Rosalee Curtis
ALACHUA - Rosalee Curtis of Alachua died Aug. 19 at Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 66.
Mrs. Curtis was a homemaker.
She was a lifelong resident of Alachua.
Mrs. Curtis was a member of God's Holy Temple in Chiefland.
Survivors include two sons, Earnest Mahamery and Franklin Mahamery, both of Alachua; three daughters, Blanche Mahamery of Alachua, Mae Frances Mahamery of Gainesville and Clarissa Jackson of Starke; six brothers, H.B. Curtis, Nathaniel Curtis, George Curtis, Johnny Curtis, Sylvester Curtis and David Curtis, all of Alachua; three sisters, Laura Jackson, Mary Hayes and Elouise Williams, all of Alachua; and eight grandchildren.
Louise Brown Gainey
Louise Brown Gainey of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH after a brief illness. She was 93.
Mrs. Gainey was a homemaker.
She was born in Tavares and moved from Tavares to Gainesville 76 years ago.
Mrs. Gainey was a member of the Senior Citizens Club, the Quilting Club, the Sewing Club and the Old Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Sunday Morning Band No. 597 and the Prayer Band.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Prince Gainey, and a daughter, Thelma Gainey-Jones.
Survivors include two daughters, Khalilah "Mary" Abdullah of Miami and Louvenia Gainey of Gainesville; two sons, Elder Daniel E. Gainey of Hallandale and Deacon Nathaniel B. Gainey of Ewing, N.J.; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.
Betty Deane Grene
Betty Deane Grene of Gainesville died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was 75.
Mrs. Grene was a homemaker.
She was born in Wichita, Kan., and moved from Maryland to Gainesville 19 years ago. She attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
Mrs. Grene was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. William B. Grene of Gainesville; a sister, Jolene Ashworth of Atlanta; five nephews; and four nieces.
Yulee Lawrence Kirchaine
HAMPTON - Yulee Lawrence Kirchaine of Hampton died unexpectedly Tuesday at his home. He was 78.
Mr. Kirchaine was a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer.
He was born in Jacksonville and moved to Hampton several years ago.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Takabayashi of Santa Ana, Calif., Connie Williamson and Karen Kirchaine, both of Hampton, and Jane Kirchaine of Ocala; three sons, Richard Kirchaine of Homosassa Springs, Timothy Kirchaine of Jacksonville and Yulee L. Kirchaine Jr. of Jacksonville; two brothers, Jules Kirchain no e Jr. of Palatka and Philip Kirchain no e of Jacksonville; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
John W. Welch Sr.
JONESVILLE - John W. Welch Sr. of Jonesville died Aug. 19 at his home after a long illness. He was 74.
Mr. Welch retired from Gainesville Regional Utilities. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was born in Jonesville and moved from Gainesville back to Jonesville 22 years ago. He graduated from Lincoln High School.
Mr. Welch was a member of Pleasant Plain United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Hannah Welch of Jonesville; two sons, Robert Lee Welch of Gainesville and John Welch of Augusta, Ga.; four daughters, Velma Johnson of Alachua, Nancy O'Neal of Jonesville, Rose M. Welch of Gainesville and Reba Irving of Worchester, Mass.; three brothers, Kermitz Clark of Evinston, Herbert Nelson of Wilmington, Del., and Isaac Nelson of Gainesville; two sisters, Willie Mae Bryant and Mary Daniels, both of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.
Catherine Hodges Murphree
Catherine Hodges Murphree of Gainesville died of a rare blood disorder Tuesday at Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 89.
Mrs. Murphree formerly taught choral music at P.K. Yonge Laboratory School, Kirby-Smith Elementary School, Buchholz Junior High School, Gainesville High School and Oak Hall. Her musical productions included "Kismet" and "The Sound of Music."
She was named "Musician of the Year" in 1983 by the Foundation for Promotion of Music in Gainesville.
She was born in Tallahassee and moved from Raiford to Gainesville 59 years ago. She received her bachelor's degree from Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She later earned a master's degree in Music Education from the University of Florida.
Mrs. Murphree was a member of the Junior League of Gainesville, the DayLily Circle of the Gainesville Garden Club and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of Bishop Weed Circle. She was past president of Alachua County Medical Alliance.
Mrs. Murphree was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter E. Murphree, a former mayor and director of the Alachua County Health Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Caycq Murphree Hartley of Bethesda, Md.; a son, Dubcq Murphree of Gainesville; a brother, Robert Randolph Hodges of Canton, Miss.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to either the Holy Trinity Parish Music Fund or to Hospice of North Central Florida.
Phyllis H. Cornell
Phyllis H. Cornell of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Cornell was a homemaker.
She was born in Detroit and lived in Merritt Island, Interlachen, San Mateo and Palatka before moving to the Atrium in Gainesville.
Mrs. Cornell was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Cornell.
Survivors include two daughters, Delores Spencer of Alachua and Barbara Mitchell of Moore Haven;cq a brother, William T. Matthews of Naples; seven grandchildren; six great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Charlie Daniels
MICANOPY - Charlie Daniels of Micanopy died unexpectedly Aug. 19 at Shands at AGH in Gainesville. He was 83.
Mr. Daniels was a retired electrician. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was born in Citra and moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Micanopy 29 years ago.
Mr. Daniels was a member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, where he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
Survivors include his wife, Romie Daniels of Micanopy; two brothers, Solomon Daniels of Reddick and the Rev. Richard Daniels of Leesburg; and three sisters, Willie Mae Stokes of Micanopy, Dorothy B. Morris of Mulberry and Margaret Tate of Reddick.
Ellen Louvenia Alexander Days
Ellen Louvenia Alexander Days of Gainesville died Saturday at Integrated Health Services in Gainesville after a long illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Days was a retired insurance agent for Central Life Insurance Co.
She was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.
Mrs. Days was a member of the Female Protective Society, Elks, American Legion Auxiliary, University City Floral Club, Exclusive Club, Pallbearers Lodge, and the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of choir No. 2 and the Missionary Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Yeddie Days, and a son, Eddie Days.
Survivors include two nieces, who were raised by Mrs. Days, Ovela Haile Alexander Williams of Gainesville and Roselee James Sutherland of Archer; four grandchildren, Velma Days, Ellen Days Scott, Eddie Days Jr. and Glenn Days, all of Gainesville; and six great-grandchildren.
James Hart Jr.
HAWTHORNE - James Hart Jr. of Hawthorne died Aug. 19 at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville due to injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was 57.
Mr. Hart was a retired printing press operator. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He was born in Lochloosa and moved from New Brunswick, N.J., to Hawthorne six years ago.
Mr. Hart was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Hawthorne.
Survivors include a son, Ernest cqHart of New Brunswick, N.J.; two sisters, Earthacq Mae James of Orangeburg, S.C., and Ola Mae Bryant of Hawthorne; three brothers, Clarence Slater of Bradenton, Eddie Lee Martin and Burniscq Brown, both of Hawthorne; and one granddaughter.
Arnether Dennis
ARCHER - Arnethercq Dennis of Archer died Friday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She was 84.
Mrs. Dennis was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Archer.
She was born in Mount Brooks and moved to Archer 60 years ago.
Survivors include a daughter, Maecq Franciscq Washington of Archer; two sons, Willie West Jr. of Gainesville and Jerome Perry Sr. of Archer; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
