Johnnie J. Allen
ALACHUA - Johnnie J. Allen of Alachua died Monday at Shands at AGH after a brief illness. He was 67.
He was born in AdelAdell, Ga., and moved to Alachua from Chiefland 48 years ago.
Mr. Allen was a farmer.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Allen of Alachua; four daughters, Johnnie Mae Freeny, Christine Allen and Tammy Allen, all of Alachua, and Helen Harris of Gainesville; two sons, Gary Allen and Edward J. Allen, both of Gainesville; four stepdaughters, Tammie Robinson, Sharon Robinson, Brittany Robinson and Danielle Merricks, all of Alachua; four sisters, Laura Bell Powell of Gainesville, Catherine McClain of Alachua, Bernice Hill of Panama City and Cynthia Banks of Lanett, Ala.; four brothers, Frank McCray of Woodbury, Minn., Lee E. McCray of Gainesville, Melvin McCray of Lanett, Ala., and Tory McCray of LaGrange, Ga.; 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Juanita Clark Bass
Juanita Clark Bass of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at UF after a lingering illness. She was 65.
She was born in Branford and moved to Gainesville in 1949.
Mrs. Bass was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lucretia Bass Tyson; and a son, Willie Bass.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Horace Bass Sr. of Gainesville; three daughters, Ruby Lee Bass, Mary Bass Tyson and Mattie Bass McCallum, all of Gainesville; five sons, Henry L. Bass of West Palm Beach, and Horace Bass Jr., Roy L. Bass, Edward Bass and Lee Roger Bass, all of Gainesville; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Reatha Mae Chukes Woods Eady
Reatha Mae Chukes Woods Eady died Wednesday at her Gainesville residence after a lingering illness. She was 82.
She was born in Quitman, Ga., and moved to Gainesville from Havana, Fla., 55 years ago.
Mrs. Eady was a retired child care provider.
She was a member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Mother of the Church.
Mrs. Eady was preceded in death by two husbands, Louis Woods and Ivory Eady; and a son, Joseph Woods.
Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Woods Filer and Lillie Godbolt, both of Gainesville; a son, John A. Woods of Gainesville; three sisters, Jannie M. Gilchrist of Sanford, Elvera Cohens of Gainesville and Mozella Vinson of Hartford, Conn.; two brothers, A.D. Chukes and Ruben Chukes, both of Tallahassee; and 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
George Hollis Gibson
TRENTON - George Hollis Gibson of Trenton died Tuesday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Gainesville. He was 71.
He was born in Palm Harbor and moved to Trenton from Gulf Breeze in 1988.
Mr. Gibson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired captain with Diamond M. Oil Co.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Gibson of Trenton; a daughter, Dorothy K. Gibson of Trenton; and a sister, Pansy Post of Gainesville.
Robert Maceo Granger
PALATKA - Robert Maceo Granger of Palatka died Tuesday at the Oaks Residential and Rehabilitation Center in Gainesville after a brief illness. He was 44.
He was born in Interlachen and moved to Palatka four years ago.
He was a retired supervisor at Sunland Training Center in Gainesville.
Mr. Granger graduated from Interlachen High School in 1971.
He was a member of the New Mount Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include his wife, Debby Granger of Waldo; his mother, Johnnie Mae Granger of Interlachen; two sons, Maceo Granger and Mario Granger, both of Waldo; a stepson, Michael Fowler of Alabama; two sisters, Helen Granger-Ware and Georgia Granger, both of Interlachen; and four brothers, Se Berry Granger of Columbus, Ga., Leo Granger, Cortez Granger and George Granger, all of Interlachen.
Willie Lee Hogan
TRENTON - Willie Lee "Bill" Hogan, former city commissioner of Trenton, died Tuesday at his residence after a sudden illness. He was 66.
He was born in Ocklawaha and moved to Trenton in 1947.
Mr. Hogan served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Davis Hogan of Trenton; his mother, Susie Gray of Trenton, four daughters, Sharon Thomas of Orlando, and Connie Baker, Pansy Gordon and Emma Hogan, all of Gainesville; four sons, Willie H. Hogan of Chiefland, Benjamin D. Hogan of Orlando, Eric V. Hogan of Trenton and Carlyle R. Hogan of St. Petersburg; two brothers, Calvin Gray of Gainesville and Danny Gainer of Crystal River, 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Nellie Sanchez Jamerson
BRANFORD - Nellie Sanchez Jamerson, a lifelong resident of Branford, died Wednesday at National Health Care in Lake City after an extended illness. She was 91.
She was a retired librarian for the Suwannee County Public Library.
Mrs. Jamerson was a member of the Burlington Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Jamerson.
Survivors include a daughter, Nellie Jamerson Baxley of Houston; a son, William Lavern Jamerson of Hawthorne; two sisters, Alma Slocum of Branford and Estelle Roberts of Bell; a brother, Willie Sanchez of Branford; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Deborah D. Kendrick
Deborah D. Kendrick of Gainesville died Sunday at the home of her parents after a brief illness. She was 36.
She was born in Fort Lauderdale and moved to Gainesville 21 years ago.
She was a teacher at Belleview Middle School.
After graduating from Eastside High School in 1981, she attended the University of Florida for two years and later received her bachelor's in mathematics from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Kendrick attended Mount Olive A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include her husband, Garry Kendrick of Gainesville; three sons, Garry B. Kendrick; Lester G. Kendrick and Geremy H. Kendrick, all of Gainesville; her parents, Barbara and Braxton Linton of Gainesville; a sister, Michelle B. Linton of Gainesville; three brothers, Reginald Linton of Naples and Braxton Linton Jr. and Jeffrey Linton, both of Gainesville; her maternal grandmother, Mariah I. Bell of Live Oak; and her paternal grandparents, Robert and Bernice Linton of McAlpin.
Ruth A. Lasher
NORWICH, Vt. - Ruth A. Lasher of Norwish, Vt., died Monday at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H., after an extended illness. She was 87.
She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Norwich from Starke in 1989.
Mrs. Lasher worked as a beautician for several years in the Pittsburg area, and later as a baker at West Miami Junior High School for more than 10 years. She was also a skilled homemaker.
She was a member of Starke First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Parrott of Norwich and Janet Ladwig of Homosassa Springs; two sisters, Lillian Wendell of Industry, Pa., and Margaret Retzer of Beaver, Pa; and six grandchildren.
Verila Mae Lewis
Verila Mae Lewis, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Saturday at Palm Garden of Gainesville after a brief illness. She was 66.
She was a homemaker.
After graduating from the Alachua County public schools, she attended Bethune-Cookman College.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Female Protective Society and the Pallbearers Lodge 113, where she also served as secretary. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Matthews of Gainesville; and three sisters, Vera Mae Davis of Gainesville; Viola Rowe of Miami and Louise Livatt of Chicago.
Ida Mae Norman Reddish
WALDO - Ida Mae Norman Reddish of Waldo died Wednesday at Shands at Starke after an extended illness. She was 79.
She was born in Bradford County and moved to Waldo from Cedar Key in 1994.
Mrs. Reddish was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Johns of Melrose; a son, George Larry Reddish of Lake Alto; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
