MARTINEZ, Andrew J.,age 84, of Tampa, passed away September 26, 2002. Born in Tampa, he was the eldest son of Tampa pioneers, Gregorio and Palmira Martinez. Andrew was a West Tampa native; a graduate of the University of Tampa; a founding member of the Mensa Society; a director of many fine theatrical productions; a generous supporter of the Spanish Lyric Theater; a charter member of the Tampa Arts Council; a founding member of the Tampa Historical Society; a member of the Centro Espanol de Tampa; and a premier floral designer. POWELL, Connie P., 83 of Tampa, an Angel took Connie by the hand as she entered Heaven's Gates on September 29, 2002. She fought her earthly battle with much strength and courage. Now Mrs. Powell is resting on Heaven's golden shores. Mrs. Powell was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and a great friend to all who knew her. Mrs. Powell is survived by her daughter, Linda Whitley; three sisters, Louise Rayfield, Johnnie Hunter, and Jeanette Wiedecker; three grandchildren, Jacqueline Moody, Ronald Whitley, and Randy Whitley; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Les Powell and her daughter, Jacqueline Powell Mrs. Powell served her Lord Jesus faithfully for many years. RAMSEY, Sarah Moore, 84, of Tampa, Fla., now rests in peace with the Lord, as of Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. Sarah, (or Sadie, as her father called her), daughter of Richard Lynn Moore and Annie Mae Wright Moore, was born in Mitchell, Ga. on Jan. 31, 1918 and moved to Tampa as a child. She attended Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Junior High, and Plant High School. On summer break from her studies at Florida State College for Women, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority, she had her first date with Maynard Ramsey, who was home for the summer from the University of Florida's College of Law. There ensued many commutes for both of them, between Tallahassee and Gainesville, until she graduated from FSCW and moved back to Tampa. In 1939, she and Maynard married. Maynard enjoyed Sarah's love, support and joie de vivre for 62 years, while she also carried out her role as homemaker for her family. She relished life, adored the Lord and her family, and gave each of her three children the loving environment and special attention in which each could thrive. Her engaging sense of humor was imprinted on each of them and was much appreciated by her many friends as well. She was a faithful memb er of Hyde Park United Methodist Church, with time out to be a charter member of Palma Ceia Methodist Church for several years. Sarah was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Junior League of Tampa and hosted a group of young women known as `The Tasters`, inviting them to `taste and see that the Lord is good.` She leaves behind her loving husband, Maynard, daughter Carol Ramsey Turpin and husband Fred of Tampa, son Dr. Maynard Ramsey III and wife Lynn of Tampa, son Richard W. Ramsey and wife M'Lisse of West Palm Beach, sister Marjorie Moore Chunn Cochran and a sister-in law Isabelle Ramsey Bregler, both of Tampa; grandchildren Lynn Turpin, Frederick Turpin, Jr. and wife Sarah, Rosemary Ramsey, Melinda Ramsey, Rebecca Ra msey, Leeann Ramsey, and step-grandson Saul Dolgin, two great-grandchildren, Ellen and John Ramsey Turpin, and many beloved nieces and nephews. SIERRA, Abelardo `Abbey`, age 58, of Tampa, passed away September 23, 2002. He is survived by Sandra Sierra, his devoted wife of 36 years; son, Kevin Sierra, his wife, Lydia and their children, Olivia and Kevin; and daughter, Kristin Manck, her husband, Sean and their son, Cameron. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Sylvia Sierra, Gloria Decker and husband, Emerson and Marion Garcia; aunt Ofelia Alvarez; uncle Oscar Sierra and wife, Dalia; aunt Adelina Menendez; many nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; and devoted family friend, Gloria Williams. He graduated from Jesuit High School and the University of South Florida. He served in the United States Marine Corps. Abbey Sierra was a prominent businessman in Tampa. He served as General manager of the Tampa Bay Bandits. F or the last 20 years, Mr. Sierra and his wife have owned and operated the Cruise Shoppe in Tampa. A parishioner of St. Lawrence Catholic Church for 32 years, he was instrumental in the building of the present church. He served on the St. Lawrence School Board for 10 years and was president of the Tampa Catholic School Board for seven years. In gratitude to the Salesian Nuns who taught him in eleme ntary school, he successfully initiated the campaign to build the first retirement home for the Order. Hundreds of nuns have benefited from his endeavors. Honoring his Spanish heritage, he was a member of the Krewe of Sant'Yago and presently served on the Board for the Spanish Lyric Theatre. As a husband, father and abuelo, he will always be cherished for unyielding love and devotion. As a friend he enriched all the lives he touched and will be remembered for his loyalty, compassion and joy of life. A Funeral Mass will be offered for the repose of his soul, Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins, P.A., Pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. BAKER, George B., 73, of Vero Beach, formerly of Zephyrhills, died on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002 in Vero Beach following a long courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was born on Nov. 17, 1928 in Greenwich, N.Y., and was the son of the late, George and Mary (Searles) Baker. Mr. Baker was known to place his family and friends first above his illness. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Baker received many awards from the Woodlands Middle School in Zephyrhills, for his volunteer work as a mentor for disabled children. Survivors include four sons, George R. Baker and his wife, Karen of Sumter, S.C., Bruce K. Baker and his wife, Joan of South Glens Falls, N.Y.,James B. Baker of Vero Beach, and Steven D. Baker of Peru, Neb.
