John Hansen

SEPT. 16, 1939 -- FEB. 24, 2005

DELAND -- John R. Hansen, 65, of West Ohio Avenue, a retired deputy sheriff for Beaufort County, S.C., died Thursday at Oak Tree Nursing Home, South Daytona.

Mr. Hansen, a Navy veteran, was born in Kansas City, Mo., and moved to this area in 1999 from Fruitland Park. He attended the University of Missouri. He enjoyed boating, the beach, yard work and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Linda; two sons, Tim Cronenbold, DeLand, and Larry Cronenbold, Salyersville, Ky.; a daughter, Michelle Hathaway, Gallatin, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Tri-County Cremation, Longwood, is in charge.

Julian Holbrook Jr.

JULY 29, 1926 -- FEB. 24, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Julian Harvey Holbrook Jr., 78, of Standish Drive, a retired educator, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Holbrook was born in High Point, N.C., and came to this area in 1960 from Monroe, N.C. He also retired as a part-time stockbroker. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Appalachian State Teachers College. Mr. Holbrook was a member of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, the Moose Lodge and the Quarterback Club. An avid Gator football fan, he also enjoyed college basketball.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Wanda; a brother, Randall Van, Ormond Beach; and a sister, Joyce McKillop, Concord, N.C. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or to Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32176. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Mary LaSalle

JUNE 28, 1919 -- FEB. 24, 2005

BEVERLY BEACH -- Mary T. LaSalle, 85, of Nautilus Drive, who retired in 1980 as a customer service representative for Grumman's Aerospace Corp., died Thursday at Florida Hospital-Flagler, Palm Coast.

Mrs. LaSalle, a native Brooklyn, N.Y., moved here in 1987 from Oakdale, N.Y. She was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, Flagler Beach, the Sunshine Club and Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS). Mrs. LaSalle enjoyed telling jokes, travel and music.

Survivors include two sons, Anthony LaSalle, Deer Park, N.Y., and Stanley Kupchin, Flushing, N.Y.; two daughters, Ann Oddo, Selden, N.Y., and Dorothy Veredrosa, Sun City, Ariz.; a brother, Peter Lombardi, Brooklyn; a sister, Margaret Grispino, Richmond Hill, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Charles McGuire

OCT. 28, 1905 -- FEB. 23, 2005

DELAND -- Charles W. McGuire, 99, of West Wisconsin Avenue, a retired master electrician for Westinghouse, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. McGuire was born in North Braddock, Pa., and came to this area in 1970 from Ocala. He was a member of Liberty Independent Baptist Church. He also owned his lawn service, worked at a bakery and was a wallpaperer. An avid gardener, he was known for the largest bougainvillea in the DeLand area. Mr. McGuire was an avid Richard Petty fan.

Survivors include six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Independent Baptist Church Building Fund, 1365 W. Plymouth Ave., DeLand, FL 32720; or to Meals on Wheels co Council on Aging, P.O. Box 671, Daytona Beach, FL 32115-0671. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Al Mikesic

MARCH 13, 1929 -- FEB. 25, 2005

EDGEWATER -- Al Mikesic, 75, of Pine Tree Drive, a retired real estate investor and landlord in the Chicago area, died Friday at home.

Mr. Mikesic was a veteran of the Croatian Army during World War II, and the Yugoslavian Army under Tito. He was born in Croatia and moved to this area in 1986 from Chicago. He was a member of the Croatian Club, Tampa. Mr. Mikesic attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marijana; a stepson, Jeff Kulenovic, Chicago; three brothers, Jura, St. John, Ind., Franz, Slovenia, and Zvonko, Germany; two sisters, Mara Doza and Milka Vake, both of Slovenia; and a granddaughter. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Arnold Neal

MARCH 3, 1933 -- FEB. 24, 2005

DELTONA -- Arnold W. Neal, 71, of Bailey Avenue, an electrical lineman for an electrical company, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Neal, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Frankford, W.Va., and moved here in 1996 from Virginia. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, DeBary.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Patricia; three sons, Robert and Christopher, both of Woodbridge, Va., and Arnold Jr., Dumfries, Va.; two daughters, Angela Easton, Dumfries, and Tina George, Woodbridge; five sisters, Rhonda Scott and Rita Hobbs, both of Richmond, Neta Shires, Clifton Forge, Va., Doris Robertson, Ronceverte, W.Va., and Maxie Holiday, Fairlea, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Andrew Parker

SEPT. 8, 1921 -- FEB. 24, 2005

DELTONA -- Andrew J. Parker, 83, of Sumatra Avenue, who retired in 1984 as a territory manager for Bigelow-Sanford in Boston, died Thursday at Kindred Hospital, Green Cove Springs.

Born in Boston, Mr. Parker, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, moved to this area in 1984 from Natick, Mass. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, DeBary, Glen Abbey Golf Club and the Deltona Organ and Music Club. He was a past president of the New England Carpet Club. Mr. Parker was a graduate of Burdett Business College, Boston.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie; a son, Richard, Rochester, N.Y.; two daughters, Joan Smehil, Silver Spring, Md., and Susan Kessler, Malabar; a brother, Joseph, Brockton, Mass.; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Joseph Pearson

NOV. 17, 1936 -- FEB. 25, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Joseph B. Pearson, 68, of North Ridgewood Avenue, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, died Friday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Pearson, a church social worker, moved here in 1991 from Fairmont, W.Va. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mr. Pearson enjoyed singing, chess and creative writing and reading including poetry.

Survivors include two sons, Mario, Port Orange, and Fabian, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Theresa Pearson, Port Orange, and Anastasia Bowman, Philippi, W.Va.; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 201 University Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32118. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Willie Pritchett

JAN. 2, 1918 -- FEB. 25, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Willie Mae "Mutt" Pritchett, 87, of Madison Avenue, a former presser for Miami Dry Cleaners, died Friday at Halifax Medical Center.

Born in Albany, Ga., Mrs. Pritchett moved to this area in 1915 from Waycross, Ga. She was a member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the choir, Board of Ushers and former Sunday School teacher, the Elks Lodge and Colansie. She was a former member of Ruth Chapter No. 144 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include three grandchildren; and Clara Williams, Newport News, Va., who provided for her care. Gainous is in charge.

Brandon Southward

DEC. 3, 1976 -- FEB. 23, 2005

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Brandon Clay Southward, 28, of Atlantic Avenue, a former free agent of the Jacksonville Jaguars, died Wednesday at Bert Fish Medical Center after swimming in pool in New Smyrna Beach.

Mr. Southward moved to this area in 2003 from Colorado Springs, his birthplace. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado Springs. An adventurer, Mr. Southward enjoyed surfing, kayaking, diving, swimming, mountain climbing, football, baseball, weight lifting, music, nutrition and was an avid reader.

Survivors include his parents, Stanton and Beatrice, Colorado Springs; a brother, Stanton, Loveland, Colo.; a sister, Stacy Banks, Colorado Springs; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Southward, Upper Sandusky, Ohio; and his maternal grandmother, Clara Gamino, Chicago. NewLife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Lohoma Springer

AUG. 8, 1923 -- FEB. 23, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Lohoma L. Springer, 81, of South Nova Road, who retired after 40 years with the Timken Roller Baring Co., Canton, Ohio, died Wednesday at home.

Mrs. Springer moved to this area in 1982 from her native Dover, Ohio. She also worker for the Daytona International Speedway. She was a member of the Yellow Jackets Motorcycle Club, Dover, and the Port Orange Police Athletic League. Mrs. Springer was a volunteer for the Red Cross. She was an avid motorcycle rider.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Crace, and a daughter, Jessica Crace, both of Hilliard, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. National Cremation, Melbourne, is in charge.

Sylvester Terrell

NOV. 22, 1944 -- FEB. 22, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Sylvester Terrell, 60, of Jefferson Street, a former employee of Bethune-Cookman College, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Terrell, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, was born in Sanford, and moved to Daytona Beach several years ago from Fort Lauderdale. He was a graduate of Crooms Academy, Sanford, and Bethune-Cookman College.

Survivors include Daisy Hicks and Lillie Wiggins, both of Daytona Beach, both of whom provided for his care. Gainous, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Clara Tooke

OCT. 2, 1918 -- FEB. 24, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Clara Rhoda Tooke, 86, Freedom Lane, a former branch manager at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City, died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mrs. Tooke was a native of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and moved here in 1973 from New York City. She was a member of the Museum Guild and the Pelican Bay Women's Club.

Survivors include a son, Charles Noddin, Jackson Heights, N.Y.; a sister, Beulah Childs, Fredericton, New Brunswick; and a niece, Lois Muffett, who provided for her care. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Gift of Remembrance Headquarters, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road, Suite 415, Maitland, FL 32751-7105. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.
