Dorothea Jones Herbert of Gainesville died Saturday in Gainesville. She was 94.
Mrs. Herbert was born in Niles, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville from Naples in 1974. She was a homemaker and a graduate of Ohio University in Athens.
She served on the Athens City School Board for many years, received a 50-year recognition from the American Association of University Women and was active in the Ohio University Chi Omega Alumnae Association.
Mrs. Herbert was also active in the Naples Republican Women's Federation and founded the Gainesville Republican Women's Federation. She served on the Republican Executive Committee in Gainesville and was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Herbert was preceded in death by her husband, William Herbert.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Smith and Connie Selby, both of Gainesville; nine grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren.

Sidney Matthew Matthews
OLD TOWN -- Sidney Matthew Matthews of Old Town died Friday after a long illness. He was 74.
Mr. Matthews was a retired truck driver and a member of the Teamsters for 42 years. He was a member of McCalls Chapel Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred A. Matthews of Old Town; three sons, Mike L. Matthews of Orlando, Sidney Matthews Jr. and Mack Matthews, both of Jacksonville; three brothers, Leon R. McCallum of Old Town, John McCallum of Gainesville and Stanley McCallum; three sisters, Jany Johnson of Ponte Vedra Beach, Selma Lou Klinko of Mayo and Catherine Brent of Tampa; and five grandchildren.
Major Thomas
PARRISH -- Major Thomas of Parrish died Saturday in Gainesville. He was 70.
Mr. Thomas was born in Gainesville and was a resident there for most of his life. He was a farmer and rancher, and he was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia M. Thomas of Parrish; two daughters, Gayla Eiland of Gainesville and Leslee Mimbs of Palmetto; one son, Billy Thomas of Parrish; one stepson, Dan Delany of Hastings; one brother, N.T. Thomas Jr. of Gainesville; two sisters, Margaret Rivers and Maude Tanner, both of Gainesville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Helen Moore Burris
LAKE CITY -- Helen Moore Burris died Saturday in the Health Center of Lake City. She was 89.
Mrs. Burris was born in West Point, Miss., and moved to Lake City 50 years ago. She was a Cub Scout den mother, co-founder of the auxiliary at Lake Shore Hospital, a circle leader at First United Methodist Church in Lake City, a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Lake City, an avid bridge player and a lover of needlepoint and antiques.
Survivors include her husband, James A. "Jack" Burris; two sons, C. Marvin Burris of Lake City and Jack M. Burris of Atlanta; two stepchildren, James L. Burris and Thalia Ann Powell, both of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.

Regina Bylaaska Darby
Regina Bylaaska "Jean" Darby of Gainesville died Friday at Lake City Medical Center after an extended illness. She was 96.
Mrs. Darby was born in Fort Myers and moved to Gainesville in 1983 from Starke, where she was a longtime resident. Mrs. Darby was a homemaker and a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include four nieces, Frances Ward of Lake City, Virginia Johns of Starke, Phyllis Nobles of Jacksonville and Marjorie Marks of DeLand; three nephews, Jimmy Peek of Starke, Mike Darby of Orange Park and Darby Peek of Lake City; and sister-in-law Virginia Darby of Starke.

Alice J. Erfurt
Alice J. Erfurt died Sunday at the Hospice House Care Center after a long illness. She was 83.
Mrs. Erfurt was born in Danville, Vt., and moved to Gainesville in 1958 from Nassau, N.Y. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was Catholic.
Mrs. Erfurt was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Erfurt, and a stepson, George Erfurt.
Survivors include a son, Herb Erfurt of Gainesville; four daughters, Anna Steadman and Joanne Ashford, both of Gainesville, Mary Anne Oliver of Hop Bottom, Pa., and Diane Godreau of Maryland; one stepson, Harold Erfurt of Holly Hill; one stepdaughter, Charlotte Martin of West Lebanon, N.Y.; one sister, Marion Leslie of Chittenango, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Ruby Lucille Sapp Moody
Ruby Lucille Sapp Moody died Sunday in her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Moody was born in Newberry and was a lifelong resident of Alachua County. Her family came to Alachua County in the early 1830s. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Moody was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph R. Moody, and a son, Raymond Arden Moody.
Survivors include two daughters, Eva Jo Studstill of Fowlers Bluff and Nancy Slaughter of Dunnellon; two sons, Ronald "Pete" Squires and Lynn Moody, both of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Sally Borders
Sally Borders, a longtime resident of Gainesville, died Thursday in Gainesville. She was 80.
Mrs. Borders was a retired nursing assistant and a member of Eden Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Kolb and Judy Salah, both of Gainesville; four sisters, Polly Prater of Sheffield, Ala., Doris Mazakies of Eldorado, Ill., Louise McMinn of Milan, Tenn., and Flora Haley of Martinsville, Va.; three brothers, Woodrow Sweeney of Milan, James Sweeney of Crown Point, Ind., and Earl Sweeney of Martinsville; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Gretchen Feldstein
Gretchen Feldstein of Gainesville died Monday. She was 87.
Mrs. Feldstein was a nationally rated bridge player and one of the first women to achieve the rank of life master, one of the top ranks in bridge.
Survivors, all of Gainesville, include her husband, Harold Feldstein; a son, Josh Feldstein; a grandson, Mischa Feldstein; and a sister, Dolly McCarthy.
Marjorie L. Smith Haddock
PALATKA -- Marjorie L. Smith Haddock of Palatka died Sunday at her residence following a long illness. She was 65.
She was born and raised in Palatka and was Baptist. She was formerly employed by the Circle R Restaurant in Hawthorne and worked in home health care. She enjoyed flower arranging, quilting and crafts.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane and Bill Billings of Gainesville, Cheryl Jernigan of Alachua, and Pam and Earl Clemons of Gainesville; her father, Ira S. Smith of Palatka; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Doris and Bern Wells of New Braunfels, Texas, Iris Waldock of Interlachen and Rose E. Sweat of Palatka; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Bruce Pollock
Dr. Bruce Pollock of Gainesville died Sunday at his home. He was 45.
He was a family physician in Lake Butler, Starke and Keystone Heights. He was also a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida and was a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
He was selected by fellow physicians as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in 1995.
Dr. Pollock was born in Trenton, N.J., and moved to Gainesville 15 years ago from Summit, N.J. He graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in biological science and graduated from medical school at the University of Miami. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
He enjoyed traveling, photography, skiing and sailing.
Survivors include his wife, Jeannine Brady of Gainesville; a son, Daniel Pollock; his mother, Bernice Pollock of Trenton; a brother, Lawrence Pollock of Estes Park, Colo.; and a sister, Nancy Johnson of Fort Collins, Colo.
Twyla M. Shaffer
LIVE OAK -- Twyla M. Shaffer of Live Oak died Saturday in Live Oak. She was 79.
Mrs. Shaffer was a native of Denver and lived in California before moving to Live Oak.
She was the co-owner of a construction company and a member of the Christian Scientist Church.
She cooked for the Friends of the Library and served as treasurer of the Suwannee County Humane Society for many years.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lexie and Dale Soles of Live Oak.

Violet D. Thornton
OTTER CREEK -- Violet D. Thornton, a lifelong resident of Otter Creek, died Thursday in Macclenny. She was 78.
Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Collier of Jacksonville, Virginia Powell of St. George, Ga., and Annie Mae Curry of Otter Creek; a son, Jackson H. Prevatt of Enid, Okla.; a sister, June Deas of Seattle; a brother, Wilbur A. Deas of Callahan; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Lewis Trotter
LIVE OAK -- Lewis Trotter died Saturday at his residence in Live Oak. He was 75.
The Largo native retired from Florida Power, where he worked for 37 years as a senior engineer. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and the Seminole United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Trotter of Live Oak; two daughters, Jennifer Long of Old Town and Mary Pat Schallert of Largo; two sons, Lewis Trotter of Live Oak and Charles R. Trotter of Largo; two sisters, Lilla Mae Tillinghast and Nina Moore, both of Live Oak; two brothers, Sam Trotter and Warren Trotter, both of Largo; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
