Madeline B. Holloway
Madeline Barnett Holloway, 83, formerly of Atlanta, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Birmingham, Ala.
Born in Chatsworth, Ga., Mrs. Holloway was raised in Fort Meade.
Following her high school graduation, she moved to Atlanta and attended college at what is now Georgia State University. From 1941 until 1956, she was an executive secretary for the vice-president of Atlantic Steel Company. Following her business career, she became a volunteer docent at Atlanta History Center where she had an avid interest in Atlanta and Georgia history.
Mrs. Holloway was a charter member of the Sharondale Garden Club, and was a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Byers Holloway, Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Sarah Holloway Moore of Birmingham; one son, David Byers Holloway, Jr., of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Madeline Celeste Moore and Caroline Jane Moore of Birmingham; one sister, Marge Pennington of Atlanta; four brothers, Sam Barnett of Atlanta, and Ragon Barnett, Dave Barnett, and John Barnett, all of Fort Meade; one aunt, Edith Bullard of Atlanta; and various cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Patterson's Arlington Chapel, with Dr. Albert E. Clarke officiating.
Interment: Arlington Memorial Park.
James David "Buddy" Goff
James David "Buddy" Goff, 69, of Bartow, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1934, in Murdock, Fla., Mr. Goff moved to Bartow from Punta Gorda 60 years ago.
He was a superintendent for Laguna Construction, and also worked in the phosphate industry in Polk County for many years. He was a member of Lake Garfield Baptist Church, and of the American Legion Post #3. He also was a longtime supporter of Bartow High School athletics.
Mr. Goff was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by: his wife, Ruby Goff; two sons, James Goff of Bartow and Jeffrey Goff of Summerville, S.C.; two daughters, JaNeanne Goff Rhynehart of Bartow and Jennifer Ison of Auburndale; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Thursday, Jan. 29, at 1:30 p.m., at Florida National Cemetery, 602 S.W. 102nd Ave., Bushnell.

Nelson Johnson, Sr.
Nelson Johnson, Sr., 73, of Bartow, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1930, Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Bartow.
He was a dryer operator for U.S. Steel, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Providence Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Bartow.
Survivors include: his wife, Jimmie Jean Johnson; six sons, Barney Johnson, Neal Johnson, Michael Johnson, Sr., and Dwayne Johnson, all of Bartow, Robin Potts of Mulberry, and Nelson Johnson, Jr., of Winter Haven; four daughters, Loretta Charlton and Beth Johnson, both of Bartow, Dorothy Jones of Lakeland, and Tracy Johnson of St. Petersburg; 34 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 2, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Gause Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Saturday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m., at First Providence Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1030 West King Street.
Interment: Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.
Mildred L. McGill
Mildred L. McGill, 63, of Bartow, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Palm Gardens Health Care Center in Winter Haven.
Born in Lake Wales, Mrs. McGill moved to Bartow 46 years ago.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Bartow since 1957, and a former member of Choir #1.
Mrs. McGill and her husband were united in marriage on April 28, 1957.
She is survived by: her husband, Charles B. McGill, Sr.; two sons, Michael A. Howard and Charles B. McGill, Jr., both of Bartow; one daughter, Alethea J. McGill-Massey of Lakeland; one step-daughter, Tonya Irving of Bartow; one sister, Eula Mae Thomas of Lake Wales; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., at First Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 1030 King Street.
The funeral: Saturday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m., at the church, with Pastor Deryl A. Jones officiating.
Interment: Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.

May Dell Zirkles
May Dell Zirkles, 72, of Bartow, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at her residence.
Born Oct. 25, 1931, in Bainbridge, Ga., Mrs. Zirkles moved to Bartow from Orlando 30 years ago.
She was a quality control inspector for Ametek in Bartow for 18 years. She was Protestant.
Mrs. Zirkles was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Zirkles. Survivors include: one son, Ray Darley of Bartow; one step-son, Lee Zirkles of Orlando; one step-daughter, Cathy Atcherson of Tennessee; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m., at the funeral home, with Rev. Allen Wood officiating.
Interment: Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.
Ben C. 'Cotton' Walker
Ben C. "Cotton" Walker, 77, of Bartow, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Bartow Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 22, 1926, in Roanoke, Ala., Mr. Walker was a lifelong resident of Bartow.
He was a steel worker with Crown Cork and Seal in Bartow for 20 years. He was Baptist.
Mr. Walker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an accomplished archer, placing third in the World Archery Championship in Sweden in 1965. He also was an avid Polk County Historian, having one of the largest collections of local Indian artifacts and old bottle and coin collections in the area. He was a volunteer and member of the Polk County Historical Museum for many years, a member of the Masonic Tuscan Lodge #6 in Bartow, and was a certified watchmaker.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by: his parents, William and Clara Walker, one daughter, Marsha Walker; and two brothers, Clyde and Chink Walker. He is survived by: three daughters, Margie Foreman and Donnice Walker, both of Bartow, and Janice (Walker) Maroncelli of Winter Haven; one son, Clayton Walker of Bartow; one brother, Claude Walker of Bartow; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Thursday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Bartow, 410 E. Church St.
