Albert Mann Sr.
HAWTHORNE -- Albert Mann Sr., a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, died Friday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness. He was 81.
Mr. Mann was a retired Firestone Tire Company employee. He served in the U.S. Army induring World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Lee Mann of Hawthorne; two daughters, Hollie Graham and Allice Jackson, both of Gainesville; three sons, Roy Mann of Gainesville, Albert Mann Jr. and Rudolph Man, both of Hawthorne; a brother, Curtis Mann of Jacksonville; 34 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren.
Francis Thomas O'Dowd
Francis Thomas O'Dowd of Gainesville died Sunday. He was 64.
Mr. O'Dowd was born in Long Island and moved to Gainesville 19 years ago.
He was a truck driver for Roadway Express for 14 years, and he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor O'Dowd of Spartanburg, S.C.; a son, Frank O'Dowd of Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister, Gertrude O'Dowd of Troy, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
Earnest William Small
Earnest William Small, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died May 4 at Orange Park Medical Center in Jacksonville following a brief illness. He was 73.
Mr. Small was a retired custodian for the Alachua County School Board and attended Lincoln High School.
Survivors include a daughter, Floretha Small-Bryant of Gainesville; a stepdaughter, Geraldine Washington of Gainesville; a stepson, Alphonso Washington of Paulsboro, N.J.; two grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
Quentin Zylique Wright
HAWTHORNE -- Quentin Zylique Wright, the 20-month-old son of Tia Terrell and Kelvin Wright Sr., died Sunday at home in Hawthorne.
In addition to his parents, Quentin is survived by a brother, Kelvin Wright Jr. of Hawthorne; his grandparents, Temperance and James Elleby of Gainesville, and Tommy D. Fountain and Shirley Fountain of Orange Lake; and his great-grandmothers, Helen Terrell, Julia M. Gordon and Gracie Pearson, all of Hawthorne.
Eric B. Anderson
Eric B. "Andy" Anderson of Gainesville died May 18 in Ontario, Canada. He was 62.
A native of Ontario, Mr. Anderson moved to Gainesville in 1980.
He was a retired Mason and a real estate agent.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
Survivors include his companion, Linda Phillips of Gainesville; a daughter, Sheri Bryan of Gainesville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Anderson of Nova Scotia, Canada, and Craig and Cindy Anderson of Gainesville; a sister, Marilyn Hayes of Ontario; and five grandchildren, Margaret Anderson, Chad Cawley and Cassidy Cawley, all of Gainesville, and Zachary Anderson and Ethan Anderson of Nova Scotia.
Janet Lee Bird
MAYO -- Janet Lee Bird died at her home in Mayo on Saturday. She was 76.
A native of Rushville, Ind., Mrs. Bird had lived in Mayo since moving from Zephyrhills in 1981. She was a member of the Mayo Baptist Church and enjoyed hobbies such as sewing and basket weaving.
Mrs. Bird is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Bird; two sons, Larry Bird of Mayo and Jon Martin Bird of Perry; a sister, Doris Jordan of Statesville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Fannie Bess Grant-Joiner
Fannie Bess Grant-Joiner of Gainesville died Thursday in the Integrated Health Services Center in Gainesville following a short illness. She was 67.
Mrs. Grant-Joiner was born in Fort White and was a lifelong resident of Gainesville. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include two daughters, Florence Grant James of Gainesville and Wandra Woods-Jenkins and her husband, Tony Jenkins of Tallahassee; two sisters, Mariah A. Martin of Lake Butler and Florence Cottman of Gainesville; one brother, Jerry C. Grant and his wife, Mozell Grant of Lake Butler; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Alice Lamb Merritt
Alice Lamb Merritt of Gainesville died Sunday. She was 94.
Mrs. Merritt was born in Rockland, Mass., and moved to Gainesville three years ago from Dunedin.
She had a bachelor's degree from Boston University.
She was a homemaker and a Unitarian.
Mrs. Merritt was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Foster Merritt.
Survivors include two sons, Andrew H. Merritt of Gainesville and Richard F. Merritt of Philadelphia; a brother, Marshall Lamb of Fitchburg, Mass.; six grandchildren, Richard Merritt Jr., Jennifer Chantz, David Merritt, Kurt Merritt, Karen Merritt and Glen Merritt; and six great-grandchildren.
Myrna T. Funkhouser
ALACHUA -- Myrna T. Funkhouser of Alachua died Saturday at her daughter's home in Florahome. She was 89.
Mrs. Funkhouser was born in Corydon, Ind., and moved to Alachua from Plymouth, Ind., in 1957. She was a homemaker and attended High Springs First Church of the Nazarene.
Mrs. Funkhouser was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Funkhouser, a longtime Alachua resident; and a son, Floyd Ernest Funkhouser.
Survivors include three sons, Eugene Funkhouser, Dennis Funkhouser and Robert Funkhouser, all of Alachua; one daughter, Betty Gentry of Florahome; two brothers, Orville Tabler of South Bend, Ind., and Ashel Tabler of Rochester, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Thomas of South Bend and Geneva Funkhouser of Mishawaka, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 16 great- great-grandchildren.
Betty Lou Hummel
Betty Lou Hummel of Gainesville died Friday in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 78.
Mrs. Hummel was born in Dayton, Ky., and moved to Gainesville from Lake Worth in 1996. She grew up in Cincinnati. She was an avid bridge player and attended Unity of the Palm Beaches Church.
Mrs. Hummel was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Hummel, who died in November.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Harvey Baxter of Gainesville; her stepdaughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Michael Conroy of Gainesville; her stepson, Bruce H. Hummel of San Diego; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ken Small
Ken Small of Gainesville died Saturday in Shands at AGH after a brief illness. He was 91.
Mr. Small was born in Camden, N.J., and moved to Gainesville from Jacksonville in 1956. He was director of WRUF at the University of Florida from 1956-74.
He attended Cornell University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
He specialized in watercolors and created numerous commissioned works.
Mr. Small was a member of the Gainesville Artisans Guild, and the Gainesville and St. Augustine fine arts associations. He served as a judge for juried regional art shows and won more than 50 awards for his work.
Mr. Small was a member of the Retired Faculty of UF and was director emeritus of WRUF and WRUF-FM.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Adams Small of Gainesville; one daughter, Elizabeth Barham of Talking Rock, Ga.; one son, Kenneth Small of Seattle; one brother, Robert H. Small of Gainesville, Ga.; three grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.
Hazel Elizabeth Boyington
STEINHATCHEE -- Hazel Elizabeth Boyington died Wednesday at her residence in Steinhatchee following an extended illness. She was 56.
Miss Boyington was born in Pensacola and moved to Steinhatchee from Miami in 1963.
She was a Baptist.
Survivors include seven sisters, Betty Patterson of Jena, Merle Reed, Carol Beasley, Dale Martin and Bernette Peirce, all of Pensacola, and Shirley Dickey and Louise Lyons, both of Steinhatchee; and two brothers, Earl Boyington of Pensacola and Jack Boyington of Steinhatchee.
Jerry Gamble Jr.
CHIEFLAND -- Jerry Gamble Jr. died Thursday at his residence in Chiefland. He was 35.
A lifelong resident of Chiefland, Mr. Gamble graduated from Chiefland High School.
He received certification as a day care assistant from Central Florida Community College in Chiefland.
He was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Betty and Leon Buie of Chiefland; his father, Jerry Gamble Sr. of Jamaica, N.Y.; two sisters, Valerie Buie of Chiefland and Ebony Gamble of Jamaica, N.Y.; five brothers, Andrew Wilcox of Washington, Ind., Richard Buie and Andre Buie, both of Chiefland, and Eugene Gamble and Michael Wilcox, both of Gainesville; his grandfather, U.L. Gamble of Chiefland; and his great-grandfather, Andrew Lee of Chiefland.
