Evelyn P. Salter
Evelyn P. Salter of Gainesville died Thursday in Gainesville. She was 80.
The South Carolina native moved to Gainesville from Jacksonville in 1959.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where she served on the Women's Circle. She was also a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, William E. Salter Sr. of Gainesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Helen Salter Jr. of Crystal River and David and Vicki Salter of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Helen Yvonne Wagner
Helen Yvonne Wagner of Fort Lauderdale died Wednesday at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 73.
The Missouri native was a secretary and a Lutheran.
Local survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Oscar Araujo of Gainesville.
Alfred Cleveland Weed Jr.
LAKE CITY -- Alfred Cleveland Weed Jr. of Lake City died Wednesday at Avalon Health Care Center in Lake City. He was 86.
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Mr. Weed moved to Lake City from Gainesville last year.
He was an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
He graduated from Purdue and Northwestern universities.
Mr. Weed served in the Merchant Marines and then as a lieutenant in the Signal Corps in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Maria Weed of Lake City; two daughters, Nancy Weed Taylor of Lake City and Betty Weed of Austin, Texas; a son, Robert Weed of Huntsville, Ala.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Leland Morelle Brown
WILLISTON -- Leland Morelle Brown, a lifelong resident of Williston, died Sunday in an automobile accident in Levy County. He was 20.
Mr. Brown was a laborer and a Baptist.
Survivors include his parents, Mildred Graves and James Carl Brown Sr. of Williston; his grandmother, Lillie Mae Graves of Williston; four stepsisters, Terriceda Rose of Archer and Patricia Joshua, Sandra Joshua and Bertha Gates, all of Williston; six brothers, Eugene Brown and James C. Brown Jr., both of Gainesville, Greg Brown of Virginia, Leon Brown of Lakeland, Warren Brown of Archer and Maurice Baker of Williston; and a stepbrother, Gerald Hayes Sr. of Gainesville.
Carl Everett Carroll
STEINHATCHEE -- Carl Everett Carroll of Steinhatchee died Tuesday in Cross City following an extended illness. He was 88.
Mr. Carroll moved to Steinhatchee from Miami 22 years ago. He was a member and deacon of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Steinhatchee.
He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lucille Carroll of Steinhatchee; two daughters, Marilyn Norman of Lawtey and Doris Hardison of Miami; three sons, Carl E. Carroll and Kenneth E. Carroll, both of Steinhatchee, and James E. Carroll of Gibsonville, N.C.; two sisters, Lillian Carroll of Washington and Pearl Cummins of Miami; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great- grandchild.
Maude Cudjo
Maude Cudjo, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Tuesday at Shands at AGH following a brief illness. She was 91.
Mrs. Cudjo was a homemaker and a member of the Old Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ada Gainey of Gainesville; two sons, Charles Cudjo and Mack Cudjo, both of Birmingham, Ala.; a stepson, Johnny Cudjo of Williston; a sister, Mary Dell of Alachua; a brother, John McNeal of Alachua; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
William E. Georgius
William E. Georgius died Monday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 87.
A native of Baltimore, Mr. Georgius lived in Tampa for 55 years before moving to Gainesville in 1999.
He was a jazz musician in the 1930s and was employed by Industrial Supply in Tampa for 35 years.
He served in the 2nd Bombardment Group in the North African Theater during World War II as a B-17 ball turret gunner and flew more than 50 missions.
He was awarded a Purple Heart and an Air Medal with one silver and four bronze oak leaf clusters.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Oliva Georgius of Gainesville; two daughters, Kathleen Farina of Chicago and Libby Smith of Gainesville; a sister, Josephine Thompson of Mechanicsville, Md.; and four grandchildren.
Nell Loretta Hart Huggins
HIGH SPRINGS -- Nell Loretta Hart Huggins of High Springs died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 79.
Mrs. Huggins was born in Newberry and moved to High Springs from Ocala in 1975.
She was a homemaker and a member of Santa Fe Hills Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Huggins.
Survivors include two daughters, Lennell Underwood of High Springs and Loretta Stevens of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters, Billie K. Crews of Waycross, Ga., Geneva Harkrader of Marietta, Ga., Macy Evans of Alachua and Minnie Lou Holder of Newberry; three brothers, John C. Hart of Gainesville, W.H. Hart of Newberry and Gary Hart of High Springs; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Herbert Otis Langford
HIGH SPRINGS -- Herbert Otis Langford died Sunday at his residence in High Springs. He was 59.
Mr. Langford was born in Newberry and moved to High Springs 20 years ago.
He was a farmer, and he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Langford of High Springs; two sons, Dennis Langford of Gainesville and Herbert Langford of Panama City; his mother, Orbie Pump of Winter Haven; a sister, Vivian Langford of Connecticut; a brother, William James Langford of Bartow; and a grandchild, Amanda Messer.
James L. Lawson
James L. Lawson of Gainesville died Friday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. He was 69.
Mr. Lawson was born in Mount Olive, N.C., and moved to Gainesville from Miami 30 years ago.
He was a retired bus driver and a member of Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Callie Lawson of Gainesville; a daughter, Jannie Lawson of Albany, Ga.; nine stepdaughters, Mary Lawson, Diane Lawson and Lottie Curtis, all of Albany, Ga., and Jennie McCoy, Joann Smith, Elouise McCoy, Rena McCoy, Ellen McCoy and Norma J. Neal, all of Gainesville; two sons, Leonard Lawson of Albany, Ga., and Jonathan Lawson of Macon, Ga.; and five stepsons, Defenson Lawson of Raleigh, N.C., J.L. McCoy, John McCoy and Leroy Neal, all of Gainesville, and Johnny Neal of Pine Hill, Ala.; 43 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Herbert L. Overstreet
Herbert L. Overstreet of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 67.
The Raiford native moved to Gainesville from Macclenny in 1987.
He was a retired electrical engineer and a member of the Gainesville Christian Church.
He received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal for his service in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hella M. Overstreet; and a grandson.
Survivors include his wife, Christina Overstreet of Gainesville; a daughter, Lavonia Drabot of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Keith Overstreet of Greer, S.C., and Marcus Overstreet of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Lee Downing of Jacksonville; a brother, William Overstreet of Greer, S.C.; and five grandchildren.
Patricia Roberts Patterson
Patricia Roberts Patterson of Gainesville died Tuesday in Gainesville. She was 71.
Mrs. Patterson was born in Fort Myers and moved to Gainesville from Denton, Texas, in 1980.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, where she served as Sunday school teacher. She had been active in Habitat for Humanity.
She graduated from Stetson University in 1950.
Survivors include her husband, Benton Patterson of Gainesville; two daughters, Marce Wood of Grand Marais, Minn., and Gina Branham of Gainesville; three sons, James R. Patterson of Carrollton, Texas, Benton Patterson Jr. of Shreveport, La., and Coleman Patterson of Abilene, Texas; and 14 grandchildren.
Arthur Randolph Pelham
MELROSE -- Arthur Randolph Pelham, a lifelong resident of Melrose, died Saturday at Shands at AGH following a brief illness. He was 91.
Mr. Pelham was a retired mechanic and bus driver with the Putnam County School Board. He was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Melrose.
He was also a member of the Bethel Grand Lodge of Waldo.
Mr. Pelham was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Mills Pelham.
Survivors include three daughters, Edna Perry and Lettie Anderson, both of Melrose, and Frances McGinnis of Gainesville; five sons, Edgar Pelham of Albany, Ga., James Pelham and Solomon Pelham, both of El Paso, Texas, Randy Pelham of Hastings and the Rev. Gregory E. Pelham of Alachua; 35 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
