Mrs. Velma Newsome, 85, of Clarksville, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Newsome was born in Alabama and had lived in Calhoun County for most of her life. She worked with the Calhoun County school system at the Carr School lunchroom until her retirement. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Blountstown, Fla. She is survived by three sons: Charles and Clifford Newsome, both of Clarksville, and Herman Newsome of Wewahitchka; five daughters: Edna Pearl Burkett of Howard Creek, Fla., Lois Dunn of Alger, Mich., Lela Hutchinson of Columbus, Ga., Linda Hand of Jakin, Ga., and Doris Burkett of Blountstown; two sisters, Ades White and Jessie Lee Hinson, both of Graceville; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a very special nurse, Crystal. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. CST at Travelers Rest Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. James Pelt and the Rev. David Womack officiating. Interment will follow in Travelers Rest Cemetery
in Clarksville. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today, Jan. 10, at Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown.

JACKIE J. TAYLOR
Mr. Jackie J. Taylor, 64, of Panama City, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at his home. Born in Nashville, Ga., he moved here in 1939 from Georgia. He retired after 33 years of service with Stone Container as a crew leader. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, loved fishing and was a very dedicated Florida Gator fan. Mr. Taylor is preceded in death by his wife, Margarete Taylor. He is survived by one daughter, Ursula Pybus and husband James of Panama City; one brother, John C. Taylor of Circleville, Ohio; two sisters, Fannie Bell Fretwell and husband Eddie of Palatka, Fla., and Mary Lois Maultsby and husband Tommy of Panama City; one very close nephew Charles "Bubba" Taylor; two special nieces, Billy Joyce Johnson and Karen Corley; many other nieces and nephews; two grandchildren, Tammy Casey and husband Scott and Cindy Griffin and husband Matthew, all of Panama City; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted on today, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Michael McCann officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bay Medical Hospice or the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Taylor.

Mrs. Florence Dodd Green, 79, of 204 S. Kimbrel Ave., Panama City, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at a local hospital. Ms. Jo Anne Helen Anderson, age 67, of 600 Bob Little Road, Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at her home. She has been a resident of the area since 1960, coming here from Ohio and was Catholic by faith. Ms. Anderson is survived by her sons, Michael Mansini of Fountain, Fla., Leslie H. Anderson and his wife Lynn of Bayou George, Fla., and Joseph M. Anderson and his wife Shannon of Rapid City, S.D.; a brother, Carl Prantl of Hampton, Va.; and three grandchildren. Mr. Alfred David "A.D." Beck, age 74, of 3531 Florida Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at his home. He had been a resident of the area since 1948, coming here from Pensacola, Fla. Mr. Beck served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 32 years of service. Mr. Beck was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was also a member of the ACME Lodge No. 222, past Master and past District Deputy Grand Master, member of the Scottish Rites, 33rd Degree Mason, member of the Shaddai Shrine Temple, and Vice-President of the Westside Men's Club. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Brannon Beck of Panama City, Fla.; one son, Al Beck and his wife Karen of Panama City, Fla.; one daughter, Pam Domico and her husband Greg of Panama City, Fla.; sisters: Jessie Jackson and her husband Edward, Myrtle Lucas, Mary Rosa Johnson, and Doris Mayo, all of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Hilbert Beck and his wife Mildred of Montgomery, Ala.; a dear brother and sister-in-law, Hillman Brannon and his wife Allie Mae; a dear sister-in- law, Mildred Brannon; grandchildren: Michelle Smith and her husband Jerry, Jason Domico, Ashley Beck, and Abbie Beck; and great-grandchildren: Jordan and Gunner Smith. Mr. E. L. Coxwell, age 86, of Blountstown died Sunday in Calhoun Liberty Hospital in Blountstown. Mr. Coxwell was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County and was a carpenter and a member of Abe Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lovie Lee Coxwell of Blountstown; one son, Ronnie Coxwell of Blountstown; one daughter, Virginia Lowery of Lincoln, Ala.; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Walter Nichols, age 90, of Clarksville, died Sunday in Calhoun Liberty Hospital. Mr. Nichols was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County and was retired from Calhoun County School System as a maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Polar Head Baptist Church in Clarksville. He was pre-deceased in death by his wife, Chrystelle Nichols and his son and daugther-in-law, Henry James and Linda Nichols. Survivors include one son, Ellis Nichols and his wife Betty of Clarksville; two daughters, Jeanette Johnson and her husband Howard of Blountstown, Joyce Mauldin and her husband C.W. of Panama City; one brother, Louie Nichols of Panama City; four sisters: Minnie Mae Thorpe of Milton, Rosa Belle Thorpe of Panama City, Mildred Etheridge of Panama City, Christelle Walden of Frink; one sister-in-law, Doris Nichols of Blountstown; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. JAMES NORMAN POCOCK
James Norman Pocock, 70, of Panama City Beach and Chatham, Ontario, Canada, was taken by the Lord on Dec. 27, 1999, after a long battle with leukemia. Brother Pocock was a past master of Pythagoras Lodge No. 358 Free and Accepted Masons, a member of Scottish Rite Masons of Panama City, and a noble of the Mystic Shrine of Shaddai Temple of Panama City. He served with the Canadian Army's 21st Field Regiment (Wingham, Ont.). 11th Armored Regiment (Oshawa, Ont.). 33rd Medical Regiment (Coleburg, Ont.) and retired from the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment where he was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28, Chatham, Ontario, Canada. He is survived by his beloved wife and companion Mary West Pocock, eight children, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. At his request, there will be no services. He and his family request donation made in his honor to the Leukemia Foundation.

Mrs. Bobbe Tharpe Rowell, 66, died Dec. 18, 1999. Funeral services were held Dec. 21 in Lexington, S.C. She graduated from Bay County High School in 1951. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, William O. "Bill" Rowell of Lexington, loving family and friends.
