Alice Mae Sybrant Hamilton
STARKE -- Alice Mae Sybrant Hamilton of Starke died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Hamilton was born in Townville, Pa., and moved to Starke 26 years ago from Homestead. She was a homemaker, a retired cook at the Homestead Air Force Base, and a member of First Baptist Church of Starke and the Bradford County Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Rama Ormsbee and Rita Frey of Starke and Ruth Pence of Ridgefield, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Doris Swan of Jonesboro, Ga.; three sons, Raymond Hamilton of Corry, Pa., Ronald Hamilton of Columbus, Pa., and Richard Hamilton of Keystone Heights; four sisters, Orma Peters of McKene, Pa., and Carol Drake, Winifred Hamilton and Marjorie Smith, all of Townville; 39 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Robert Leo Meagher Sr.
Robert Leo Meagher Sr. of Gainesville died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 69.
Mr. Meagher was born in Rochester, N.Y., and moved to Gainesville from Camp Hill, Pa., in 1996. He retired from Consolidated Rail Corp. and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Meagher was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Rosalie Meagher. Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Meagher Jr. of Gainesville, Randall Lane Meagher of Lemoyne, Pa., and Richard Lee Meagher of Sarasota; a sister, Betty Murrell of Rochester; three brothers, Richard Meagher of Rochester, William Meagher of Ocala and Frank Meagher of Venice; and two grandchildren.
William James Murphy
CROSS CITY -- William James Murphy of Cross City died Saturday in Cross City. He was 77.
Mr. Murphy was born in Turner, Mont., and moved to Cross City from Homosassa 13 years ago. He was a schoolteacher, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a Methodist.
Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by a sister, Freda Hewitt, and a brother, Loren Murphy. Survivors include his wife, Martha Murphy of Cross City; three sons, Michael King Murphy of Irvine, Calif., Timothy James Murphy of Sebring and Ray Wheeler Jr. of Fort Meade; two daughters, Patricia Dee Baker of Balboa, Calif., and Cindy Copeland of Homosassa Springs; a sister, Marie Deal of Murray, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Evelyne Sterrett
Evelyne Sterrett of Gainesville died Friday at Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 76.
Mrs. Sterrett was born in Nashville, Tenn., and moved to Gainesville from Orlando five years ago. She was executive secretary and treasurer for the Florida Bankers Association. She was a Methodist.
Survivors include two nieces, Beverly Noll of Gainesville and Bettye Harris of Manassas, Va.; and a brother-in-law, Charles S. Baxter of Gainesville.
Catherine Stewart
Catherine Stewart of Gainesville died Thursday in her home following a lengthy illness. She was 87.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Fort Lauderdale. She was a homemaker, a foster grandparent at Tacachale and a member of Emanuel Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board.
Survivors include her caregiver, Bertha White of Gainesville; two stepchildren, James Stewart Jr. and Irene Martin, both of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.
Vivian Mae Westcott
WILLISTON -- Vivian Mae Westcott of Williston died Friday at Oaks Residential and Rehab Center in Gainesville after a long illness. She was 97.
Mrs. Westcott was a retired nurse. She was born in Bristol, Ind., lived in Glendale, Calif., for more than 50 years, and moved from Dunnellon to Williston seven years ago. Mrs. Westcott graduated from Lutheran Memorial School in Chicago. She was a Protestant.
Survivors include two caregivers, Mary K. Spearing of Dunnellon and Victor Johnson of Williston.
Irma Grant Broome
EARLETON -- Irma Grant Broome of Earleton died Friday at Shands at AGH in Gainesville after a short illness. She was 95.
Mrs. Broome was a homemaker and a former employee of Florida Pest Control, Stephen Foster Elementary School and the Florida Farm Colony, now part of Tacachale.
Born in Conway, N.C., she lived in Gainesville for 44 years before moving to Earleton one year ago. She attended business school in Orlando.
She was a member of North Central Baptist Church in Gainesville.
Mrs. Broome enjoyed fishing, crocheting and growing flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Harry Broome.
Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor B. Humphries of Earleton; and her caregivers, Martha Short of Lake Butler and Carol Calvert of Waldo.
Iva Colson Douglas
BROOKER -- Iva Colson Douglas of Brooker died Saturday at the Windsor Manor Care Center in Starke after a long illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Douglas was a homemaker and a member of Brooker Baptist Church.
She was a lifelong resident of Brooker.
Mrs. Douglas was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny K. Douglas; and a son, Carl E. Douglas.
Survivors include three sons, Howard Douglas, Ernest M. Douglas and Lowell Douglas, all of Brooker; a sister, Virginia Bielling of Lake Butler; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Earl L. Myrick
FOWLER BLUFF -- Earl L. "Vern" Myrick of Fowler Bluff died Friday at his home after a long illness. He was 66.
Mr. Myrick was a vice-president of claims at National Standard Life Insurance Co. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Born in Ellenton, he moved from Orlando to Fowler Bluff 11 years ago, where he built his home of Sable palm logs. He was a graduate of Manatee High School.
He was a member of Fowler Bluff Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Life Underwriters Association. He was treasurer of the Fowler Bluff Volunteer Fire Department, and he started the Chiefland Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Myrick of Fowler Bluff; four daughters, Cydneycq Young of Gainesville, Judy Wright of Hawthorne, Kathryn Gankoscq of Oviedo and Mickycq Myrick of Casselberry; his mother, Hilda Myrick of Palmetto; a sister, H. Marguerite Winfreecq of Bradenton; a brother, Sidneycq M. Myrick Jr. of Wewahitchka; and seven grandchildren.
Delphia B. Nogosky
FORT WHITE -- Delphia B. Nogosky of Fort White died Thursday at her home after a long illness. She was 78.
Mrs. Nogosky was a retired nurse.
Born in Penson Fork, Ky., she moved from Orlando to Fort White 21 years ago.
She was a Catholic.
Mrs. Nogosky enjoyed painting and writing poetry.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Nogosky of Destin and Edward Nogosky of Fort White; a sister, Maxine Nogosky of Orlando; and one granddaughter.
Ethel Hazel Walker
TRENTON -- Ethel Hazel Walker of Trenton died Friday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Trenton. She was 85.
Mrs. Walker was a former cottage parent at Sunland Training Center, now part of Tacachale.
Born in Suwannee County, she lived in Bell most of her life before moving to Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Trenton 12 years ago.
Mrs. Walker was a member of Bethel Church of Christ in Bell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Royce Walker; and a daughter, Beverly Angela Cannon.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Bell of Melrose; a sister, Grace Sanchez of Branford; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Iris J. Crews
WORTHINGTON SPRINGS -- Iris J. "Aunt Arrie" Crews of Worthington Springs died Sunday morning in the Brookwood Care Center in Starke following a long illness. She was 90.
Mrs. Crews was born in Jonesville, S.C., and lived most of her life in Jacksonville. She moved to Worthington Springs in 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Crews was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Crews. Survivors include one sister, Annie Belle Mathis of Bradenton, and her niece and caretaker, Mary Elixson.
Chester Jenkins
LIVE OAK -- Chester Jenkins of Live Oak died Sunday in Shands at Live Oak following a short illness. He was 87.
Mr. Jenkins was a Suwannee County native, farmer and rancher. He loved horses and dogs, was a member of Hayward Masonic Lodge 45 for more than 50 years and the Woodman of the World, was a supporter of the Florida Sheriff's Boys Ranch and was a 50-year member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Lou Sullivan, and her husband, Joe; a son, Lamar Jenkins, and his wife, Hazel; one sister, Alene Walker of Jacksonville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Harold Raley
Harold Raley of Gainesville died Sunday in Gainesville. He was 69.
Mr. Raley was born in Water Valley, Miss., and moved to Gainesville from Vero Beach in 1978. He was a retired store manager for Publix Supermarkets, for whom he worked for 32 years. Mr. Raley volunteered with the American Red Cross, the Masons and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Mr. Raley was preceded in death by his wife, wife, Bessie Chesser Raley. Survivors include two sons, Lamar Raley of Nashville, Tenn., and Brian Raley of Atlanta; a sister, Flora Mae Mills of Water Valley; four brothers, James Raley of Memphis, Tenn., Roy Raley of Eustis, Tom Raley of Tallahassee and David Raley of Water Valley; and one granddaughter, Christina Raley of Palm Coast.
Charles James Schaefer
STARKE -- Charles James Schaefer of Starke died Sunday in Shands at Starke following a long illness. He was 72.
Mr. Schaefer was born in New York and moved to Starke in 1946. He retired from the Florida National Guard with more than 33 years of service and was an Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees. Mr. Schaefer was a member of Starke American Legion Post 56, the Starke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1016 and the Honor Society of the American Legion in Jacksonville. Mr. Schaefer was a Starke city commissioner from 1972 to 1989 and was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Kersey Schaefer of Starke; one daughter, Nora Tabah of Lake Butler; one sons, Charles J. "Chuck" Schaefer Jr. of Starke; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
