Edward Wakeman

MAY 31, 1918 -- JUNE 6, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Edward M. Wakeman, 86, of North Williamson Boulevard, a native of Edinburg, Va., died Sunday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Wakeman, a Navy veteran of World War II, was a retired businessman. He moved here in 1978 from Oregon. Mr. Wakeman was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Palm Coast, and was a former member of the Elks Lodge and Flagler County Shrine Temple. He also was a 32nd degree Mason.

Survivors include a son, Philip, and a daughter, Patricia Olson, both of Palm Coast; a sister, Edith Densmore, Jacksonville; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Joseph Witkowski

MARCH 29, 1909 -- JUNE 6, 2004

DELTONA -- Joseph John Witkowski, 95, of West Village Drive, a machinist for Mesta Machine Co., Pittsburgh, died Sunday at Jefferson Hills Nursing Home, Jefferson Hills, Pa.

Mr. Witkowski, a native of Hays, Pa., moved here in 1968 from Pittsburgh. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, Holy Name Society and the Holy Angels Catholic Church, both of Pennsylvania, and a past president and treasurer of the Anglers Club, Clairton, Pa. He enjoyed bowling, playing the fiddle, dancing, hunting, fly fishing and making flies for fly fishing.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew, Pittsburgh, and Clair "C.J.", Ligonier, Pa.; a daughter, Joan Podunavac, DeBary; 12 grandchildren, including Bill Cavins, Winter Park, who helped provide for his care; and 20 great-grandchildren. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Carol Moreira

DEC. 20, 1945 -- JUNE 6, 2004

PALM COAST -- Carol Moreira, 58, of Butternut Drive, a native of Yonkers, N.Y., died Sunday at Florida Hospital-Flagler.

Mrs. Moreira, who worked as a clerk for a school district in New York, moved here in 2001 from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and the American Portuguese Culture Club.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Francisco; three sons, Frank Jr., Ormond Beach, Joseph, Palm Coast, and Michael, Putnam Valley, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Mencham, Patterson, N.Y., and Maria DePoto, Mount Kisco, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Palm Coast Funeral Home is in charge.

Lois Porter

DEC. 2, 1918 -- JUNE 5, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Lois A. Porter, 85, of Pioneer Trail, a resident since 1990, died Saturday at Bert Fish Medical Center.

Mrs. Porter, a homemaker, was born in Fries, Va., and moved here from Cripple Creek, Va. She was an avid bridge player at the Brannon Senior Center and AARP and was an active volunteer with the Council on Aging. Mrs. Porter helped in initiating the local Meals on Wheels program.

Survivors include three daughters, Eleanor Testerman and Kathryn Wagner, both of New Smyrna Beach, and Susan Fabian, Keystone Heights; a sister, Catherine Sayers, Staunton, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Council on Aging, 403 Magnolia St., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168. Dudley, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Walter Wojcik

MAY 10, 1914 -- JUNE 4, 2004

PALM COAST -- Walter A. Wojcik, 90, a sheet metal foreman for Tam Metal Co., Carlstadt, N.J., before his retirement, died Friday at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton, N.J.

Born in Marsteller, Pa., Mr. Wojcik was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, Garfield, N.J. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7845 and the Palm Coast Men's Club, the Chopin Singing Association, Passaic, N.J., Polish Singers Alliance of America and AARP.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, Walter Jr., Clifton, N.J.; two daughters, Dolores Betza, Boynton Beach, and Carole Genovese, East Windsor, N.J.; a brother, Frank, Boca Raton; five sisters, Ann Lanzara, Passaic, Verne Ramondo and Irene Lewandoski, both of Garfield, N.J., Sophie Kurnath, Warwick, N.Y., and Julia Anszperger, Massachusetts; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Kamienski Funeral Home, Garfield, is in charge.

Mary Gibbs

JUNE 18, 1921 -- JUNE 5, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Mary K. Gibbs, 82, of Old Dunlawton Avenue, who retired from the Volusia County Sheriff's Department in 1987, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center.

Mrs. Gibbs, who worked for the Volusia County Juvenile Court from 1959 to 1971, was born in Dubois, Pa., and moved to this area in 1947 from Buffalo, N.Y. She was a member of Harbor Oaks First Baptist Church and was actively involved with the Port Orange Firemen's Auxiliary, the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes. Mrs. Gibbs also was a former president of the Port Orange Elementary P.T.A.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas, Daytona Beach, Richard, Port Orange, and Gordon, Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen Stimson, Edgewater; three brothers, Walter Grazulis, Mesquite, Texas, Anthony Grazulis, Buffalo, and Vincent Grazulis, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Shannon is in charge.

Robert Hannahs

MARCH 10, 1916 -- JUNE 5, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Robert Hannahs, 88, of Shady Branch Trail, a millwright for American Brass Co. in Kenosha, Wis., before his retirement, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Hannahs, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Kenosha and moved to this area in 1980 from Green Valley, Ariz. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Kenosha and a lifetime member of the New Smyrna Conservation Hunt Club and the Halifax Humane Society. He also was a member of the Wednesday Club at Billy's Taproom. He graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison Layton School of Art. He was a Boy Scout leader for 35 years and was awarded the Silver Beaver for dedicated service. An avid gunsmith, Mr. Hannahs enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel, particularly cruises.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Eve; a son, R. Stephen, Newport Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Nancy Hannahs, Prescott, Ariz., Judy Seps, Ormond Beach, and Lauren Riel, Deerfield Beach; a sister, Edna Seaman, Florida; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or the Halifax Humane Society, P.O. Box 9035, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-9035. Henry Julien

DEC. 31, 1931 -- MAY 30, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Henry D. Julien, 72, of North Hollywood Avenue, a real estate broker, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Julien was an Air Force veteran reaching the rank of second lieutenant. He enjoyed playing bridge, photography and flying.

Survivors include Tammy Hall, Daytona Beach, who provided for his care. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Charles Lynch

SEPT. 4, 1927 -- JUNE 4, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Charles Lynch, 76, of Amberwood Court, who was self-employed in the real estate business, died Friday at home.

Mr. Lynch moved to this area in 1973 from Long Island, N.Y. He sang at the Mill Pond Inn in New York in the 1940s and 50s and played minor league baseball on a New York Yankee farm team.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Regina; two sons, James, Ormond Beach, and Charles Jr. "Todd, " Ormond-by-the-Sea; a sister, Lenora Krumenacker, Long Island; and four grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Bernice Minich

OCT. 31, 1919 -- JUNE 4, 2004

DELTONA -- Bernice E. Minich, 84, of Little Palm Drive, a former assistant for an optometrist, died Friday at Orange City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, DeBary.

Born in Michigan, Mrs. Minich moved to this area in 1965. She belonged to the AARP and enjoyed travel.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis, Deltona, and Gary, Concord, Mich.; a daughter, Linda Cooley, California; a sister, Virtue Gerrish, Sedona, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Joseph Polchinski

MARCH 15, 1916 -- JUNE 4, 2004

PALM COAST -- Joseph M. Polchinski, 88, of Filbert Lane, a lieutenant with the New York City Police Department before his retirement, died Friday at home.

Mr. Polchinski was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and moved to this area in 1981 from Whitestone, N.Y. He was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church. An avid reader, Mr. Polchinski enjoyed golf, jogging and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice; a son, Michael, Oceanside, N.Y.; four daughters, Ellen Giannone, Daytona Beach, and Veronica Polchinski, Virginia Cody and Patricia Spadea, all of Palm Coast; a brother, Matthew, New York; two sisters, Mary Maitland, Mount Vernon, N.Y., and Cecilia Robl, Stroudsburg, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Johnathan Scisco

MARCH 18, 1980 -- JUNE 4, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Johnathan Michael Scisco, 24, of Three Bears Trail, a tow truck operator, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Scisco moved here in 2003 from his native Neptune, N.J. He enjoyed motorcycles.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Fred and Pat Bennett, Neptune; his mother and stepfather, Denise and Joseph Mercolino, Ormond Beach; a sister, Michelle Scisco, Ormond Beach; and his paternal grandfather, John Scisco, Farmingdale, N.J. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Helen Sobieraj

JAN. 3, 1917 -- JUNE 2, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Helen J. Sobieraj, 87, of Ridgewood Avenue, an attendant at the New York State Hospital before her retirement, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mrs. Sobieraj moved to this area in 1973 from her native Utica, N.Y. She was a member of Sacred Heart Polish Catholic Church, New York Mills, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Richard, Myers Flat, Calif. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.
