DAYTONA BEACH SHORES -- Virginia Ponder, 80, of South Atlantic Avenue, who was born in Washington D.C., died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.
Mrs. Ponder, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1982 from Atlanta. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Daytona Beach, and its Altar Guild. She enjoyed playing bridge and shuffleboard.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Beverly; two sons, Dawson, Lau Rel, Md., and Thomas, Mission Viejo, Calif.; two daughters, Barbara Kinsey, Pearland, Texas, and Diane Stallard, Barrington, Ill., a sister, Jeanette Greeip, Annapolis, Md.; 10 grandchildren. Mildred Robertson

ORANGE CITY -- Mildred B. Robertson, 91, of North Leavitt Avenue, a former registered nurse, died Sunday at Majestic Oaks, John Knox Village.
Mrs. Robertson, was born in Whitehurst, Vt., and moved to this area in 1983 from Cassadaga. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Orange City.
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, James; a brother, Bernard Bell, Orange City; a sister Jan Quillin, Hartford, Conn.; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, Orange City, is in charge.
Janelle Savage
AUG. 12, 1946 -- OCT. 24, 2004
DAYTONA BEACH -- Janelle Sue Savage, 58, of South Beach Street, a former secretary for The Community Chest, died Sunday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.
Ms. Savage moved to this area in 1985 from her native Cincinnati. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include her mother, Mariam Savage, Daytona Beach. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.
Viola Seagle

PORT ORANGE -- Viola E. Seagle, 88, of Wall Street, a retired bookkeeper for National Grain Yeast Corp., New York City, died Saturday at Port Orange Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Seagle was born in New York City, and moved to area in 1979 from Long Island, N.Y. She was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church. Mrs. Seagle was an avid bridge player and a member of many bridge clubs.

Moses Stephens

DAYTONA BEACH -- Moses E. Stephens, 71, of South Beach Street, a former farm laborer, died Oct. 20 at Regency House Skilled Nursing Facility.
Mr. Stephens was born in Greenville, and moved to this area several years ago from Homestead.
Survivors include five brothers, Oscar and David Stephens, both of Daytona Beach; Lorenzo Solomon, Pensacola; Willie Solomon, Bartow, and Walter Solomon, Madison; and two sisters, Essie Shaw, Orlando, and Jessie Solomon, Quitman, Ga. Gainous, Daytona Beach, is in charge.
Jesse Vogenitz
AUG. 29, 1914 -- OCT. 24, 2004
PORT ORANGE -- Jesse P. Vogenitz, 90, of Greenfield Drive, who worked in the metal lathe department for Carpenters Union No. 53 in Philadelphia, before his retirement, died Sunday at home.
Mr. Vogenitz, a Navy veteran of World War II, where he was Golden Gloves champion in 1944, was born in New Haven, Conn. He moved to this area in 1978 from Folcroft, Pa. He was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, Daytona Beach. An avid boxing fan, he enjoyed teaching boxing.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Helen; three sons, Mark, Daytona Beach, Jesse, Zellwood, and Fred, Sebastian; three daughters, Margaret Burke and Jane Hummel, both of North Wales, Pa., and Sharon Miller, Lewes, Del.; a sister, Agnes Harrison, Port Ornage; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Harold Wires

FLAGLER BEACH -- Harold E. Wires, 71, of Connecticut Avenue, who retired from the Air Force, died Monday at home.
Mr. Wires, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, was born in Parkersburg, W.Va. He moved here in 1984 from Miami.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen; two sons, Michael, Virginia, and Robert, Michigan; three stepsons, Timothy, Donald and Kenneth Mason, all of Miami; two sisters, Carrie Wigal and Shirley McPherson, both of Ohio; and a grandchild. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.
Frederick Fennell, conductor, dies at 90
Frederick Fennell, a 1968 guest conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra during the Florida International Festival in Daytona Beach, died Tuesday at his home in Siesta Key. He was 90.
Born July 2, 1914, in Cleveland, Fennell attended the Eastman School of Music on the University of Rochester campus, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music.
In 1939, he became a member of the Eastman conducting faculty and in 1952 founded the Eastman Wind Ensemble. He also received an honorary doctorate from Eastman in 1988.
Fennell also served as principal guest conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony, principal conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra in Japan, and conductor of the Cleveland Symphonic Winds; Columbia University American Festival; National Music Camp; Yaddo Music Period; Eastman-Rochester Pops Orchestra; and Eastman Opera Theatre. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Miami School of Music.
Frederick Fennell Hall was dedicated in Kofu, Japan, with a concert by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra on July 17, 1992.
Fennell has written several publications on music.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, and a daughter, Cathy Fennell Martensen.
Robert Harman

ORMOND BEACH -- Robert D. Harman, 74, of Deer Lake Circle, a native of Baileysville, W.Va., died Tuesday at Bishop's Glen, Holly Hill.
Mr. Harman, an Air Force veteran, moved to this area in 1997 from Titusville. He retired in 1992 from the U.S. Postal Service in Titusville. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, it's Men's Bible Study and it's Breakfast club. Mr. Harman enjoyed gourmet cooking, golf, travel and photography.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Leona; and a daughter Sandra Harman, Orlando. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, 1035 W. Charles Maxwell

PALM COAST -- Charles "Bill" Maxwell, 89, of Cloverdale Court North, a native of San Jose, Calif., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Flagler.
Mr. Maxwell, a Navy veteran, moved to this area in 1995 from San Marcus, Calif. He retired as vice president of Ace Relocation in San Marcus, Calif. Mr. Maxwell was a member of the Rotary Club and the Lions Club in California. He enjoyed boating.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Leonora; a son Bill, Palm Coast; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.
Mary Moore

PALM COAST -- Mary Elizabeth Moore, 83, of Walla Place, a resident since 1999, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.
Mrs. Moore moved to this area from her birthplace, Middletown, N.Y. She was employed in the gemstone business and enjoyed crafts, knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include her nephew, Gary Bloom, Palm Coast, who provided for her care. New Life Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.
Mary Scharp

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mary Kincaid Scharp, 81, of Mason Avenue, a registered nurse who worked at South Miami Hospital, died Tuesday at Emory L. Bennett Veterans Nursing Home.
Ms. Scharp, a veteran Navy Nurse serving during World War II, was born in Fire Creek, W.Va., and moved here in 2003 from South Florida. An avid bridge player, Mrs. Scharp also enjoyed reading.

James Scherer

DELTONA -- James T. Scherer, 84, of West Dana Drive, who retired after 36 years with the Sheet Metal Local 71 in Buffalo, N.Y., died Nov. 16 at Buffalo Veterans Hospital, Buffalo.
Mr. Scherer, an Army veteran of World War II, moved to this area in 1982 from Buffalo, his birthplace. He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Community, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 8093, DeBary, the Eagles Club and the American Legion, Warsaw, N.Y. He enjoyed bowling and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Laura; two sons, James Jr., Buffalo; Wayne, Las Vegas; four daughters, Judy Sanchez, Sanford, Gloria Murphy, West Seneca, N.Y., Joyce Torge, Derby, N.Y., and Mary Scherer, Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Dillemuth, Angola, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.
