PHILADELPHIA -- Leroy James Padgett, 67, of Philadelphia, a DeLand native, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Philadelphia.
Mr. Padgett, a retired self-employed laborer, moved to Philadelphia from DeLand many years ago.
Survivors include his mother, Ada Sullivan, DeLand; and seven sisters, Pat Sullivan and Lillian Hill, both of DeLand, Carrye Jackson, East Orange, N.J., Mary Cochran and Martha McClendon, both of Tampa, Vickie Lane, Atlanta, and Beverly Smith, Hampton, Va. Mack, DeLand, is in charge.

DELTONA -- Mary Ritter, 93, of Coronado Terrace, a resident since 1962, died Friday at Regents Park, Winter Park.
Mrs. Ritter, a homemaker, moved here from her native Pittsburgh.
Survivors include two sons, John, Monroeville, Pa., and Gary, Thomasville, Ga.; a brother, Richard Pelc, Pittsburgh; a sister, Ann Viehbeck, Miami Springs; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.
Alice Saxon

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Alice E. Saxon, 83, of East 16th Avenue, a registered nurse at Mountainside Hospital, Glen Ridge, N.J., before her retirement, died Wednesday at Bert Fish Medical Center.
Born in Bloomfield, N.J., Mrs. Saxon, a Women's Army Corps veteran of World War II, moved to this area in 1992 from Upper Montclair, N.J. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

OAK HILL -- Albert Junior Spray, 76, of Mae Street, a resident since 1986, died Thursday at home.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., Mr. Spray, an Army veteran, moved here from Sanford. He retired as an auto mechanic. He was a member of the Sanford Moose Lodge. Mr. Spray enjoyed fishing, bowling and craft shows.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Ann; five sons, James R., Daytona Beach, James A., Polk County, Alvin, Sanford, Jay, Ocala, and Edward, Grant, Ala.; a daughter, Patricia Dean, New Hope, Ala.; three stepsons, Dan Halcomb, Lawrenceburg, Ind., Dennis Halcomb, Okena, Ohio, and Donald Halcomb, North Bend, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Donna Hubbard, Harrison, Ohio; 29 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Audrey Wetherell

OSTEEN -- Audrey S. Wetherell, 75, of Kove Boulevard, a resident since 1991, died Thursday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial, Orange City.
Born in Selby, S.D., Mrs. Wetherell, a homemaker, moved to this area from Cortland, N.Y. She was a member of First Methodist Church, Cortland. She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Larry; three sons, Gary, Deltona, John, Cortland, and Phillip, Homer, N.Y.; two daughters, Laurel Bearup, Truxton, N.Y., and Marcia Carter, Swazey, Ind.; a brother, Courtney Schwanke, Jersey Shore, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Edgar Anderson, 84
NANTUCKET, Mass. -- Edgar A. "Ted" Anderson pulled up stakes and moved to Daytona Beach in 1950 to try something new.
Anderson, 84, who died Saturday at a hospital in Nantucket, was a newspaperman in New York and New Jersey before his move, working as a reporter, rewrite man and copyreader.
He left the newspaper world behind when he came here. He bought a motel and package store on Atlantic Avenue and started a business in which he sold televisions and radios to motels in Florida and Georgia.
"In those days, motel guests had to drop a coin in a slot in order to watch television or listen to radios, " said Anderson's son, Peter, a resident of Ormond Beach.
By 1955, Anderson had sold his motel and began the career from which he would retire -- teaching.
"I was a student at Longstreet Elementary School when a teacher left in the middle of the year, " Peter Anderson said. "They asked my dad if he would help out, and he finished out the year."
Anderson attended Stetson University to earn his teaching credentials and taught English at Seabreeze Junior High School until he retired in 1970.
A summer resident of Nantucket since 1927, Anderson wrote a children's book, "Salt in Their Hair, " in the 1950s. Peter Anderson said the book was based on his and his brother's childhood in Nantucket. Peter Anderson said his father wrote another book in collaboration with his junior high school students, although he couldn't remember the exact name.
"I remember it was based on his students, " he said. "Once a week he would meet with them and go over what he had written. They helped him with the jargon that kids used and they also helped with proofreading."
After his retirement, Anderson moved to Nantucket permanently, returning to Daytona Beach during Christmas vacations, his son said.
He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He also was a past president of the Volusia County English Teachers Association.

DELAND -- Danielle Renee Bright, of South Delaware Avenue, the stillborn daughter of Kerry Williams and Sylvester Bright Jr., died Saturday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

PIERSON -- Leonard Butts, 52, of West Ohio Street, a native of Columbus, Ga., died Saturday at home.
Mr. Butts was a member of Pierson Church of God.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Ophelia; five sons, Leonard Jr. and Leon Butts, both of Atlanta, Lorenzo Butts and Carl Padget, both of Pierson, and Tyrone Hankins, Seville; his stepfather, Willie Strickland, two brothers, Charles Crowder and Willie Strickland Jr., and a sister, Janice Strickland, all of Atlanta; and five grandchildren. Bartholmew Cuomo

DAYTONA BEACH -- Bartholmew Robert Cuomo, 68, of Roth Street, an elevator operator and dispatcher for 25 years with the City of New York, died Friday at Huntington Nursing Center.
A native of the Bronx, N.Y., Mr. Cuomo moved here from New York in 2001.

PORT ORANGE -- Viola D. DeNike, 91, of Farmbrook Road, a former office assistant at S.S. Kresge Co. in Winter Park, died Thursday at Harbor Oaks Elderly Care Center.
Mrs. DeNike was born in Huntsville, Ontario, and moved here in 1973 from Winter Park.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Marjorie Anderson, Port Orange; and two sisters, Flossie Gregory and Alice Haines, both of Scarsborough, Ontario. Cardwell & Maloney is in charge.
Fredrick Fritsch

ORMOND BEACH -- Fredrick L. Fritsch, 86, of Stanford Avenue, a pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 42 years, died Sunday at his daughter's Ormond Beach home.
Mr. Fritsch was born in Allentown, Pa., and came to this area in 1982 from Havertown, Pa. He also was a vice president of the Philadelphia Council of Churches and chaplain of three Boy Scout Jamborees. Mr. Fritsch was a graduate of Muhlenberg College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa. He officiated over 700 weddings and 1300 baptisms.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Doris; two sons, David and Robert, both of Philadelphia; a daughter, Marna, Ormond Beach; and three grandchildren. ORANGE CITY -- Ramona Lucille "Mona" Hackerman, 65, of South Carpenter Avenue, a marketing administrative assistant for John Knox Village, died Sunday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
Mrs. Hackerman moved here in 1977 from her native Dayton, Ohio. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 3800, Ormond Beach, and Moose Lodge 1170, Clermont.
