NOV. 1, 1941 -- JUNE 26, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Herman G. Vickery, 62, of Long Grove Lane, a retired postal worker, died Saturday at Satilla Regional Medical Center, Waycross, Ga.

Mr. Vickery, an Army veteran, moved here in 1997 from Atlanta, his birthplace. He was a member of International Christian Center, Daytona Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Patti; a son, Douglas, Fairbanks, Alaska.; two daughters, Pam League, Cummings, Ga., and Viki, Alaska; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Dorrell, and Karen Upchurch, both of Fort Lauderdale; and seven grandchildren. Shannon, Port Orange, is in charge.

Pauline Shuler

AUG. 27, 1920 -- JUNE 25, 2004

BUNNELL -- Pauline Wright Shuler, 83, a resident since 1981, died Friday at home.

Mrs. Shuler, a homemaker, was born in Enterprise, Ala., and moved here from Conway, S.C. She was a member of Pierson United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shuler enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a son, Gary, Bunnell; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Hannah Cremation, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Florence Yerxa

MARCH 3, 1913 -- JUNE 27, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Florence Rebecca Yerxa, 91, of Clyde Morris Boulevard, a native of Minneapolis, died Sunday at Ormond in the Pines.

Mrs. Yerxa, a homemaker, moved here in 1991 from Zimmerman, Minn.

Survivors include her husband of 13 years, Donald; four daughters, Judy Huro, Flagler Beach, Jeanne Munsinger, Palm Coast, Joyce Mitchell, Denver, and Janet Simpson, San Diego; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Joseph Astarita
JAN. 11, 1919 -- JUNE 28, 2004

DELTONA -- Joseph John Astarita, 85, of Fourth Avenue North, a retired shipping clerk, died Monday at home.

Mr. Astarita, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved here in 1981. He was captured on Wake Island and held as a prisoner of war for four years in Japan and China. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mr. Astarita enjoyed drawing a reading.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Theresa; three brothers, Edward, Babylon, N.Y., Salvatore, Brooklyn, and John, Scarsdale, N.Y.; and a sister, Rose Agostinnachio, Deltona. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Gift of Remembrance Headquarters, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road, Suite 415, Maitland, FL 32751-7105. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Robert Baker

SEPT. 10, 1913 -- JUNE 30, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Robert A. Baker, 90, of Beulah Drive, a meat cutter for Sorrell's Grocery, New Smyrna Beach for 18 years before his retirement, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Baker was born in Piqua, Ohio, and moved here in 1973 from Covington, Ohio. He was a member of the Brethren Church, Covington.

Survivors include five sons, Harold and Steven, both of New Smyrna Beach, Joseph, Edgewater, Donald, Piqua, and Dennis, St. Paris, Ohio; a daughter, Joyce Shaffner, Edgewater; two sisters, Helen Kingsley and Harriet Slack, both of Piqua; 25 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.

Rebecca Baur

FEB. 26, 1953 -- JUNE 29, 2004

PONCE INLET -- Rebecca Lynne Baur, 51, of South Peninsula Drive, a secretary, died Tuesday at home.

Mrs. Baur, an Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm, came to this area in 1957 from her native Toledo, Ohio. She was a member of Christ the Healer Church, Edmonton, Ky. Mrs. Baur graduated from Seabreeze High School and Daytona Beach Community College. She enjoyed World War II and Native American history, animals and making homemade greeting cards.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Graham, Ponce Inlet, and Neil Soto, Michigan; her mother, Bea Pyle, Ponce Inlet; her father, Jim, Jacksonville; a brother, Frank Jr., Melbourne; a sister, Susan Franz, Charleston, S.C.; and a stepsister, Patricia Ellis, Daytona Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or to the Halifax Humane Society, P.O. Box 9035, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-9035. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Florence Beverly

FEB. 28, 1920 -- JUNE 25, 2004

PALM COAST -- Florence J. Beverly, 84, of Bayside Drive, who worked for the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C., died Friday at Florida Hospital-Flagler.

Mrs. Beverly, a member of Palm Coast United Methodist Church, moved here in 1990 from her native Washington, D.C. An avid baseball fan, Mrs. Beverly enjoyed travel.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Young, Palm Coast; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home, St. Augustine, is in charge.

Selena Bueno

AUG. 3, 1976 -- JUNE 26, 2004

SEVILLE -- Selena Denise Dale Bueno, 27, of New Hope Villa, a resident since 1993, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-DeLand. An autopsy is pending.

Mrs. Bueno, a homemaker, was born in Fernandina Beach, and moved here from Crescent City. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Crescent City. She enjoyed reading and yard sales.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Noe; two sons, Travis Dale and Noel Bueno, and three daughters, Reina, Demetria and Jessica Bueno, all of Seville; her mother, Vera Prevatt, and maternal grandmother, Wannell Alt, both of DeLand; two brothers, Kelly Dodd, San Mateo, and Jerry Dale, Palatka; and two sisters, Christina Prevatt, San Mateo, and Trinia Dale, Palatka. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

John Capelli

FEB. 12, 1961 -- JUNE 29, 2004

DELTONA -- The Rev. John Roger Phillips Capelli, 43, of West Huron Drive, the pastor of several local ministries, died Tuesday at home.

Rev. Capelli was born in Chicago and moved here in 1988 from Tulsa, Okla., where he graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center. He was pastor of Just Kids Ministry, Word of Life Ministries, Faith Fellowship and Faith Breakthrough, all in Orange City. He also headed Faith Bible and Ministry School in Orange City and at Tomoka State Correctional Facility. He also participated in Project Turning Point in Daytona Beach and Kairos, a prison ministry. Rev. Capelli participated in Toughman competitions and was known as the "Pounding Preacher." He enjoyed golf and playing paintball with his children.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Kelly; a son, Forrest, Deltona; two daughters, April, Deltona, and Alicia Owens, serving in the Army in Iraq; his parents, Nelson and Antoinette Capelli, Chiefland; and a sister, Kathleen Mullins, Archer. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Timothy Cunningham

JULY 7, 1934 -- JULY 28, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Timothy J. Cunningham, 69, of Magnolia Loop, a 32-year employee with American Airlines, died Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Cunningham, a Navy veteran, moved to this area in 1992 from Brooklyn, N.Y., his birthplace. He was a member of the American Legion, Daytona Beach, the Elks Lodge, Port Orange, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards and singing.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 412 S. Palmetto Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Clymer Cremation, Bunnell, is in charge.

Shirley Edelman

OCT. 26, 1918 -- JUNE 28, 2004

DELAND -- Shirley Edelman, 85, a resident since 1957, died Monday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Edelman, a homemaker, was born in New Haven, Conn., and moved here from Chicago.

Survivors include a son, Bernard, Ormond Beach; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. Beth Shalom Memorial Chapel, Orlando, is in charge.

Herbert Hatfield

OCT. 23, 1916 -- JUNE 29, 2004

HAINES CITY -- The Rev. Herbert M. Hatfield, a former pastor of a Daytona Beach Baptist church, died Tuesday at Winter Haven Hospital, Winter Haven.

Rev. Hatfield was born in Pike County, Ky., and moved to Central Florida in 1963 from Elmira, N.Y. He pastored churches in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. He also organized and directed rescue missions in these states. Rev. Hatfield was a member of Landmark Baptist Church, Haines City, served as intern pastor in several of its mission churches and with the church prison ministry in Stark.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Irene; three sons, Herbert Jr., Aberdeen, Miss., D. Rodney, Washington, D.C., and Paul, Port Richey; a daughter, Merilynn Chew, Haines City; a brother, Roy, Houston; sister, Myrtle Varney, Berkley Springs, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Preachers Boys Fund, co Landmark Baptist Church, 810 Hinson Ave. E., Haines City, FL 33844. Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City, is in charge.

Eugene Heberger

JUNE 23, 1930 -- JUNE 30, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Eugene Austin Heberger, 84, of Dresden Court, an electrical engineer for Singer Corp. before his retirement, died Wednesday at Community Hospital, Palm Bay.

Born in Irondequoit, N.Y., Mr. Heberger, an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, moved here in 1988 from New York. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, DeBary, and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing of America, Daytona Beach Chapter. He enjoyed golf.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Catalano, Palm Bay; four sisters, Irma Rickards, Florida, and Helen Moore, Norma Cali and Bernadine DuBeil, all of New York; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.
