Mary Jo Bryson Barnes
Mary Jo Bryson Barnes, 82, of The Algonquin House in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully Dec. 28, 2009. She was a retired financial systems analyst for the Naval Supply Center. Born in Baldwyn, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Ervin Prather Bryson and Thaddeus James Bryson. Mary Jo was a member of Larchmont Baptist Church where she was a past president of her Sunday school class, and more recently attended Freemason Street Baptist Church with her daughter. She was a member of the Elizabeth River Woman's Club, and was a past president serving several terms for the Algonquin House Association. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Markie Cravedi and her husband Eddie of Norfolk; her son, Larry Rutherford and his wife Shelley of Coral Gables; three grandchildren, Bryson Maslow of Norfolk, Alison Rutherford Bracewell and her husband Ken of Fort Lauderdale, and Thaddeus Rutherford and his wife Courtney of Palmetto, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Coleman and Quinn Rutherford; and her faithful and loving companion, Faith Banks. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kristen H. Maslow. A funeral was conducted Dec. 31, in Freemason Street Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Joan Hickey Brown
Joan Hickey Brown, b.March 6, 1925, d. December 23, 2009. Predeceased by her parents Harry and Jeannette Heyward. Survived by her sister Jeanne Heyward, children Edwin W. Hickey (Lori), John H. (Jack) Hickey (Bjorg Eikeland), Joan W. Hickey and Jane Heupel, grandchildren Paige and Caitlin Hickey, children of Ed and Lori. Joan was born in Chicago and moved to Miami with her family in 1943. She graduated from the University of Miami where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Joan married
Weyman Hickey in 1950. Weyman passed away in 1973. She persevered through this loss and then married
Donald Brown in 1986. She and Don traveled the world together visiting such places as Ireland, Australia, all of Europe, Mexico, and China. They were members of the Spoonbill Dinner Club, the Beach Colony Club and were dedicated UM Baseball fans. Don passed in 2007. Joan always wanted to be on the go with her many friends. She was a founding member of the Coral Pines Garden Club in 1954. She was a volunteer at Fairchild Tropical Garden and Montgomery Botanical Center. She was a member of UM Friends of the Theater, the UM Women's Guild and played bridge weekly. Joan was an avid golfer and became a member of the Coral Gables Country Club Women's Golf Association in 1984. She served as Tournament Chair, Handicap Chair, and President. While battling cancer, Joan summoned her great strength and determination to travel to Switzerland to see her dear friend Christa Karle. Anthony Delano
Anthony J. Delano, age 81 Sratford, previously of Easton and Westpor, Conn., passed away Tuesday, December 22nd at Lord Chamberlain Health Care in Stratford. Mr. Delano was born May 18, 1928 in Westport. He is the son of the late Joseph and Carmela (Piemonte) Delano. Raised in Westport, Mr. Delano lived in Easton for 34 years and most recently resided in Stratford. After graduating from Staples High School in 1946, he was honored with an appointment to the USMA at West Point, where he received a Bachelor of Engineering degree and his Army commission in 1951. Upon graduation, Mr. Delano was assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Division and served in the Korean War through 1953 where he was awarded the Bronze star medal. After his discharge from the Army, he earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. Subsequently, Mr. Delano worked in the engineering profession, where he spent the majority of his career at Bolt Associates in Norwalk, from which he retired as vice president of Engineering in 1986. Mr. Delano remained very active in the West Point Association of Graduates, giving generously of his time and resources. He was a 37 year member of American Legion Post 0160, a longtime member of the Unitarian Church in Westport and belonged to the Connecticut Classic Arts organization in Trumbull. He will also be remembered as an avid gardener and voracious reader, with a renowned passion for art.Survivors include his wife, Patricia Monchamp Delano of Stratford; one brother, William Delano of Westport; two sisters, Mary Delano of Coral Gables; Ann Carissimi of Fairfield; brother-in-law, Vincent Caris-simi; and three nephews, Louis, Vincent and John Carissimi. Mr. Delano was also predeceased by one sister, Rachel Newman. A memorial service will be announced in the future. Charles Daniel Gunther
Charles Daniel Gunther, 84, died Dec. 23, 2009, at his home. He was born in New York and lived in Sebastian, Fla. for six years, coming from Jasper. He retired as a lieutenant from the Coral Gables Police Department. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He was a member of the Fellsmere Historical Church, Florida Fraternal Order of Police and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his son, Charles D. Gunther Jr of Spring City, Tenn.; daughter, Donna Burtrem of Sebastian; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ebbie Ball Provenzano. Virginia Moody Hagan
Virginia Moody Hagan, writer, musician and teacher, age 96, died peacefully in her sleep on January 2 at Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas. Mrs. Hagan was born April 10, 1913 in Temple to Garland L. and Beatrice Hagenlocher Moody. She attended Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana schools. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Music from the University of Texas in Austin and completed coursework there for a master's in English. She also studied music at Louisiana State University. She lived in Dallas from the 1930s until her marriage in 1942, and from 1942-1979 lived in Silver Spring, Maryland, Coral Gables and Bethesda, Maryland. She has lived in Austin since her husband's retirement in 1979. While teaching in the Dallas demonstration school, Mrs. Hagan wrote the lyrics to "Dallas Today, " the Dallas Centennial Hymn, which was performed by schoolchildren citywide and on national radio. She was a gifted pianist and composer. Mrs. Hagan won national awards in poetry and journalism. Her poetry and feature articles were published in many magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, Modern Bride, and Think, and many newspapers, including the Washington Post, Washington Evening Star, Dallas Morning News, and Dallas Times Herald. Her poetry was reprinted in Hallmark and other books and magazines. Her Easter story, "Pufftail and the Rainbow, " originally published in Canada, was translated and appeared in Luxembourg's Red Cross Magazine. A sonnet published in Holy Name Journal was read by Thomas Merton and displayed by the Superior General in Trappist, Kentucky. Mrs. Hagan was named Poet Laureate of the Bell County Federation of Women's Clubs in 1938. She twice won the McDougal Cup in Miami. She was Creative Arts Chairman of the American Association of University Women and State Secretary of the Poetry Society of Texas. She was a member of the Dallas Woman's Club, Miami Pen Women, the National League of American Pen Women, the Poetry Society of Colorado, and the Poetry Society of Texas. Since 1941, she has been a member of P.E.O., a philanthropic and educational organization, most recently Chapter AZ Austin. While at UT Austin she was president of the Newman Club. Mrs. Hagan acted in amateur theater. She was a substitute teacher in private schools and a math, remedial reading, and college preparatory tutor. She was a boy scout den mother, volunteered at schools, and shared her poetry and musical talents at retirement homes. In 2008-2009, Mrs. Hagan did poetry readings at Hill Elementary and was elected to the resident council at Brighton Gardens. Survivors include son Michael Garland Hagan and his wife Maureen of Keller, Texas, daughter Virginia Margaret Hagan of White Plains, New York, and daughter Elizabeth Hagan Drews and her husband Jack of Austin; six grandchildren, Christopher, Jeanne, Thomas, James, Matthew and Katie; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan Christopher and Noelle. Mrs. Hagan was preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 61 years, Thomas William Hagan, Sr., her son Thomas William Hagan, Jr., and her only sibling, her brother Garland, who died in early childhood. Mrs. Hagan was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. She was a devout Catholic all her life who also cherished her Baptist, Methodist and Lutheran family roots. She once said, "I tossed a pebble into the pond. I pray its circles reach out to all of the dear people who thirst for love." The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Brighton Gardens, Seton Hospital, and Saint Louis and Saint Theresa Catholic Churches for their years of loving care to Mrs. Hagan. Visitation was January 5 at Weed- Corley-Fish at 3125 North Lamar. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road at 11:00 a.m. January 6, 2010. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 South IH 35. If desired, a donation may be made in Mrs. Hagan's name to St. Louis Catholic Church.
Franklin Judson Hill
F. Judson Hill, "Jud, " United States Navy retired, joined the Church Triumphant on Dec. 21, 2009. Born May 28, 1930, in Coral Gables, he was the son of the late A. Judson and Winifred Bush Hill of Miami. A graduate of Ponce de Leon High School in Coral Gables, Jud attended the University of Florida and the University of Miami and was a Golden Legion member of Phi Delta Theta. He graduated from the Naval Aviation Flight Training Program in Pensacola and enjoyed a career as a Navy fighter pilot. He served his country in the Korean War, the Cuban conflict, and the Vietnam War. After retirement, he established himself as a Realtor with Professional Realty and later with William E. Wood and Associates. When he retired again, he became a docent at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, doing re- enactments as a Confederate Naval captain and later serving as a guide on the USS Wisconsin. He was a lifelong hunter, fisherman, and consummate outdoorsman and took great joy in sharing those pleasures with his sons and grandsons. A member of the Nandua Hunt Club, he enjoyed many good times with his "Doghouse" cohorts. He was a member and ordained elder at King's Grant Presbyterian Church and a Stephen Minister. Jud is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ellen A. Hill; his sons and their wives, Scott G. and Yvonne Hill of Kennesaw, Ga., and Morgan D. and Holly Hill of Woodstock, Ga.; and two grandsons, Ryan H. Hill and Geoffrey W. Hill of Kennesaw. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Julia Wilson (Gene) of Virginia Beach; brother-in-law, David Anderson of Chesapeake; sister-in- law, Ivy Hill Kool of Florida; many cherished nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Geoffrey H. Hill. The family offers their thanks to the staffs of Virginia Oncology and of the MISU unit of Sentara Leigh Hospital. Ianthe M. Babe Horton
Ianthe M. Babe Horton, resident of Coral Gables since 1975, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2009, at the age of 97. She was born in Syracuse, New York on July 26, 1912, into the prominent Eckel Family. She earned a degree in elementary education and taught school for 9 years prior to her marriage to Paul R. Horton in 1941. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when the nurses were sent to the front lines to care for the troops, she volunteered as a nurses' aide at St. Joseph Hospital. Babe shared a wonderful, happy life with Paul, her husband of 36 years, who predeceased her in 1977. Her family and friends will remember her lovingly as an avid reader and bridge player, a caring, kind Mother, Grandmother, great-grandmother, trusting friend, patient listener, and elegantly dressed to the nines at all times. She was a member of the Coral Gables Country Club as well as an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and Student Center from its early days where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. In the last years of her life she was lovingly attended and cared for by Verona Khani and Pauline Thoywell-Henry, to whom the family will always be grateful. She is survived by her two children, Robert P. Horton and Kathleen Basáñez, two grandchildren, Michelle (Carlos) Casanova of Cape Coral, Florida, and Robert (Jacqueline) Basáñez of Arlington, Virginia, and two great-grandsons, Kevin and Patrick Casanova. A Mass in celebration of her life was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Student Center in Coral Gables on January 2. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Syracuse, New York in the Spring. Bernardo Jorge
Bernardo Jorge, 64, of Route 89, Concord Township, Corry, PA, died on January 1 at his residence. He was born in Quebec, Canada on October 30, 1945, a son of Josephina Connolly Jorge of Coral Gables and the late Ceve Jorge. Mr. Jorge was raised and educated in Coral Gables where he graduated from Coral Gables High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam from 1963 until 1969. He was a vegetable farmer in Homestead, FL, mainly producing avocados and sweet potatoes. In 1981, he joined Florida Power & Light Co. at Turkey Point in Florida City, FL until he recently became ill. He was an avid reader and enjoyed boating on the sea, and also shooting the bull with his friends. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sandra Lawrence of Corry, PA, whom he married
in December of 1992 in Homestead, FL. He is also survived by two sons, Dr. Allen Jorge and his wife, Allison, of Miami, FL and Bernardo Jorge and his wife, Tracie, of Chicago, IL, two step daughters, Connie Swegles and her husband, Charles, of Corry, PA and Roberta Kent and her husband, Rick, of Concord Township, PA, and by a step son, Kenneth Fenno of Red Oak, OK. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Franseca Jorge and three grandsons, Alex, A J and Andrew Jorge. No visitation or funeral service will be held. Madeleine Lovejoy
Madeleine Lovejoy, 74, died Jan. 2, 2010, at Androscoggin Valley Hospital, surrounded by all of her children and many family members. She was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on Sept. 11, 1935, to George E. and Delina L. (Duchesnaye) Riendeau. She lived most of her life in Berlin, however she did live in Massachusetts for a period of time where she trained and opened her home to foster children, often having 5 to 7 children in her home at one time. She continued with foster care after moving back to Milan. She cared for more than 85 foster children in her lifetime. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was a very loving, caring and devoted, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as foster mother. She enjoyed music, especially French Canadian music. She loved to dance and travel. Cancun was absolutely her favorite vacation place. As a young woman she enjoyed camping and hunting. Family members include three sons, Maurice Croteau, Donald Croteau and Paul Croteau, of Berlin; one daughter; Diane (Croteau) Smith of Reno, Nev.; one stepson, Stephen Lovejoy of Coral Gables; one stepdaughter, Patricia Mary Lovejoy of Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, George Riendeau Jr. of Berlin; three sisters, Cecile Labbe and Lena Martin, both of Vista, Calif., and Anita Chateauneuf of Berlin; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two husbands, Rosario Croteau and Charles Lovejoy, as well as one grandson Albert "Babe" Turmel Jr.
Russell McGraw Jr.
Russell Jeffries McGraw, Jr. January 1931 - January 2010 Resident of Atlanta After a courageous 12 year battle with Alzheimer's, Russell passed away peacefully at Fountain View Center. Russell was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Coral Gables. He graduated from St. Theresa High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Miami in 1955. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force ROTC and active duty between 1946 and 1951. He was one of four children born to the late Russell Jeffries McGraw, Sr., M.D. and Alice Elizabeth Collins. He was the beloved husband of Janet Ruth Goller for over 50 years. Russell is survived by his loving sister Noreen Manella and joins his sisters Joan Crooks and Mary Kathryn McGraw in his final resting. He will forever be remembered by his daughters Theresa Anne Janssen, Jeanne Marie Garalis, Mary Kathryn Mink and Alice Elizabeth Goff, treasured grandchildren Brittany Ann and Charlie Scott Garalis, Cassidy Joan Mink and Molly Grace Goff, caring son in-laws Charles Garalis and Jonathan Goff, along with countless other friends and family who were blessed to know him. Russell loved spending time with his family and having fun with his many friends. He was a member of the Coral Gables Country Club Little Theater Group and the IHM Little Theater Group. His favorite pastimes included acting, golfing, and watching football. He loved making people laugh and always had a good story or anecdote. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church since 1971 where he served as an usher for over 20 years, was an active member of RCIA for several years and served on various committees during his active membership at Immaculate Heart of Mary. He spent most of his career as an entrepreneur working as an independent insurance broker, but his most rewarding business venture was providing non-medical emergency transportation to the elderly and disabled. Russell touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humour all the way to the end. A private memorial service and interment will be held on Friday, January 8th, 2010 at Our Lady-Mercy Catholic Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th Street, Doral, FL 33172. J. Dudley Moylan
J. Dudley Dudley died on December 25, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He was born August 8, 1921, in Albany, New York, moving with his family to Miami in the 1930s. After graduating from Duke University in 1943, Dudley joined the U.S. Navy, and served as an officer on a destroyer, the Samuel B. Roberts, in the Pacific theater of WW II. On October 25, 1944, his ship was sunk during a heroic attack on the Japanese fleet during the battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the largest naval battles in history. Dudley and other survivors floated for 50 hours in shark-infested waters before being rescued. Dudley lived in St. Louis Park for almost 60 years, and was a charter member of the St. Louis Park Housing Authority, serving on that and other city committees for many years. He taught English at the University of Minnesota in the 1950's and was active in local and national organizations benefiting Duke University, World War II survivors, Kiwanis, The Nature Conservancy, and St. Louis Park Historical Society. Dudley delighted in meeting and knowing young people, and he will be remembered and missed by countless friends, both young and old, whom he has known over the years. He is survived by a brother, Ted Moylan (Lena); nephews, Edward and Clinton, all of Coral Gables, Florida, and niece, Molly Perkins, Monticello, Florida. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, 519 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis, 55403, on Tuesday, January 12, at 4 p.m., followed by a gathering at McCoy's Restaurant, 3801 Grand Way, St. Louis Park. Dudley will be buried in his beloved Adirondacks where he spent most of his summers. Memorials may be sent to St. Mark's Organ Renovation Fund or to donor's choice.
John Henry Pfaeffli
John Henry Pfaeffli (JP, Chief), age 87, of Allentown, PA, died December 23, 2009 in Lehigh Valley Hospice, Allentown, Penn. John was born October 20, 1922 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Emma Pfaeffli, immigrants from Switzerland. After attending the University of Wisconsin, John proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper in the Pacific. In 1959 to 1978, John was the owner/operator of Watsons restaurant 9th and Ocean Avenue in Ocean City, New Jersey. During this time, he touched the lives of all that passed through those doors. During the off season, John resided in Coral Gables. He had a love for sports and became involved with Westminster Christian High School athletic boosters. His fund raising efforts led the school to name the football field in his honor. He also developed a passion for golf that lasted into retirement. John we are forever grateful for all that you have done - Father, Friend, Chief. We will always remember the way you lived your life and the principles by which you lived - faith, integrity and kindness. You will be missed. Sandra S. Lee Pierce, 58, of Valdosta, died Dec. 23, 2009, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on June 9, 1951, in Coral Gables. Mrs. Pierce was a member of the Catholic faith.She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Thomas Wilton Pierce of Valdosta; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Jimmy Simmons of Orlando, Tommy Pierce Jr. of Ocala, Charles and Carrie Pierce of Lake Park; eight grandchildren, Cassandra Simmons, David Pierce, Lea Pierce, Justin Pierce, Casey Waters, Chasity Pierce, Casin Pierce and Carly Pierce; her father, Charles Pennock of Davie, Fla.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Bobby and Jan Pennock of Davie, Leroy Pennock of Miami; one sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Bill Richardson of Cooper City, Fla. Muriel Rosen
Miami Jewish Health Systems deeply mourns the loss of FOUNDER and Gift of the Heart member Muriel Rosen. Muriel and her late, beloved husband, Arnold, also a FOUNDER, were generous, long-time supporters of MJHS. She passed away on December 12, 2009 at the age of 86. Muriel graduated from the University of Miami and married
Arnold in 1944. When he left the Navy, they moved to Coral Gables. Throughout their lives, they were involved with and supportive of various arts organizations. The Appalachian State University Rosen Concert Hall is named in their honor. The Rosens were longtime members of Temple Israel of Greater Miami, where Arnold served as president. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. Muriel will be greatly missed by MJHS and the Jewish community. Signed: Stephen H. Dealia "Chris" Buffington
DAYTONA BEACH - Dealia Christine "Chris" Buffington, 73, of Killion Street, a resident since 1954, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.
Mrs. Buffington was born in Mobile, Ala., and came to this area from Chattanooga, Tenn. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed needlepointing and gardening.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Middleton; a son, Raymond, and a daughter, Janice Marino, both of Daytona Beach; a brother, Nollie Thompson, and three sisters, Annette, Gussie and Lorraine, all of Grand Bay, Ala.; and two grandchildren. Ormond Funeral Home is in charge.
Kathleen Bulman
DAYTONA BEACH SHORES - Kathleen A. Bulman, 89, of South Atlantic Avenue, a native of County Mayo, Ireland, died Saturday at her daughter's home .
Mrs. Bulman, a homemaker, came to this area in 1970 from Hyattsville, Md. She was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church.

DEBARY -- Edward J. Atkinson Jr., 37, of Monroe Avenue, a site manager for General Electric Clinical Services, died Tuesday as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on U.S. 17.
Mr. Atkinson was born in Scranton, Pa., and moved to this area in 1991 from Salisbury, Md. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Bible Church, Deltona. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Kim; and three daughters, Nicole, Rachel, and Milena, all of DeBary. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.
Mary Augustine
DAYTONA BEACH -- Mary K. Augustine, 83, of North Halifax Avenue, a resident since 1956, died Wednesday at home.
Mrs. Augustine, a homemaker, was born in Tampa and came to this area from Charleston, S.C. She was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church; the church's Philoptochos Society, of which she was a past president; the Daughters of Penelope; Order of Eastern Star; and Ladies of the Shrine.
Survivors include a son, Stacy, Daytona Beach; three daughters, Becky Theos, Ormond Beach, and Joyce Louizes and Joanne Augustine, both of Daytona Beach; a brother, Nick Klonaris; and three sisters, Lula Creticos, Kally Poulos and Margaret Cheros; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. PALM COAST -- Sally Ann DeRose, 53, of Blyth Place, an office manager for Pools and Spas of Central Florida, died Saturday at home.
Mrs. DeRose was born in New York City, and moved to Palm Coast 10 years ago from Oradell, N.J.
