Jeremy Hehn

JUNE 17, 1994 -- JULY 16, 2004

LAKE HELEN -- Jeremy Drake Hehn, 10, of South High Street, a Daytona Beach native, died Friday at home. An autopsy is pending.

Jeremy was a student at Volusia Pines Elementary. He was a member of the Sanctuary DeLand Church of God and the Boys and Girls Club. He enjoyed gymnastics, skateboarding and roller skating.

Survivors include his mother, Joanne Hehn, Lake Helen, his father, Jerry Mundell, Gulf Breeze; and a brother, Josh Groover, and two sisters, Julia Hehn, and his twin, Jasmine Hehn, all of Lake Helen. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

Doris Miller

OCT. 29, 1932 -- JULY 16, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Doris Miller, 71, of Pinedale Road, a resident since 1993, died Friday at home.

Ms. Miller was born in Fenton, Mich., and moved to this area from Linden, Mich.

Survivors include four sisters, June Bryant-Heiny and Sherrone Miller, both of Edgewater, Leona Senter, Linden, and Velma Baunsgard, Holly, Mich. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Ralph Pearsall

NOV. 16, 1906 -- JULY 18, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Ralph Howard Pearsall, 97, of Mobile Avenue, a custodian who retired from the Bellmore School Board in New York, died Sunday at Grand Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center, Palm Coast.

Mr. Pearsall, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Lynbrook, N.Y., and moved here in 2000 from Seaford, N.Y. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include three sons, Terry, Holly Hill, and Ralph II, Mesa, Ariz., and Dennis, Glenmoore, Pa.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Doris Pogany

DEC. 4, 1938 -- JULY 18, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Doris Ann Pogany, 65, of Judy Street, a secretary for New Smyrna Beach Middle School before her retirement, died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Pogany was born in Fayetteville, Pa., and moved here as a child from Chambersburg, Pa. She was a member of Christ Community Church and the Lighthouse Via de Cristos, and she helped coach Little League for eight years. An avid Miami Dolphins fan, she also enjoyed stock car racing, particularly Michael Waltrip, cooking, travel and cruises.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph; two sons, David and Kevin, a daughter, Dorlisa Pogany, and her mother, Carrie Powell, all of New Smyrna Beach; two brothers, Richard Powell, Manchester, N.H., and Ray Powell, Glendale, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

William Schap

JULY 15, 1918 -- JULY 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- William J. "Bill" Schap, 85, of Fairview Avenue, a resident since 1982, died Sunday at Horizon Healthcare.

Mr. Schap, a retired salesman, was born in Fargo, S.D., and came to this area from Aberdeen, S.D. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed photography, baseball, music and coin collecting.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice; a son, Bill Jr., Ormond Beach; two daughters, Diane Welch, Ormond Beach, and Mary Jo Desautels, Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Gurneith Johnson, Pelican Rapids, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Pinello is in charge.

Alline Shortes

OCT. 8, 1923 -- JULY 18, 2004

DELAND -- Alline McCauley Shortes, 80, of University Circle, who retired from BellSouth as a group chief operator, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Born in San Augustine, Texas, Mrs. Shortes moved here in 1997 from Homestead. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. An avid reader, Mrs. Shortes also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Brawner, DeLand, and Dinaline MacIntyre, North Miami; two brothers, Charles McCauley Jr., Fort Hancock, Texas, and Robert McCauley, New Mexico; a sister, Polly Smith, Muskogee, Okla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Joseph Stephens Jr.

JUNE 24, 1918 -- JULY 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Joseph H. Stephens Jr., 86, of Weaver Street, who worked for Eastern Airlines before his retirement, died Sunday at Halifax Convalescent Center.

Mr. Stephens was born in Griffin, Ga., and moved here as a child. He graduated from the former Campbell Street High School in 1936.

Survivors include a son, Joseph, Detroit; two daughters, Norma "Pokey" Lewis, Daytona Beach, and Bonita James, Miami; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Thompson is in charge.

Jean Sullivan

JUNE 9, 1926 -- JULY 16, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Jean A. Sullivan, 78, of American Way, a native of Wheaton, Md., died Friday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Ms. Sullivan, a homemaker, moved here in 1983 from Rockville, Md. She enjoyed arts and crafts.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, William; three sons, Sandy William, Gaithersburg, Md., Brian, Monrovia, Md., and Dean, Mount Airy, Md.; a brother, William Stubbs, Martinsburg, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Volusia Memorial, Port Orange, is in charge.

Darold Van Orden

APRIL 5, 1958 - JULY 17, 2004

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Darold Simpson Van Orden, 46, of Valencia Road, a construction laborer , died Saturday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

A native of Ridgewood, N.J., Mr. Van Orden moved here in 1998 from Burnsville, N.C. He enjoyed glass engraving, drawing, artwork, entertaining and helping people.

Survivors include his wife Cheryal; a brother, David, Southington, Conn.; and a sister, Debbie Palko, Stockholm, N.J. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Everett Alexander
JULY 28, 1922 -- AUG. 4, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Everett Lee Alexander, 82, of Topside Circle, a retired wholesale meat supervisor in Miami who worked with Empire Foods, Dirrs Gold Seal Meats and Savory Foods, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Alexander, an Army veteran of World War II who served in the Pacific Theater, was born in Davidson, Tenn., and moved here in 1992. He was a member of New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 F&AM, American Legion Post 285, Scottish Rite Consistory of Miami and a past master of North Shore Lodge 277 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy "Jean"; a son, Lee, Lincoln, N.J.; a daughter, Jeannie Chesser, Honolulu; a sister, Marguerite Burke, Geneva; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Baldwin Brothers, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Anita Bressi

FEB. 25, 1950 -- AUG. 4, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Anita Marie Bressi, 54, of Azalea Drive, the former 10-year owneroperator of European Message, died Wednesday at home.

Ms. Bressi moved to this area in 1980 from her native Canton, Ohio. She enjoyed stargazing and feeding birds and squirrels.

Survivors include her fiance of seven years, William Thanasiu, Ormond Beach. Newlife Cremation is in charge.

Bobby Bon Fleur

AUG. 12, 1944 -- AUG. 5, 2004

PANAMA CITY BEACH -- Bobby Bon Fleur, 59, of Panama City Beach, a Daytona Beach native, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Bon Fleur, a Coast Guard veteran of the Vietnam War, attended the University of Kansas and was a 1963 graduate of Mainland High School, where he played on the football and baseball teams. A Panama City Beach resident since 1971, he formerly worked as a mutuel manager at the Ebro Greyhound Park. Mr. Bon Fleur enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Beverly; two daughters, Andreia Posey and Amy Gorman, both of Panama City Beach; his father, William "Bill, " Daytona Beach; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Covenant Hospice, 107 W. 19th St., Panama City, FL 32405. Wilson Funeral Home, Panama City, is in charge.

Verna Byrd

NOV. 12, 1908 -- AUG. 6, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Verna S. Byrd, 95, Edward Street, a resident since 1960, died Friday at a local care facility.

Mrs. Byrd, a homemaker, was born in Wilkes County, N.C., and moved to this area from Detroit. She was a member of Servants Quarters Fellowship. An avid gardener, who raised and canned her own vegetables, she also enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include a son, Charles, New Smyrna Beach; two daughters, Frances Ford, New Smyrna Beach, and Betty Boehmer, New Mexico; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Servants Quarters Fellowship, 1429 Sabal Palm Drive., Edgewater, FL 32132. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.
