CROSS CITY -- Mickey Herring of Cross City died Wednesday in Gainesville. He was 51.
Mr. Herring was a lifetime resident of Cross City. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Old Town.
Survivors include his wife, Jennie Herring of Cross City; two sons, Jason Herring and Hubel Herring, both of Cross City; two daughters, BoKaye Herring and Haley Herring, both of Cross City; and a sister, Cindy Chestnut of Cross City.
Nellon Frances Hill
WILLISTON -- Nellon Frances Hill of Williston died April 17 in Williston. She was 79.
Mrs. Hill was born in Decatur, Ala., and moved to Williston from Hartselle, Ala., 3 years ago.
She was a retired nurse and a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Hughes of Hollywood, Carolyn Ward of Williston and Sheila Schomisch of St. Clair, Mich.; two sons, Charles Ledbetter of Lacey's Spring, Ala., and Steve Warren of Hobart, Ind.; a sister, Versie Haynie of Hartselle, Ala.; a brother, Terry Holmes of Moulton, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Sherman Howard
ALACHUA -- Sherman Howard died Saturday at his residence in Alachua following an extended illness. He was 96.
Mr. Howard was born in Quitman, Ga., and moved to Alachua 55 years ago.
He was a farmer and a member of the Church of God in Christ in Old Town.
Survivors include four daughters, Rosa Lee Robinson and Laura Bell Allen, both of Alachua, Vernall Keaton of Winter Haven and Joann Howard of Gainesville; five sons, Rubin Howard and Calvin Howard, both of Alachua, Albert Howard of Gainesville, Herman Howard of Tampa and Eugene Howard of Lakeland; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Bryant of Lakeland; three stepsons, Edward Miles, James Miles and Clyde Garrison, all of Gainesville; a sister, Beatrice Merrilli; 52 grandchildren; 114 great-grandchildren; and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
Woodrow Jamerson Sr.
WILLISTON -- Woodrow Jamerson Sr., a lifelong resident of Williston, died Monday at Oakview Care Center following an extended illness. He was 71.
Mr. Jamerson was a laborer and a member of the Church of God by Faith in Raleigh.
Survivors include his wife, Essie Mae Jamerson of Williston; three daughters, Sandra Jamerson of Williston and Kathy Sherman and Pamela Sherman, both of Ocala; two sons, Woodrow Jamerson Jr. of Ocala and Timothy Jamerson Sr. of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Paula Yvette Strange James
Paula Yvette Strange James of San Antonio, Texas, died Saturday in San Antonio. She was 38.
The Gainesville native was a telemarketer and a Baptist.
Local survivors include her mother and stepfather, Irabell and Howard Clark of Archer; her father and stepmother, Richard and Betty Strange Sr. of Raleigh; three brothers, Calvin Strange of Raleigh, Richard Strange Jr. of Lawtey and Eddie L. Strange of Ocala; and three stepsisters, Jackie Hunt of Raleigh, Rhonda Kelley of Gainesville and Nichole Brown of Williston; and a stepbrother, Renardo Clark of Gainesville.
Elizabeth Williams Jones
Elizabeth Williams Jones of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Specialty Care Center following a lingering illness. She was 82.
Mrs. Jones was born in Fort Lauderdale and relocated to Gainesville from New York in the early 1970s.
She was a chef and a life member of the Williams Temple Church of God in Christ, where she served on the Chamber Choir, the Young Woman's Christian Center and as the founder of the Mother's Club.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene E. Williams.
Survivors include two sisters, Mercede W. Reese and Gussye M. Buchanan, both of Gainesville; and a brother, Henry "Six" Williams of Gainesville.
Michael Mickey
FORT WHITE -- Michael Mickey of Fort White died in Fort White Tuesday. He was 87.
Mr. Mickey was born in Monesson, Pa., and moved to Fort White from Orlando in 1985. He was a machinery repairman. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was Russian Orthodox.
Survivors include his two daughters, Donna M. Newport of Gainesville and Jean Gallanes of Fort White; two sons, Charles Mickey of Gainesville and Michael Mickey of Kissimmee; two sisters, Margaret Sampey and Sue Mason, both of Poway, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Willie Lee Mills
MELROSE -- Willie Lee Mills, a lifelong resident of Melrose, died Monday at his residence. He was 88.
Mr. Mills was a retired laborer.
He was a member of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a senior ward for over 50 years. He served as chaplain for the choir union for 30 years.
He was also a member of the Edgar Masonic Lodge No. 201.
Survivors include a daughter, Vivian Mills-Wilson of Melrose; and a grandson, Ramon Mills of Gainesville.
Samuel Patrick Peterson
Samuel Patrick Peterson, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Sunday at Oaks Care Center following an extended illness. He was 66.
Mr. Peterson was a truck driver.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Peterson-Douglas of Orlando and Vivica Jones and Christine Peterson, both of Gainesville; seven sons, Samuel Tucker, Roderick Peterson, Solomon Hamm, Sam Peterson, Michael Peterson, Larry Peterson and Marcell Williams, all of Gainesville; three sisters, Willie Marie James, Juanita Johnson and Jessie Mae Robinson, all of Gainesville; two brothers, William Robinson and Annson Robinson, both of Gainesville; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Arthur Reginald Courtney Smith
Arthur Reginald Courtney Smith of Gainesville died Friday in Gainesville. He was 51.
Mr. Smith was born in Stanford, Conn., and moved to Gainesville from Pensacola in 1967. He was a senior computer programer in the department of statistics at the University of Florida. He was a pilot. He was a jazz and blues guitar player.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Courtney Smith of Pensacola; a brother, Thomas J. Smith III of Palmetto; and an aunt, Charlotte Smith of New Haven, Conn.
Linda Sue Starkey Stewart
LAKE BUTLER -- Linda Sue Starkey Stewart of rural Lake Butler died Tuesday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. She was 53.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Lake Butler from Archer in 1996.
She was a hand-crafter and specialized in women's purses before ill health forced her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Stewart, who died in January.
Survivors include her guardian, Dewayne R. Stripling of Lake Butler; a sister, Karen St. Pierre of Largo; and three brothers, Bob Starkey of Palatine, Ill., Bruce Starkey of Largo and Ronnie Starkey of Tennessee.
Elizabeth Turner
Elizabeth Turner of Gainesville died of cancer Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 74.
Mrs. Turner was born in Clymer, Pa., and moved to Gainesville from Lakewood, Ohio, nine years ago.
She was a Presbyterian and a former manager with Keaargard Dry Cleaners. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Joe Montalto Jr. of Gainesville; and a sister, Charlotte Stroud of Cleveland.
Miriam M. Tyson
STARKE -- Miriam M. Tyson of Starke died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 78.
Mrs. Tyson was born in Statesboro, Ga., and moved to Starke 65 years ago. She was a retired custodian and a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Walker of Titusville and JoAnn Hamilton and Linda Hampton, both of Starke; five sons, Eddie Tyson of Lakeland, Albert Tyson Jr. and Marvin Tyson, both of Orlando, Leroy Tyson of Columbia, S.C., and Willie Tyson of Gainesville; a sister, Betty Polk of Philadelphia; six brothers, Reuben McCall Jr. of St. Petersburg, Daniel McCall of Miami, Rosco McCall of Peoria, Ill., Norman McCall and Hyrom McCall, both of Atlanta, and Van Brannen of Savannah, Ga.; 21 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Arvilla Pierce Brant
Arvilla Pierce Brant of Gainesville died Saturday at Palm Garden Nursing Center of Gainesville. She was 87.
Mrs. Brant was a real estate broker.
Born in Hamden, Ohio, she moved from Columbus, Ohio, to Gainesville 12 years ago. She attended Ohio University.
Mrs. Brant was a member of the Clintonville Women's Club and the Columbus Board of Realtors in Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George William Brant.
Survivors include two sons, William E. Brant of Archer and George Joseph Brant of Gainesville; two daughters, Ruth Ragucci of Claremont, Calif., and MaryEllen Hynes of Oviedo; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
