.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
