Bessie Powell Smith
Bessie Powell Smith, 101, of Fort Meade, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Highlands Lake Center in Lakeland.
Born May 10, 1902, in Griffin, Ga., Mrs. Smith moved to Fort Meade from Wauchula some 33 years ago.
She was a homemaker. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Fort Meade, and was a member of the Eastern Star for 75 years.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, John Milton Powell. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Lella Mary and Ben Garrett of Fort Meade; one granddaughter, Diana Day of Polk City; one grandson, B. J. Garrett of Crystal River; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Jan. 15, from 10 to 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 307 E. Broadway.
The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with Rev. and Mrs. Lynn Crouch, and Rev. Kenny Slay officiating.
Interment: Bowling Green Cemetery.

George W. Horton
George W. Horton, 75, of Fort Meade, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at his residence.
Born Oct. 6, 1928, in Bradford County, Pa., Mr. Horton moved to Fort Meade from Troy, Pa., five years ago.
He was the owner/operator of George Horton Refrigeration. He was a former member of First Baptist Church of Troy, a member of First Church of God in Fort Meade, and a member of the Bowling Hall of Fame and the Volunteer Fire Department in Troy.
Mr. Horton is survived by: his wife, Shirley Horton; two daughters, Connie Dewey of Omaha, Neb., and Wanda Romberger of Gloucester, Va.; one son, Tom Horton of Centre Hall, Pa.; four step-daughters, Roz Warren of Slidell, La., Jennifer Pendergast of Long Beach, Cal., and Vicki Teribury and Kim Teribury, both of Gillett, Pa.; one step-son, Vincent Teribury of Gillett, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Joanna F. Coleman
Joanna F. Coleman, 73, of Bartow, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Bartow Memorial Hospital.
Born June 11, 1930, in Pierce, Ms. Coleman moved to Bartow in 1955.
She was a dietitian at Greentree Court. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Bartow.
Survivors include: one daughter, Lynn Goin of Virginia; two brothers, George Cayce of Lakeland and David Cayce of Winter Haven; and two granddaughters.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 2, from 2:30 to 3 p.m., at Asbury U.M.C., located at 1650 S. Jackson Ave.
The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. at the church.
Interment: Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow.

Louis Whitaker
Louis Whitaker, 72, of Bartow, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Bartow Memorial Hospital.
Born May 7, 1931, in Soperton, Ga., Mr. Whitaker moved to Bartow some 50 years ago.
He was an iron worker. He was Baptist.
Mr. Whitaker was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Whitaker. Survivors include: one daughter, Sandra Whitaker, and one grandson, Aaron Fawcett, both of Bartow.
Visitation: Sunday, Jan. 18, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Monday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., at Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow, with Rev. Matt Clark officiating.
Peggy Carnley
Peggy Carnley, 45, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Fort Meade, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003.
Born Dec. 9, 1958 in Bartow, Ms. Carnley lived most of her last 20 years in Ohio.
She worked as a cashier and day care worker. She was a Christian.
Ms. Carnley was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Carnley of Homes, Pa., on Nov. 4, 2003. She is survived by one daughter, Sarah McConnaughy, and one son, Joshua McConnaughy, both of Bellaire, Ohio; her mother, Joyce Dixon of Fort Meade; one sister, Deborah Walker of Bowling Green; and one brother, Johnnie Carnley of Fort Meade.
A memorial service will be held at Old Elim Cemetery in Fort Meade on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m.
Mary Ellen Baldwin
Mary Ellen Baldwin, 60, of Babson Park, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at The Groves Center.
Ms. Baldwin was born in Babson Park on Aug. 7, 1943.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Second Macedonia Baptist Church in Babson Park.
Ms. Baldwin is survived by: two sons, Dennis Baldwin and Lester Donaldson, Jr., both of Babson Park; two daughters, Evelyn Ashwood of Babson Park and Michelle Smith of Lake Wales; two sisters, Marion Anderson of Babson Park and Vireatha Atmore of Lake Wales; seven brothers, Pokey Atmore, Jr., and Otis Atmore, both of Lake Wales, Charles Atmore of Hartford, Conn., Rufus Atmore of Frostproof, and James Atmore, Jackie Atmore, and Henry Atmore, all of Babson Park; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 23, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Gause Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2:30 p.m., at First Institutional Baptist Church in Lake Wales.
Interment: Lake Wales Cemetery.
Willie Bee Farrer
Willie Bee Farrer, 84, of Eagle Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at her residence.
Born April 16, 1919, in Coffee County, Ala., Mrs. Farrer was a lifelong resident of Polk County, and a longtime Bartow resident.
She was a homemaker. She attended First Assembly of God.
Mrs. Farrer was preceded in death by her husband, Ebling W. Farrer. She is survived by: two sons, Kenneth Leon Farrer and Gene Farrer, both of Bartow; one daughter, Karey Phipps of Bartow; one brother, Edward Powell of Cocoa Beach; three grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Monday, Jan. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
The funeral: Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home, with Rev. Billy F. Green officiating.
