Beatrice Kistler Shaw
MICANOPY -- Beatrice Kistler Shaw of Micanopy died Sunday in her home. She was 71.
Mrs. Shaw was born in Mount Washington, Ky., and moved to Micanopy about three weeks ago from Biloxi, Miss. She was a retired waitress and a Baptist.
Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne Sterk of Micanopy and Bettina Baker of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; one brother, Raymond Hardin of Louisville, Ky; five sisters, Tina Browning of Biloxi and Katherine Klotz, Allene Shoope, Elizabeth Burke and Ruth Elaine Everett, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; a grandson, Shawn Michael Williams; and a great-grandson, Seth Michael Williams.
Ida Tucker Williams
Ida Tucker Williams of High Springs died Saturday in Ayers Health and Rehabilitative Center in Trenton. She was 88.
Mrs. Williams was born in Marshall County, Ala., and moved to Gainesville in 1940 from Albertville, Ala. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of God.
Survivors include two sons, Dormon Williams of St. Petersburg and Hubert Williams of Trenton; three daughters, June Orr of Opelika, Ala., Linda Ngin of Orange Park and Carolyn Baham of Jacksonville; one brother, T.M. Tucker of Georgia; three sisters, Ada White, Edith White and Mildred Batey, all of Ider, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
David Wilson
David Wilson of Gainesville died Tuesday in Gainesville. He was 82.
Mr. Wilson was born Chattanooga, Tenn., and moved to Gainesville seven years ago. He was a middle school science teacher in Wayne, Pa., and Pompano Beach. He was honored for volunteering at Hidden Oak Elementary School in Gainesville, Chiefland Elementary School in Chiefland and the Alachua County Welcome Center. Mr. Wilson was a Quaker and attended the Gainesville Friends Meeting.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his oldest son, David West Wilson. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Berkhouse Wilson; two sons John Bray Wilson of Cassadaga and William F. Wilson of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Marie Wilson Gates of Cassadaga; two brothers, William W. Wilson Jr. of West Chester, Pa., and Conrad Wilson of West Dummerston, Vt.; and one granddaughter.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida, the building fund of the new Gainesville Friends Meeting house or to a charity of choice.
Philip Hartshorn Clark
Philip Hartshorn Clark of Gainesville died Saturday in Gainesville after an extended illness. He was 87.
Mr. Clark, a lifelong piccolo and flute player, was born in Waltham, Mass., and moved to Gainesville 40 years ago from Orlando.
He was in the National Guard during World War II and played piccolo in the Cavalry Band, which later became the Armed Forces Band. He played with the Gainesville Community Band for 10 years.
He was a research entomologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, specializing in fleas and prevention of flea-borne diseases.
Mr. Clark attended Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Olga E. Clark; sons Robert Clark and Bruce Clark, both of Gainesville; two grandchildren; and one great- grandchild.
The family requests expressions of sympathy to be in the form of donations to a charity of choice.
Thomas L. Billings
Thomas L. Billings of Gainesville died on Sunday at the North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 72.
Mr. Billings was born in Toledo, Ohio, and lived in Miami and Jacksonville before moving to Gainesville in 1981.
He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.
He was a retired FDIC bank examiner and a member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a previous member of the Shands Auxiliary. He was also a member of the Holy Faith Catholic Church, where he served as a eucharistic minister.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Billings of Gainesville; a daughter, Rebecca Hilbert of Jacksonville; two sons, Bradford Billings of Jacksonville and Barry Billings of Winter Haven; and two grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Heart Association.
L.W. Fowler
HIGH SPRINGS -- L.W. "Wink" Fowler died Sunday at his home in High Springs. He was 85.
Mr. Fowler was a lifelong resident of Forest Grove Community in High Springs. He had formerly worked for Container Corporation of America.
He was a member of Center Hill Church of Christ.
Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Clarice Fowler of High Springs; a daughter, Wynelle Polk of Sun City Center; two sons, Jay Fowler of Huntersville, N.C., and Dub Fowler of Tallahassee; two brothers, Bobby Fowler of Starke and Paul Fowler of Newberry; two sisters, Mae Edwards of High Springs and Wynette Anderson of Newberry; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Alma Banks Hunter
HAMPTON -- Alma Banks Hunter of Hampton died Thursday at Su-El's Retirement Home after a brief illness. She was 91.
Mrs. Hunter was born in Asheville, N.C., and lived in Lake Butler for 20 years before moving to Hampton two years ago.
Mrs. Hunter was the widow of Grady Hunter. She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian.
She is survived by a daughter, Patsy A. Hunter of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Phil Hunter of Hampton and Jack Hunter of Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, Reese Banks of Barnardsville, N.C., and Wayne Banks of Asheville; three sisters, Letha Hollingsworth of Lake Butler, Wilma Brown of Salem, Va., and Idell Yount of Barnardsville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Fannette Wharton Lamb
KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Fannette Wharton Lamb of Keystone Heights died May 12 in Keystone Heights. She was 90.
Mrs. Lamb was a former dance teacher in Tallahassee.
She graduated from Florida State College For Women, now Florida State University.
Born in Miami, she moved to Keystone Heights 26 years ago.
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Lamb.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Durocher of Keystone Heights; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Bobbie Lee Terry
HAWTHORNE - Bobbie Lee Terry died Sunday at Shands at AGH of natural causes. He was 58.
Born in Jacksonville, Mr. Terry moved to Gainesville from Earleton 19 years ago.
He was a small-engine mechanic with the Alachua County School Board.
Mr. Terry is survived by his wife, Belinda Hilton Terry of Hawthorne; and his mother, Addie M. Hastings of Fairbanks.
Barbara Moore
LIVE OAK -- Barbara Moore died Wednesday at her residence in Live Oak following an extended illness. She was 53.
Mrs. Moore was born in Miami and moved to Live Oak in 1981.
She was employed as an office manager at Kmart for 25 years. She was a Methodist and a member of the Anna Miller Circle in Live Oak.
Survivors include her husband, Albert D. Moore of Live Oak; a daughter, Donnette L. Stover of Casa, Ark.; two sons, Darren Fogleson and Danny Fogleson, both of Fort Lauderdale; her mother, Alice A. Hodges of Guyton, Ga.; three brothers, Gerald Hodges of Tampa, Robert Hodges of Jacksonville and Charles Hodges of Richland, S.C.; and six grandchildren.
James L. Rhodes
James L. Rhodes of Gainesville died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was 92.
Mr. Rhodes was born in Lawrence, Mass., and moved to Gainesville from Fort Lauderdale 10 years ago.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Unemployment for more than 30 years and later for A.B. Sutherlands department store in Lawrence as a manager. He was also a Free Mason who belonged to the John Hancock Lodge Methuen and an honorary member of the American Legion Post No. 18 in Wolfboro, N.H.
He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Stella Rhodes of Gainesville; a daughter, Barbara Sevigny of Gainesville; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Rose Callan Steudel
NEWBERRY -- Rose Callan Steudel of Newberry died Friday at the Hospice House of Gainesville following a long illness. She was 76.
Mrs. Steudel was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and moved to Gainesville from Sarasota 10 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Herman L. "Bud" Steudel of Newberry; a daughter, Mary S. Bodle of Indianapolis; a sister, Margaret Callan of Milwaukee; a brother, Thomas Callan of Milwaukee; and three grandchildren.
