Pheriba L. Atwater
Pheriba L. Atwater of Gainesville died Monday. She was 95.
She was born in Alachua and moved to Gainesville in 1940. She received a master's degree in education from the University of Florida and was a retired schoolteacher.
She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Huguenot Society, the Southern Dames and First United Methodist Church of Gainesville.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary S. Webb of Hendersonville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Steven Webb and Susan Veerman, both of North Carolina, Don Mallard of Keystone Heights and Doug Mallard of Waldo; and eight great-grandchildren.
Christopher Shelton Boyles
Christopher Shelton Boyles of Gainesville died Saturday after a motorcycle accident. He was 31.
Mr. Boyles lived in Gainesville his entire life and was a certified service technician at Wade Raulerson Honda. He graduated from Buchholz High School in 1987, and attended Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida.
He enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, cooking and listening to music.
Survivors include his father, Shelton Boyles of Gainesville; his mother, Beth Meadows Boyles of Gainesville; a sister, Kelly Headrick of Austin, Texas; a brother-in-law, Carter Headrick of Austin; and his grandmother, Burney Horne.
Edwin O. Howard
LAKE CITY -- Edwin O. Howard of Lake City died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida after a long illness. He was 67.
Mr. Howard was a native of Brooker and lived most of his life in Ormond Beach before moving to Lake City in March. He was a graduate of UF, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
He worked for General Electric in the aerospace division in Daytona Beach and retired in 1994. He also worked for the Volusia County Emergency Radio Department from 1994 to 1998 in DeLand.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Lake City and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Pansy Diane Howard of Lake City; a son, Edwin Ray Howard of Kenosha, Wis.; a daughter, Cheri Howard of Gainesville; his mother, Virginia Lee of McIntosh; three brothers, R.C. Howard of Brooker, Roy Howard of Concord, N.H., and Alvin Howard of Starke; a sister, Marzie Kinchen of Melrose; and a grandson, Justin Ray Howard of Kenosha.
R. Alan Hudgins
R. Alan Hudgins of Gainesville died Sunday. He was 37.
Mr. Hudgins lived in Gainesville his entire life and was the manager of Walker's La-Z-Boy Gallery and Thomasville Home Furnishings of Ocala.
He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1981 and from Stetson University in 1987. He was vice president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was a member of the Ocala and Gainesville Chamber of Commerce organizations.
He was Baptist, and was a member of the state and national Furniture Dealers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kate Walker Hudgins of Gainesville; his parents, Bob and Jean Hudgins of Lakeland and Mary Ann and Carl Cox of Lecanto; and two sisters, Terri Lynn Hudgins Link of Conyers, Ga., and Tiffany Kristin Hudgins of DeLand.
Rose Lilliston Mason
LIVE OAK -- Rose Lilliston Mason of Live Oak died Thursday at her daughter's home in Live Oak after a two-year illness associated with a stroke. She was 86.
She was born in Gainesville, Ga., and was raised on the eastern shore of Virginia. She graduated from Brenau College in 1936.
She was an active member of Annandale United Methodist Church in Virginia.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, William T. Mason III and daughter-in-law Donna G. of Fulton, Md., Julie Elise McGee and son-in-law Robert of Fredericksburg, Va., and Rose Mason Decker and son-in-law Andrew J. of Live Oak; and eight grandchildren, Cathy Dutton Cono, Thomas C. Mason, Carolyn S. Dutton, Stephen E. Mason, Bryan W. Dutton, Andrew J. Decker IV, Laura E. Mason and Rose Mason Decker Jr.
Lillian Dera Mathis
CEDAR KEY -- Lillian Dera Mathis of Cedar Key died Saturday. She was 73.
She was born in Cordele, Ga., and lived in Cedar Key for 11 years. Before moving to Cedar Key, she had lived in Gainesville since 1961.
She was a manager in retail business and was a member of First Baptist Church of Cedar Key. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Parker of Trenton and Lee Parker of Gainesville; three daughters, Mary Sue Florio, Rossie Slimak and Abby Lynne Parker, all of Gainesville; two brothers, Eugene Wynn of Albany, Ga., and Emory Wynn of Fort Mills, S.C.; and 11 grandchildren, including grandsons Tony Florio and Andy Slimak.
Josephine Smith
Josephine Smith of Decatur, Ga., died Saturday in Atlanta. She was 92.
She was born in Hillsborough and lived in Melrose for 30 years. She was a cashier for C&C; Grocery in Jacksonville.
Survivors include two daughters, Lucille Traylor of Decatur and Carolyn Fribourg of Miami; two sons, Jay Smith of Hulett, Wyo., and Nick Smith of Melrose; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Howard Kenneth Sligar
Howard Kenneth Sligar of Gainesville died Saturday in Gainesville, Ga., of natural causes. He was 80.
Mr. Sligar was born in Centralia, Ill., and lived in Gainesville, Fla., since 1977. He received a Bronze Star from the U.S. Army for his service in World War II.
He was a member of United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include, two daughters, Rebecca Green of Gainesville, Ga., and Sharon Elliott of Idaho; a son, Tom H. Sligar of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, David Sligar of Centralia; a sister, Betty Sligar of Centralia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Selwyn George Weintraub
HAWTHORNE -- Selwyn George Weintraub of Hawthorne died Saturday at his home after a brief illness. He was 83.
Mr. Weintraub was born in New York City and moved to Hawthorne from Miami three years ago. He was the owner of Broward Underwriters Insurance Agency for more than years.
He attended City College of New York and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Greater Miami Opera Guild, the Chopin Foundation and the Miami Salon Group.
Survivors include a brother, Mark Wynn of Ocala; two nieces who were his caregivers, Margo Chase-Dobrian of Hawthorne and Stephanie Chase Reitman-Swiss of Gainesville; and nine other nieces and nephews.
Mary Troy Crume
Area woman dies at 106
Mary Troy Crume of Gainesville died Sunday in her apartment. She was 106.
She was born in New Orleans and moved to Gainesville from Hollywood in 1987. She was The Village of North Florida's oldest resident, an artist, a businesswoman, writer, gardener and a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church.
She worked for the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., and was the first woman employed by Southern Railway's law division. When she was 94, she started a business painting shirts, canvas, bags, shoes and scarves.
Survivors include two daughters, Joey Isert of Hollywood and Susan Glikes of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchil- dren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Viola Melinda Corbin
JENA -- Viola Melinda Corbin of Jena died Monday after a long illness. She was 85.
She lived in Jena her entire life and was a member of Jena Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Corbin; a grandson, Patrick Corbin; and two great-granddaughters, Melissa Corbin and Amy Corbin.
Survivors include three sons, Homer Corbin of High Springs and Thurman Corbin and Wayne Corbin, both of Jena; three daughters, Shirley Davis, Janice Thomas and Laverne Rhodes, all of Jena; three sisters, Lilie Mae Barineau and Robbie Sheppard, both of Tallahassee, and Ethel Jordan of Cross City; a brother, Ulysses Corbin of Wilcox; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
William Hansler
FANNING SPRINGS -- William Hansler of Fanning Springs died Saturday at Nature Coast Hospital in Williston. He was 59.
Mr. Hansler was born in New York City and moved to Gainesville 15 years ago.
He was a retired detective with the New York City Police Department.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Hansler of Fanning Springs; two daughters, Sandy Brown of Hicksville, N.Y., and Tami Komar of Dawson, Ga.; two sons, William Hansler IV of Massapequa, N.Y., and Charles Budveit of Franklin Square, N.Y.; his mother, Ida Hansler of Levittown, N.Y.; a sister, Jacqueline Hines of Levittown; a brother, Stanley Hansler of Palm Beach; and three grandchildren.
M. Drew Hurley
ALACHUA -- M. Drew Hurley of Alachua died Sunday in Alachua. He was 57.
Mr. Hurley was born in Takoma Park, Md., and moved to Alachua from Tampa 33 years ago.
He was a professor at Santa Fe Community College and a member of the United Teaching Profession.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was a past president and treasurer of the Arredondo Dressage Society in Gainesville.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Hurley of Alachua; a son, Sean David Hurley of Rochester, N.Y.; his parents, the Rev. Wallis and Lori Hurley of Orlando; two sisters, Penny Gold of Indian Head, Md., and Brenda J. Hurley of Orlando; and a brother, Darryl L. Hurley of Jacksonville.
