Susan Downs
PALM COAST -- Susan P. Downs, 83, of Kings Colony Court North, an operator of a thrift store for the Diocese of St. Augustine Catholic Church, died Saturday at Flagler Pines.
Mrs. Downs was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and came here in 1996 from St. Augustine. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include her husband of six years, John "Jack"; a son, Michael Odom, Maine; a daughter, Sharon Jeffery, Boston; and several grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, East Volusia Unit, 146 Orange Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Craig is in charge.

John Egan
DAYTONA BEACH -- John Egan, 58, of Mobile Avenue, an electrician, died Jan. 25 at home.
Mr. Egan moved to this area in 1978 from Mount Vernon, N.Y., his birthplace.
No known immediate local relatives survive. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Geraldine Fleming
DELTONA -- Geraldine R. Fleming, 84, of Copperfield Avenue, who retired as the head of sales at Gimbel's Department Store, died Monday at University Center East, DeLand.
Mrs. Fleming was born in Altoona, Pa., and moved to this area several years ago. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Providence and the AARP.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, James; three daughters, Patricia Beichler, Altoona, Shirley Eberly, Delaware City, Del., and Michele Beitsinger, Clinton, Pa.; a sister, Lois Shaw, Port St. Lucie; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Emro Harcarik
DELAND -- Emro A. Harcarik, 69, of Robinwood Drive, the founder and president of the Aladdin Electric Co. in Pompano Beach, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital-Ormond Beach.
Mr. Harcarik, an Army veteran, was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He moved to this area last year from Fort Lauderdale. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Mr. Harcarik enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Catherine; a son, David, San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Mary Sagehorn, Deerfield Beach, and Patty Atha, Whitefish, Mont.; three brothers, Fredrick, Wilkes-Barre, Robert, Coconut Creek, and Albert, Valencia, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Leo Hauser
ENTERPRISE, Ala. -- Leo Mark Hauser, 81, of Griffin Street, the father of Ruthmarie Apker, Daytona Beach, died Jan. 28 at Medical Center Enterprise.
Mr. Hauser, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Shepard, Mich., and moved to Enterprise 16 years ago. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Additional survivors include his wife, Ruthmary; a son, Leo Jr., Kissimmee; two more daughters, Sara-Jo Wiscombe, Enterprise, Beth Glynn, Kalamazoo, Mich.; two brothers, Charles, Hartford, Mich., and Robert, Waterford, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Patterson-Sorrells, Enterprise, Ala., is in charge

Sandra Hester
DELAND -- Sandra L. Hester, 51, of Cecil Avenue, an assistant manager of Handy Way, died Tuesday as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on U.S. 17 and 92 south of DeLand.
Mrs. Hester was born in Virginia, and moved here in 1972 from Lakeland. She attended Praise Chapel.
Survivors include a son, Ben, Orange City; two daughters, Jennifer and Melodie, both of DeLand; a sister, Candi Carter, West Virginia; and six grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Clara Jersey
ORMOND BEACH -- Clara May Jersey, 83, of Beau Ravage Drive, who ran the Village Wagon beach concession, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital-Ormond Beach.
Ms. Jersey was born in Freedom, Pa., and moved here 46 years ago from Madison, Ohio. She enjoyed ceramics and traveling.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Caygle, Painesville, Ohio; and two sisters, Ruby Jersey, Ormond Beach, and Varnell Reed, Tupelo, Miss. Woodward, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Edward Landers
PALM COAST -- Edward G. Landers, 44, of Blyth Place, a dry wall finisher, died Saturday at home.
Mr. Landers was born in Williamstown, N.Y., and came here six years ago from Pulaski, N.Y.
Survivors include his wife, Michelle; a son, John, and two daughters, MaryJo Hoefer and Heather Morrison, all of Palm Coast; four sisters, Laura Pool, Tucson, Ariz., Jene Price, Central Square, N.Y., Mary Novak, Mexico, N.Y., and Sandy Mattner, Blossvale, N.Y.; two brothers, Bill, Flagler Beach, and Bernie, Hastings, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. Alderson's is in charge.

Alexander Macknowski
PORT ORANGE -- Alexander Macknowksi, 83, of Fox Hunt Court, who retired as a marine dispatcher for an oil company, died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Macknowksi, a merchant marine veteran of World War II, was born in Linden, N.J. He moved to this area in 1984 from South Amboy, N.J. He was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Helen; three sons, Raymond, South Brunswick, N.J., Donald, Richmond, Va., and Robert, South Amboy; a daughter, Linda Haesler, Irvine, Calif.; a brother, Steven, Jersey City; two sisters, Dorothy LaBosco, Hackensack, N.J., and Dale Nemits, Atkinson, N.H.; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Epiphany Catholic Church, 201 Lafayette St., Port Orange, FL 32127. Shannon is in charge.

Mary Mealy
PORT ORANGE -- Mary A. Mealy, 85, of Second Street, a resident since 1969, died Jan. 6 at her daughter's home in Palm Coast.
Mrs. Mealy was born in Marystown, New Foundland, and moved to this area from Staten Island, N.Y. She was a graduate of Memorial University-St. John's, New Foundland. Her memberships included: Epiphany Catholic Church, where she was a past president and a delegate of the Council of Catholic Women; Daytona Beach Business and Professional Women; and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282. Mrs. Mealy also was a past president of Columbiettes Assumption Council, Staten Island.
Survivors include two daughters, Maureen Rittenour, Palm Coast, and Peggy Coady, Daytona Beach Shores; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Cardwell & Maloney is in charge.

Dominic Menaguale
OSTEEN -- Dominic Menaguale, 71, of Blue Heron Boulevard, who retired after 20 years as the owner of Plastic Corp., Rochester, died Monday at Florida Hospital-South, Orlando.
Mr. Menaguale moved here 20 years ago from his birthplace, Fairport, N.Y. He was a member of Methodist Church of Osteen. Mr. Menaguale enjoyed fishing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Phyllis; two sons, Jerry, East Rochester, N.Y., and Jeff, Fairport; a daughter, Cindy Nichols, Oak Hill, Va.; two brothers, Tom, Cape Coral, and Paul, Fairport; a sister, Margaret, Fairport; and seven grandchildren. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Kathryn Nichols
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Kathryn M. Nichols, 54, of Fayetteville, who was born in Port Orange, died Monday at home from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Fayetteville in December.
Mrs. Nichols attended school in New Smyrna Beach and graduated from Seabreeze High School, Daytona Beach. She moved to Fayetteville from Atlanta. She was active in her church and in antiques dealing.
Survivors include two sons, Tony and Tommy Nichols, and a daughter, Susie Heinzel, all of Fayetteville; her father, John McLarty, Port Orange; a brother, Lynn McLarty, New Port Richey; and four grandchildren. Shannon, Port Orange, is in charge.

Leonard Nunez Jr.
DAYTONA BEACH -- Leonard Nunez Jr., 58, of Third Street, a resident since 1980, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital-Ormond Beach.
Mr. Nunez moved to this area from his birthplace, Los Angeles.
No known immediate local relatives survive. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Wilma Russell
SANFORD -- Wilma Louise Russell, 73, of Flamingo Drive, the mother of several area residents, died Monday at home.
Mrs. Russell, who retired as an assembler for Sprague Electronics in Longwood, moved here in 1958 from her native Washington, Ind.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Kenneth; thee sons, James, Orange City, Kenneth Jr., Sanford, John, Gurnee, Ill.; two daughters, Sherri Dorion, Deltona, and Linda Davis, Sanford; two brothers, Steven Fleetwood, California, and Kenneth Fleetwood, Cassia; two sisters, Helen Robbins, Indianapolis, and Bertha Emmons, Holiday; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Tri-County Cremation, Longwood, is in charge.

Ralph Smith
CRYSTAL SPRING, PA. -- Ralph F. Smith Jr., 69, a retired electrician for the Potomac Power and Electric Co., Washington D.C., died Tuesday while visit his daughter's home in Palm Coast.
Mr. Smith, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War who was awarded two Purple Hearts, was born in Washington D.C. In Pennsylvania, he volunteered as a firefighter and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps Association and the Knights of Columbus, where he attained the rank of 40th degree. Locally, he attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Carole; two sons, Michael, Crawfton, Md., and Robert, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Dale Savard, Palm Coast, and Catherine Insley, Upper Marlboro, Md.; a brother, Richard, Upper Marlboro; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 353666, Palm Coast, Fl 32135; or to St. John's Catholic Church, 161 E. First St., Everett, PA 15537. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Shirley Smoke
DELAND -- Shirley J. Smoke, 64, of Lake Drive, a secretary and bookkeeper for the Arnold Steel Co. in Lakewood, N.J., for 20 years, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.
Born in Farmingdale, N.J., Mrs. Smoke moved to this area in 1984 from Lakewood. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Donald; four daughters, Dawn English, DeLeon Springs, Penny Young, DeLand, Kim Reddy, Orange City, and Pam Howell, Fort Lauderdale; two brothers, James Green, Howell, N.J., and Art Green, Lakewood; six sisters, Marion Butcher, Farmingdale, Helen Edwards, Franklin, Dorothy Clapper, Barnegat, N.J., Betty Hahn, Toms River, N.J., Lillian Chalk, Hammonton, N.J., and Millie Mussi, Beaver, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Walter Sweet
HOLY HILL -- Walter H. Sweet, 79, of Ridgewood Avenue, formerly a claims manager for Seaboard Airline Railroad in Miami with 40 years of service, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital-Ormond Beach.
Born in Georgetown, Ky., Mr. Sweet moved to this area in 1997 from North Miami Beach. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach.
Survivors include two brothers, Louis, Ormond Beach, and Daniel, Jacksonville; and a sister, Georgia Calongne, Jacksonville.
