Mrs. Norma Wentworth Mathis, 77, died Friday Oct. 29, 1999 at Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. She was born in Shady Grove, Fla., and was a former resident of Panama City and Los Alamos, N.M. She had lived in Pinetta, Fla., since 1976. Mathis was a homemaker and a school volunteer. She attended Florida State College for Women and was a member of Pinetta United Methodist Church, Pinetta, Fla. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Cowles of Tolland, Conn., and Rhonda Royston of Gainesville, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday Nov. 1, 1999 at 1 p.m. in the Pinetta United Methodist Church, Pinetta, Fla. Burial will be at Hendry Cemetery, Sandy Grove, Fla.

Mrs. Dorothy Russell, 72, of 2938 Jenks Ave., Panama City, died on Oct. 25, 1999 in a Dallas, TX hospital. She had been a resident of Panama City since 1975 after moving here from New York. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary at Panama Country Club in Lynn Haven and was an active golfer up to three years ago. She was a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire. She is survived by her husband, Dr. James Russell; her daughter, Dr. Linda Margraf and husband Dr. David Margraf of Dallas; her son, J. Michael Russell and wife Shu-Chi Chan of Boston, Mass.; and her grandchild, Rebecca Margraf. Following cremation in Dallas, there will be a memorial service on Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Russell Bruner, 76, of Love Wood Road, Cottondale, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 1, from the Byrd-Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Hussey officiating. Burial will follow in the Cottondale Baptist Church Cemetery
with Byrd-Williams Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Mr. Bruner was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Jackson County, Fla. He entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany, France and Belgium during World War II. After leaving the service, he was a farmer until his retirement. Mr. Bruner was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Lawhorn, who died in February 1999. Survivors include his wife, Lottie Bruner, Cottondale, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Gregory Clayton, Monticello, Fla.; three grandsons, Colby, Brennon and Casey Clayton, Monticello, Fla.; one brother, Leo (John) Bruner, Graceville, Fla.; two sisters, Addie Sue Johnson, Marianna, Fla., and Mary Senn, Gaston, S.C.; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Gladys Marie Alford Chapman, of 1616 Dewitt, Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999. She had been a resident of Bay County since 1936. Mrs. Chapman was a classroom teacher at Millville Elementary School and Cove Elementary School. She was appointed supervisor of elections in Bay County and served in this capacity for 36 years until her retirement in January 1997. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Panama City and the Joyful Servants Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joseph F. Chapman Jr. She is survived by one son, Joseph F. Chapman III and his wife, Jeannette, and by a daughter, Jean Gainer, and her husband, Jerry, all of Panama City. She also is survived by a sister, Leila Scott of Panama City; six grandchildren, Mary Marie Clemo and her husband, Scott, Joey Chapman and his wife, Pamm, Kristian Chapman and his wife, Stacie, David Chapman and his wife, Kelli, Lynn Johnson and Maggie Hamm, all of Panama City; by 10 great-grandchildren; and by special friends Owen Lawrence, Mae Allen, Cyndi Lewis, and Nell Gasaway. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Panama City with the Rev. Craig Conner and the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Lt. Col. William M. Cowan, Retired, U.S.A.F. of 638 Driftwood Dr., Lynn Haven, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at his home. He had been a resident of the area since 1972, coming here from Colorado Springs, Colo. He was Espicopalian by faith and served his country in the U.S.Air Force during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. Mr. Cowan was the past president of A.F.A., a Paul Harris Fellow in the Lynn Haven Rotary and past president, and former chief ground school instructor at Sowell Aviation. He is survived by his wife, John Ella Grigsby Cowan of Lynn Haven; his daughters: Patricia A. Yarbrough and Mary Hill van der Laan, both of Lynn Haven, two sisters: Mary Hill Warner and Hanah Weedon, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren: Kenney Wallace, William Yarbrough, Brian Yarbrough, Kris van der Laan, Rachael Yarbrough, and Lyndsey van der Laan; and two great-grandchildren. Ella Mae Peterson Glenn was summoned on Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 1999, to meet the all wise and all knowing God in a home-going ceremony to honor her for her life's works and for the labor for her Master. She was born on Nov. 9, 1948, in Lynn Haven, Fla., to Herbert and Marie Peterson. She was the eldest daughter of this family and proved to be the big sister who was loved and appreciated. Her early childhood was spent in Lynn Haven. She could often be found having lots of fun in the Lynn Haven Park where she was a terrific athlete. She was a star on the Lynn Haven Girls Softball Team and played all over Bay County and surrounding areas. She was a model student at Patterson Elementary and Rosenwald High School. She attended Gulf Coast Community College and was an avid debater and a very popular classmate both in high school and in college. Her gift of laughter will always be remembered in the hearts of the Lynn Haven kids. When she laughed, it was often the most recognized as "one of a kind." Her humor was always followed by sensitivity (making sure her kindness showed even in jest). Ella Mae was reared in the atmosphere of the church. Her Sundays were always spent in one of the churches in Lynn Haven: Campbell's Temple First Born Church, Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, or New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. When she would speak of her personal relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, she would do it with so much joy, one could easily recognize the peace within her voice. She was a faithful member of Miracle Deliverance for two years. Residing in California, New Jersey, Miami and Texas for several years, she experienced many of life's pleasures and interest. Her lifelong task was the rearing of her son and the absolute joyous height was the care and concern for her six grandchildren. She served her community as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Glencove Nursing Pavilion and the Lisenby Retirement Center. She was able to minister to both patient and employee in an awesome way as only she could. To know her was to love and appreciate her. She leaves to cherish her fondest memories: one son, Horace Mason of Panama City; father, Herbert (Carrie) Peterson of Lynn Haven, Fla.; mother, Marie O'Neal of Philadelphia, Penn.; one sister, Ruby Peterson; two brothers, Herbert Leroy (Debra) Peterson and Jimmy Lee Peterson, both of Panama City; six grandchildren, Deonte DeShawn Schwetzler, Shankalya Tajere, Martez Jamal, Ricardo De'Jon, Devarian Martez and Charryse Shonte' Masons, all of Panama City, Fla.; two aunts, Leona Peterson and Essie Peterson, both of Lynn Haven; uncle, Robert Hagens of Chicago, Ill.; nieces, Latissa Sykes of Miami, Fla., Tamara, Shawn and Jasmine Peterson; nephews, Arthur (Evelyn) Peterson of Asburn, Va., and Jimmy Lee Jr.; step-grandmother, Dorothy Harris, Kendal Pinkard and Racquel Johnson (children); special friends, Virgie Richardson, Gwen Chancellor and Scylnda Brown; a loving cousin, Sharon Wright, and many other cousins, family members and friends too numerous to mention. Mr. William Moody, 45, of 259 Tyndall Parkway, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was a native of Troy, Ala., but had been a longtime resident of Panama City. He is survived by his wife, Ella Moody of Panama City; two sons, William Moody Jr. and Joseph Moody, both of Panama City; parents, Frank and Gussie Black of Havana, Fla.; two brothers, Frank Black Jr. of Marianna, Fla., and Willie Black of Tallahassee, Fla. Margaret Crawford Blackman, 88, of Inlet Beach, Fla., formerly of Dothan, Ala., died Saturday morning Oct. 30, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Lucy Summers, 45 Holly Leaf Lane, Inlet Beach, Fla., after an extended illness. Mrs. Blackman was a native of Dothan, Ala., the daughter of the late Thomas Clarence Crawford and Ella Griffin Crawford. She lived most of her lifetime in Dothan before moving to Inlet Beach in 1991. She was a graduate of the Newton Baptist Collegiate Institute and Troy Normal College. Blackman was a lifetime member of the American Federation of the Blind and a former member of the Southeast Alabama Chapter of the Blind. She was a member of the Selma Baptist Church in Dothan. She formerly owned and operated Blackman's Service Station in Dothan. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Anthony Blackman. Survivors include two daughters: Lucy Summers andher husband, Curtis Summers of Inlet Beach, Jonella Lien and her husband, Paul Lien of Killeen, Texas ; a granddaughter, Kim Ashley of Austin, Texas and a grandson, Tony Summers of Panama City Beach; several nieces and nephews also survive.
