Allen Kojola

JULY 30, 1922 -- APRIL 12, 2005

EDGEWATER -- Allen C. Kojola, 82, La Coquina, a salesman for Audubon Motors, Pontiac, Mich., before his retirement, died Tuesday at home.

Born in Paavola, Mich., Mr. Kojola, an Army veteran of World War II, came to this area in 1988 from West Bloomfield, Mich.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynne Sanderbeck, Edgewater, and Janet Kojola, Grosse Ile, Mich.; and a sister, Dorothy Carlson, Newport, Tenn. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.

Margaret Meronek

MAY 24, 1921 -- APRIL 14, 2005

DELAND -- Margaret M. Meronek, 83, of North Amelia Avenue, who retired as a clerk and typist for IBM Computers, died Thursday at home.

Mrs. Meronek was born in Glen Karn, Ohio, and moved here in 1993 from Chicago. She was a graduate of Ball State University.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Jerry; a son, Gregory, Lafayette, Calif.; a daughter, Diane Anshell, San Diego; two sisters, Mary Lou De Tomaso, East Meadows, N.Y., and Doris Waters, Kissimmee; and a grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 564, DeLand, FL 32721. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Dorothy Mullen

APRIL 28, 1927 -- APRIL 14, 2005

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dorothy Z. Mullen, 77, of Wayne Avenue, who moved here in 2000 from Dover, Tenn., died Thursday at Bert Fish Medical Center.

Mrs. Mullen, a homemaker, was born in Selmer, Tenn. She was a member of Dover Untied Methodist Church and participated in many charity events. Mrs. Mullen enjoyed square dancing, crafting and dance roller-skating.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Howard; two sons, Howard Jr., Titusville, and Wayne, Winter Springs; a daughter, Patricia Mozer, Falls Church, Va.; a brother, Homer Dudley, Arlington, Texas; a sister, Loretta Saylors; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Settle-Wilder is in charge.

William Roberts

OCT. 7, 1948 -- APRIL 13, 2005

DELAND -- William Douglas Roberts, 56, of West New York Avenue, a native of Daytona Beach, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Roberts attended schools in Atlanta and moved back to this area more than 15 years ago. A Green Beret, he served in the 101st Airborne 82nd Division during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart and many other medals.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Mason, Atlanta; his father, Gerald Roberts, Lake Helen; his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Ira Adams, New Smyrna Beach; three brothers, Gerry Roberts, Lake Helen, Paul Adams, Ocoee, and Ralph Adams, Mountain Center, Calif.; a sister, Shelley Strezo, Shreveport, La.; and two grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Walter Shawd

DEC. 19, 1921 -- APRIL 12, 2005

PORT ORANGE -- Walter Philip Shawd, 83, of Fleming Avenue, who worked as a starter and ranger at the Daytona Beach Golf and Country Club before his retirement in 1992, died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Shawd moved here in 1973 from his birthplace, Kenton, Ohio. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 116th Regiment Company L during the D-Day Invasion. He was a former member of United Presbyterian Church, Kenton, and the Elks Club. Mr. Shawd enjoyed golf.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana Ball, Port Orange; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Hannah Cremation, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Wardell Simmons

JAN. 28, 1919 -- APRIL 13, 2005

LAKE HELEN -- Wardell Simmons, 86, of Simmons Lane, a former caretaker, died Wednesday at Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, DeLand.

Mrs. Simmons was born in Lake Helen. She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include five sons, Edwin Simmons, Daytona Beach, Keith and Kenneth Smith, both of Lake Helen, Norris Smith, Tampa, and Joseph Simmons, Philadelphia; four daughters, Brenda Mays, Lake Helen, Irma White, Hampton, Va., and Marian Chappell and Sandra Hailey, both of Dallas; three sisters, Althea Bevel, DeLand, Lois Taylor, San Diego, and Earnestine Hall, New York City; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mack, DeLand, is in charge.

Douglas Spence

APRIL 19, 1960 -- APRIL 12, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Douglas James Spence, 44, of Broadmoor Circle, the former manager of several businesses on the Boardwalk in Daytona Beach for 10 years, and current manager of The Midway, died Tuesday on Earl Street in Daytona Beach.

Mr. Spence was born in Camp LeJeune, N.C., and moved to this area in 1973 from Oneonta, N.Y. He enjoyed the beach.

Survivors include a son, Sean; his parents, William and Helen Spence, Ormond Beach; four brothers, Mike and Steve, both of Holly Hill, Billy, DeLand, and Jack, Sanford; and three sisters, Kathy Poole and Patty Thomas, both of Holly Hill, and Sue Close, Ormond Beach. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Helen Stiles

OCT. 21, 1918 -- APRIL 13, 2005

PORT ORANGE -- Helen C. "Red" Stiles, 86, of City Center Drive, the widow of former Daytona Beach Shores Police Chief Charles Stiles, died Wednesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Stiles, a homemaker, was born in Flatwoods, W.Va. She owned the former Hacienda Hotel in Daytona Beach Shores.

Survivors include a brother, James Enoch, Craigsville, W.Va.; and four grandchildren. Volusia County Cremation, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Orva Walker

JULY 1, 1921 -- APRIL 13, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Orva Walker, 83, of Freedom Lane, a retired title clerk in the automotive industry, died Wednesday at the Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Walker, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., and moved to this area in 1999 from Fredericksburg, Va. He enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Evelyn; a son, Robert, Brandon; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren. Lohman Daytona is in charge.

Clarence Ward

DEC. 27, 1925 -- APRIL 13, 2005

FLAGLER BEACH -- Clarence W. Ward, 79, of Claremount Drive, a resident since 1975, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Ward, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Maysville, Ky., and came here from Hebron, Ky. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and carpentry.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nancy; a daughter, Debbie Sites, Barnardsville, N.C.; two brothers, Herman and J.D., both of Maysville; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Craig-Flagler Palms is in charge.

Carol Wichterman

APRIL 20, 1919 -- APRIL 11, 2005

PORT BURWELL, Ontario -- Carol Josephine Wichterman, 85, of Port Burwell, a former resident of West Volusia County from 1981 to 1993, died Monday at a hospital in Ontario.

Mrs. Wichterman, a homemaker, was born in Jacksonville, and moved to West Volusia from Fort Lauderdale. She was a quilter, painter and cook.

Survivors include two sons, Donald, Orange City, and Rusty, Panama City Beach; two daughters, Carol Sue Kenimer, Deltona, and Laurena Smith, Port Burwell; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Ostrander's Funeral Home, Ontario, is in charge.

Edward Jankovic Jr.

MARCH 24, 1939 -- JULY 19, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Edward Jerome Jankovic Jr., 65, of Juniper Lane, who was a self-employed electrical contractor in South Florida, died Monday at home.

Mr. Jankovic was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved here in 2003 from Melbourne. He enjoyed fixing things, gardening and collecting coins.

Survivors include a son, James, Ormond Beach; two daughters, Nicole Bookhultz, Pasadena, Md., and Leslie Miller, Pompano Beach; his mother, Ruth Jankovic, Boca Raton; a brother, Paul, Frankford, Del.; and seven grandchildren. Newlife Cremation is in charge.

Ruth Jenary

NOV. 3, 1925 -- JULY 20, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Ruth Jenary, 78, of Dixie Avenue, a native of Punxsutawney, Pa., died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Jenary, a homemaker, moved to this area in 2003 from Mesa, Ariz. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Punxsutawney, where she served on the Altar Guild and was awarded the Bishop's Cross for her service, and attended St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach. Mrs. Jenary volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 20 years in Punxsutawney and was named Woman of the Year. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross stitch and crochet.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Bianco and Linda Dunmire, both of Holly Hill; a brother, Thomas Heckendorn, Ellwood, Pa.; a sister, Annamae Heckendorn, Holly Hill; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Gift of Remembrance Headquarters, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road, Suite 415, Maitland, FL 32751-7105. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.
