DELAND -- Lucille Clara Sponberg, 95, of East Howry Avenue, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital DeLand.
Mrs. Sponberg moved here from St. Petersburg in 1995. A homemaker, she also worked as an assistant restaurant manager. Mrs. Sponberg attended Stetson Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Vivian Jenkins, DeLand, and Ruby Bergman, Burlington, Vt. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.
Margaret Stallman
AUG. 24, 1910 -- JAN. 16, 2005
ORMOND BEACH -- Margaret Stallman, 94, of Overbrook Court, a resident since 1983, died Sunday at Glenmont Christian Science Facility, Hilliard, Ohio.
Mrs. Stallman, a homemaker, moved to this area from her native Columbus, Ohio. She was a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. She was an avid church organist.

Edith Swindell
MARCH 30, 1919 - JAN. 18, 2005
ORMOND BEACH -- Edith Odom Swindell, 85, of John Anderson Drive, an office manager with the National Council on Aging in California before her retirement, died Tuesday at Indigo Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Daytona Beach.
Mrs. Swindell was born in Jasper, Ala., and moved here from Miami in 2000.
Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Fran and Joe Morina, Ormond Beach, both of whom provided for her care. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.
Donald Talbert
JULY 2, 1930 -- JAN. 19, 2005
DELAND -- Donald N. Talbert, 74, of Lakeside Drive, a machinist for the National Aerospace Program, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City.
Born in Cockeysville, Md., Mr. Talbert, an Army veteran of the Korean War, moved here in 1987 from New Jersey. He also was a stock person for Big Lots, Orange City.
Survivors include his wife of five years, Linda; a son, Jackie Talbert, Pompton Lakes, N.J.; a daughter, Donna Justice, Port St. John; two brothers, Edward and Emory, both of Maryland; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Marion Speight
62-year language teacher dies
DAYTONA BEACH -- "Ma Speight" taught thousands of Bethune-Cookman College students Spanish, French, Italian and German during her 62-year career at the school.
She kept many of their photos -- and their children's photos -- at her home.
Marion Speight, a former associate professor of modern language in the School of Humanities and Fine Arts whose tenure at Bethune-Cookman was the longest in the school's history, died Friday at Halifax Memorial Hospital. She was 87.
Hiram Powell, chairman of the music department, taught for many years alongside Speight, and took a French class from her in 1973.
He described a teacher who carried forth the no-nonsense spirit of academic excellence brought by the college founder, Mary McLeod Bethune, who brought Speight to Daytona Beach in 1942.
Speight would point out strengths and weaknesses, often with a wag of her index finger, he said -- but she always ended her critiques by insisting the student give her a hug.
"I guess the word would be 'relentless, ' " he said. "No compromise of any kind."
One day Powell was scheduled to translate a journal in his French class, but his partner was absent. He was confident she would let the recitation slide; instead, she made him perform both parts.
"She made me do 20 back-and-forths (a conversation with himself), " he said. "She said, 'Next time, you'll make sure your partner is here.' She sort of believed in that taking care of each other."
Provost Ann Taylor-Green said she joined the faculty in 1968 and came to know Speight as a friend, whose legendary influence on students made her a college icon.
"She stayed clear and lucid up until the end, " Taylor-Green said. "I admired the fact that she was as clear as she was when she called me last semester."
Speight retired from B-CC last summer. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, never married. One son, Joseph A. Campbell of Daytona Beach, survives.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Lieselotte Benoit, 70, of Berkshire Road, a resident since 1975, died Thursday at The Terrace, Daytona Beach.
Mrs. Benoit, a homemaker, was a native of Erfurt, Germany, and moved here from Columbia, S.C. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking and shopping.
Survivors include a son, Michael, Holly Hill, and Adrian, Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Margaret Gibbs, Daytona Beach; and three grandchildren. Pinello is in charge.
Marshall Bryarly

ORMOND BEACH -- Marshall E. Bryarly, 81, a recreational therapist in Roanoke, Va., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.
Mr. Bryarly, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, was born in Washington, D.C., and came to this area in 1987 from Roanoke.
Survivors include a son, Marshall Jr., three daughters, Penny Bryarly, Faye Hedrick and Laura Thomas, and a sister, Patricia Baird, all of Virginia; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild. Lohman-Ormond is in charge.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mary V. "May" Dedrick, 85, of Ribault Avenue, a native of North Bergen, N.J., died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center.
Mrs. Dedrick, a homemaker, moved to this area in 2001 from Titusville. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She enjoyed dancing and crocheting.

ORMOND BEACH -- Armand A. DiLoreto, 92, of North Ridgewood Avenue, who retired as a shipping agent with Fafnir Bearing a division of Textron, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.
Mr. DeLoreto moved to this area in 1975 from his birthplace, New Britain, Conn. He enjoyed working around his house.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Samuel Malcolm Dinger, 53, of International Speedway Boulevard, a former chef and owner of Cafe at Wexford in Hilton Head, S.C., died Jan. 12 at home.
Mr. Dinger, an Army veteran, was born in Oil City, Pa., and came here in 2004 from Hilton Head. He was a graduate of Johnson and Wales Culinary Arts Institute, Charleston, S.C. He enjoyed building and fixing anything, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a daughter, Helena Dinger, Naples; and two sisters, Carolyn Alvey, Fort Myers, and Bonnie Nestle, Atlanta. DEBARY -- Grant K. Douglas, 87, of Sanford Avenue, who retired as manager of Sohigro Fertilizer Plant in Wapakoneta, Ohio, died Friday at home.
Mr. Douglas was born in Hartford City, Ind., and moved here in 1978 from Wapakoneta. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Fort Recovery, Ohio, Scottish Rite, Dayton, Ohio and the DeLand Shrine Club.
