Ruth Smith

JULY 28, 1917 -- JUNE 8, 2004

DELAND -- Ruth W. Smith, 86, of South Brooks Avenue, a retired accounting technician for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, died Tuesday at Sterling House of DeLand.

Mrs. Smith was born in Goldsboro, N.C., and moved to this area in 1979 from Washington, D.C. She was a member of The Sanctuary Church of God.

Survivors include a sister, Sarah Jones, Mount Olive, N.C.; two nephews, Raymond Murphy, Alexandria, Va., and Benjamin Jones, and a friend, Dorothy Smith, Alexandria, all of whom provided for her care. Mack is in charge.

Edward Ward

APRIL 30, 1933 -- JUNE 8, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Edward F. Ward, 71, a firefighter who reached the rank of battalion chief in Jersey City, N.J., before his retirement, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mr. Ward, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, was born in Jersey City, and moved here in 1996 from New Jersey. He was a member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church and Father Eamon Gill Knights of Columbus. He also was a fourth degree knight with Knight of Columbus Corpus Christi, Flagler Beach. He was a cursillo at Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Kay; a son, Mark, Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Colleen Baird, Atlanta, and Maureen Radwanski, Brick, N.J.; a brother, Charles Ward, Pembroke Pines; a sister, Ann O'Leary, Leesburg; and four grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Knight of Columbus No. 13018, P.O. Box 2507, Ormond Beach, FL 32175. Ormond Funeral Home is in charge.

Fred Wenger

JULY 25, 1924 -- JUNE 8, 2004

ORMOND-BY-THE-SEA -- Fred G. Wenger, 79, of Sand Dollar Drive, a vice president of RCA in Camden, N.J., died Tuesday at home.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Mr. Wenger, an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, came to this area from Cape May Court House, N.J. He was a graduate of Ohio State University. He was a member of Riverview United Methodist Church, the Masons and the Shriners. An avid golfer, Mr. Wenger enjoyed travel.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty; a son, Fred "Kip"; a daughter, Patricia Gable; a sister, Elinore; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Riverview United Methodist Church, 2253 John Anderson Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32176. Daytona Funeral Home, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Milton Becker

OCT. 24, 1924 -- JUNE 6, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Milton A. Becker, 79, of Schooner Avenue, a retired college administrator, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Becker, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Green Bay, Wis., and moved here in 1990 from Wisconsin. He was a lifetime member and past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge in Fond du Lac, Wis., and also was chair of the Wisconsin Elks Association Constitution Committee for many years. A member of American Legion Post, Crivitz, Wis., he also was active in the Edgewater Landing Neighborhood Watch and their bridge, boating and fishing club. Mr. Becker earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh and his master's degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. An avid bridge player, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling on cruises and to his Navy reunions.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; two sons, Michael, Shawano, Wis., and Terry, Fond du Lac; a daughter, Patricia Becker, St. Louis; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Settle-Wilder, Edgewater, is in charge.

William Brown

JUNE 18, 1923 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DELTONA -- William A. Brown, 80, of Summit Hill Drive, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, died Monday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial, Orange City.

Mr. Brown, a veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, was born in Chismville, Ark., and moved here in 2003 from Wichita, Kan. He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Community and the Masons. Mr. Brown enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley El-Shami, Deltona; his mother, Mamie Williams, Danville, Ark.; a sister, Mary Etta Foster, Havana, Ark.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Michael Buckler

FEB. 24, 1957 -- JUNE 6, 2004

DELTONA -- Michael T. Buckler, 47, of West Harbor Drive, a lineman for 27 years with BellSouth, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Buckler, an Army veteran, was born in England, and moved here from Miami in 1994. He was a commissioner for Pop Warner Football and also served as a coach for Pop Warner's Orange City Knights and Pony Baseball. Mr. Buckler was a member of the Communication Workers of America.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Kathy; three sons, Jason, Jesse and Kevin, and a daughter, Kristen Patelsky, all of Deltona; his mother, Margaret Buckler, Tacoma, Wash.; five brothers, Phillip, Tacoma, Joe, Chattanooga, Tenn., John, Seattle, Jim, Charleston, S.C., and Jeff, Lafayette, La.; three sisters, Pam Jenkins, Bentonville, Ark., Mary Smith, Lumberton, N.C., and Dede Earnst, Moncks Corner, S.C. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Richard Christiansen

AUG. 9, 1924 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Richard H. Christiansen, 79, of Marina Point Drive, a former lobbyist in Washington, D.C., for the 3M Co., died Monday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Born in St. Paul, Minn., Mr. Christiansen an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, moved here in 1980 from Grand Island, N.Y. He also taught at the University of Buffalo. He earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Iowa and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Texas. Mr. Christiansen was a member of the Shriners and Jesters.

Survivors include his wife of eight years, Doris; a stepson, James Rosensteele, Grand Island; a stepdaughter, Donna Adams, Victoria, British Columbia; a brother, Robert, Las Vegas; and four grandchildren. Memorial donation may be made to the Shriner Burn Center, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 32189. Baggett & Summers is in charge.

Carole Cogdill

APRIL 17, 1939 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DELAND -- Carole Smith Cogdill, 65, of Gracie Drive, who retired from Kellar Cabinets, died Monday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial, Orange City.

A native of DeLand, Mrs. Cogdill was a 1957 graduate of DeLand High School. She was a member of New Life Bible Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Sara Marten, DeBary, and Edie Maiden, Ormond Beach; a sister, Marilyn Gray, DeLand; and two grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Senora Dees

SEPT. 23, 1981 -- SEPT. 23, 1981

DELAND -- Senora Heather Dees, 22, of Grand Avenue, a resident since 1990, died Monday at home.

Ms. Dees moved here from her native Kinston, N.C.

Survivors include her father, John Dees, Palm City; her mother, Lindsey Dees, Port St. Lucie; and two stepbrothers, Michael Dees, Melbourne, and Stephen Dees, Wilmington, N.C. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Eddie DeNauro

JULY 15, 1929 -- JUNE 7, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Eddie DeNauro, 74, of Louise Street, a retired self-employed house painter, died Monday at home.

Mr. DeNauro, a Navy veteran, was born in Utica, N.Y., and moved to this area in 1974 from Lee, Mass. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and served as rector for Lighthouse Via de Cristo No. 18.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Ann"; a son, Bill, New Smyrna Beach; three daughters, Linda Graham, Holly Hill, Noreen Reynolds, Lee, and Tina Provost, New Lebanon, N.Y.; two brothers, Ralph, New Smyrna Beach, and Tony, Pinehurst, N.C.; a sister, Bernice Miller, Selkirk, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129, or to the Church of the Nazarene, 201 S. Orange St., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168. Bernice Gemp

SEPT. 1, 1912 -- JUNE 8, 2004

PALM COAST -- Bernice Stevenson Gemp, 91, of Laurel Drive East, a resident since 1999, died Tuesday at Grand Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Gemp was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., and moved to this area from Toms River, N.J. She enjoyed gardening and bowling.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Kane, Palm Coast; a stepson, John Stevenson, Bozman, Md.; a brother, Francis Chichester, and a sister, Mildred Headley, both of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Arthur Adams
JAN. 30, 1944 -- SEPT. 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Arthur Lee Adams, 60, of Emma Street, who retired from the City of Daytona Beach Water Department, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Adams was born in Columbus, Ga., and moved here in 1958 from Alabama.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary; three sons, Arthur Jr., Johnny and Robert, all of Daytona Beach; seven brothers, Allen, Luieteant, Albert, Arthur and Lorenzo, all of Alabama, and Johnny and L.W., South Carolina; four sisters, Peggy and Linda Morris and Lillie Harris, all of Alabama, and Sue Morris, New Jersey; and 12 grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Eleanor Bunting

MARCH 10, 1921 -- SEPT. 17, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Eleanor Alma Bunting, 83, of South State Road 415, a Volusia County School bus driver, died Friday at home.

Born in Methuen, Mass., Mrs. Bunting came here in 1975 from Atkinson, N.H. She was a former member of the Samsula Women's Club where she served as president and was a 10-year Hospice volunteer. She enjoyed shopping and gardening.

Survivors include her husband Arthur; three sons, Art Jr., San Diego, Bill, Richmond, Va., and Barry, Woodland Park, Colo.; a daughter, Betty Caldwell, Ormond Beach; a sister, Nancy Kyle, Haverhill, Mass.; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
