Glenn R. Armstrong

LAKE CITY - Glenn R. Armstrong of Lake City died Friday in Lake City. He was 76.

Mr. Armstrong was an airline mechanic and a lay minister. He also had served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.

He was born in Chester, Ill., and moved from Marble Hill, Mo., to Lake City last year.

Mr. Armstrong enjoyed fishing and gardening.

He was a Methodist.

Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by a son, Mark Armstrong.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Armstrong of Lake City; a son, Gregg Armstrong of Lake City; a daughter, Karen Angstadt of Lake City; two brothers, Earl Armstrong of Maple Falls, Wash., and George Armstrong of Atlanta, Ill.cq; three sisters, Eileen Karl of St. Louis, Mo., Doris Stevens of Kankakee, Ill., and June Talon of Ovieda; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Lake City.

Ruth Esther Berkelman

MELROSE - Ruth Esther Berkelman of Melrose died Friday in Gainesville. She was 90.

Miss Berkelman was retired from the engineering department of Southern Bell.

She was born in Duluth, Minn., and moved from Riverside, Calif., to Melrose 53 years ago.

Miss Berkelman was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church, the Telephone Pioneers, Galloneer's Club, and was a volunteer escort at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Crago and Frances McGinty, both of Keystone Heights.

Adele Galati

Adele Galati of Gainesville died Friday at the Gainesville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 77.

She was born in Camden, N.J., and moved to Gainesville from Port Charlotte in 1986.

She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Nicholas Galati of Gainesville; and two daughters, Darlene Pifalo of Gainesville and Roberta Galati of Philadelphia.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Friends of the Alachua County Animal Shelter.

Ruth Elizabeth Lockwood

ORANGE PARK - Ruth Elizabeth Lockwood of Orange Park died Wednesday in Jacksonville. She was 81.

Mrs. Lockwood was a homemaker and a member of Oak Forest Baptist Church in Orange Park.

She was born in Asheville, N.C., and moved from Gainesville several years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond H. Lockwood of Orange Park; two daughters; one son; one brother; and several grandchildren.

Ruth Roberts

HIGH SPRINGS - Ruth Roberts of High Springs died Thursday in Gainesville. She was 95.

Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of High Springs.

She was born in Lake City and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Roberts of Archer; a daughter; Susie Wilson of High Springs; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Eleanor Thompson

Eleanor Thompson of Gainesville died Friday at her home after a long illness. She was 84.

Mrs. Thompson formerly owned and operated the 13th Street Pharmacy. She also was a former secretary for the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.

She was born in Glasco, Kan., and moved from Jacksonville to Gainesville 44 years ago.

Mrs. Thompson was a founding member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Gainesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul F. Thompson.

Survivors include two sons, Karl F. Thompson and Richard P. Thompson, both of Gainesville; two granddaughters, Jaime Lyn Thompson and Robin Carol Thompson, both of Gainesville; and a step-granddaughter, Cara Condign of Gainesville.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Gethsemane Lutheran Church or to Hospice of North Central Florida, both in Gainesville.

Charles W. Burgin

EDGEWATER -- Charles W. Burgin of Edgewater died Saturday in the Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach.

He was 77.

Mr. Burgin was born in Seldovia, Alaska, and moved to Edgewater from Gainesville in 1994.

He was a retired research chemist at the University of Florida, where he developed Pro-Fibe. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Edgewater.

Survivors include his wife, Lila Burgin of Edgewater; three sons, Albert F. Burgin of South Daytona, F. Leroy Burgin of Dade City and Ronald D. Burgin of High Springs; two daughters, C. Joyce Krause of Newberry and Leanna Burgin of Gainesville; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Cancer Society, Southeast Volusia County Unit, P.O. Box 226, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170-0266.

Millie C. Rhodes

Millie C. Rhodes of Gainesville died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 86.

Mrs. Rhodes was born in St. Augustine and moved to Gainesville from Hastings 11 years ago.

She graduated from Ketterlinus High School in St. Augustine and was a retired farmer.

Mrs. Rhodes was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church in Hastings.

Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her first husband, John Lucas Smith, and her second husband, Jody Rhodes.

Survivors include one daughter, Marie S. Ayerbe of Gainesville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Essie Beatrice Bodiford

CROSS CITY -- Essie Beatrice Bodiford of Cross City died Monday at her home. She was 96.

Mrs. Bodiford was a homemaker.

Born in Lafayette County, she lived most of her life in Cross City.

She was a member of Cross City First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Bodiford enjoyed reading and studying her Bible.

Survivors include two sisters, Gussie Brownlee of Chiefland and Willie Bolton of Cross City; six nieces; and five nephews.

Alexis Nicole Griffis

MORRISTON -- Alexis Nicole Griffis of Morriston died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She was four months old.

She was born in Gainesville and she was a Baptist.

Survivors include her mother, Danielle S. Griffis of Morriston; her father, Brian M. Griffis of Morriston; her maternal grandparents, Tina Taylor of Williston and Leon Koon of Bronson; her maternal great-grandmother, Ernistine DeMott of Tampa; her paternal grandparents, Randy Griffis of Williston and Sherri Louis of Newberry; her paternal great-grandparents, Bill and Velvehree Griffis of Williston; and her paternal great-grandmother, Barbara Crawford of South Carolina.

Vincent Hoagland

OLD TOWN -- Vincent Hoagland of Old Town died Monday at his home after a long illness. He was 70.

Mr. Hoagland was a retired electric supply salesman in the St. Petersburg area. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Born in Peru, Ind., he lived in St. Petersburg for about 40 years before moving to Old Town two years ago. He was a volunteer at the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the All Children's Hospital's cancer ward and the St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Hoagland of Old Town; two daughters, Bobbie Wilkison of Peru and Connie Wilkison of Denver, Ind.; a son, Steve Hoagland of Clearwater; a sister, Florence Mrozowski of Holiday; four brothers, Raymond Hoagland of Peru, Donald Hoagland of Three Rivers, Mich., Bernard Hoagland of Wabash, Ind., and Frank Hoagland of Urbana, Ind.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
