Forest Drawdy
STARKE - Forest "Dock" Drawdy of Starke died Thursday at his home after a long illness. He was 62.
Mr. Drawdy was a retired sanitation collector.
He was born in Raiford and lived most of his life in Brooker and Starke.
Mr. Drawdy was a member of Dedan Baptist Church near Brooker.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Prescott Drawdy of Starke; a stepdaughter, Rose Mae Agilera of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two stepsons, Christopher Thornton of Starke and Russell "Popeye" Thornton of Lawtey; two brothers, Tommy Drawdy of Worthington Springs and Jimmy Drawdy of Hernandez, Tenn.; a sister, Anita Bolen of Oxford, Miss.; two half-brothers, Harry Stokes of Brooksville and Bob Green of Hernandez; three half-sisters, Annie M. Muir of Lake Butler, Jessie Geiger of Hampton and Pauline Harris of Starke; and seven grandchildren.
DeWitt Hagan
ALACHUA -- DeWitt Hagan of Alachua died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville.
He was 70.
Mr. Hagan was a retired salesman for Florida Hardware in Jacksonville.
He was born in Alachua and moved from Jacksonville back to Alachua eight years ago.
Mr. Hagan was a 1948 graduate of High Springs High School.
He was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Hagan of Alachua; two daughters, Susie Rawls of Williston and Barbara Vavrina of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; a son, Mike Hagan of Jacksonville; a brother, Lawson Hagan of Green Cove Springs; a sister, Canara Jones of Alachua; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
Leroy Herman Jaehne
Leroy Herman Jaehne of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH.
He was 81.
Mr. Jaehne was retired from Mountain Bell Telephone Co. He also was a tech sergeant III in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a ranger badge.
He was born in Chicago and moved from Salt Lake City to Gainesville 17 years ago.
Mr. Jaehne was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville and was a member of the Pioneers of America in Gainesville.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Virginia "Betty" Jaehne of Gainesville; two sons, Edwin Jaehne of Washington, D.C., and Richard Jaehne of Champaign, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
Franklin Chandler Jones
TALLAHASSEE -- Franklin Chandler Jones of Tallahassee died Thursday in Tallahassee. He was 86.
Mr. Jones was a mechanical and electrical engineer.
He was born in Albany, Ga., and moved to Tallahassee 24 years ago. He graduated from the University of Illinois.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen Sinkler Jones of Tallahassee; two sons, including Franklin Chandler Jones Jr. of Gainesville; three daughters; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to St. John's Memorial Fund, c/o St. John's Episcopal Church in Tallahassee.
Dean L. Pollock
Dean L. Pollock of Gainesville died Wednesday in Gainesville. He was 98.
Mr. Pollock was a farmer, a supervisor of refrigeration and air conditioning at the University of Florida and was an instructor at Santa Fe Community College.
He was born in Elnor, Ohio, and moved from Milford, Ohio, to Gainesville 54 years ago.
Mr. Pollock enjoyed singing, playing the organ and the violin, and Morse code transmissions.
He was a Methodist.
Survivors include three sisters, Celeste Malott and Alberta Pollock, both of Blanchester, Ohio, and Marie Hapner of Kettering, Ohio.
Thomas B. Samples
Thomas B. Samples of Gainesville died Thursday due to injuries suffered in an auto accident near Alachua.
He was 28.
Mr. Samples was a territorial manager for the Concrete Division at Florida Rock Industries.
He was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.
Mr. Samples was a junior achievement instructor, an Eagle Scout and a member of Westside Baptist Church, the Florida Masonry Association and the Development Review Board for the city of Gainesville.
He enjoyed boating and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Kirby Samples of Gainesville; his parents, William R. and Louise Samples of Gainesville; a brother, Billy Samples of Gainesville; and a sister, Lou Anne Edwards of Gainesville.
Preston J. Blackwell
BRONSON - Preston J. Blackwell of Bronson died Saturday at his home after a long illness. He was 81.
Mr. Blackwell was a mechanic.
Born in Hendersonville, N.C., he moved from Florida City to Bronson 16 years ago. Mr. Blackwell was a Protestant, and he enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include a son, Jeffrey D. Blackwell of Bronson; four daughters, Rita Alexander and Linda Sheffield, both of Bronson, Cynthia Harrell of Flat Rock, N.C., and Patricia LaFleur of Lanark Village; three brothers, Jim Blackwell of El Paso, Texas, Harold Blackwell of Hendersonville and Willard Blackwell of Etowah, N.C.; two sisters, Wanda Gilford and Brenda Buell, both of Elizabethton, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.
Eugene Milton Long
STARKE - Eugene Milton Long of Starke died Monday at Whispering Pines Care Center in Starke. He was 78.
Mr. Long was a retired appraiser for the Department of Revenue and for Bradford County. He also served in the Army Air Forces during World War II.
Born in Moultrie, Ga., he moved from Brooker to Starke 55 years ago.
Mr. Long was a member of the First Baptist Church in Starke, the Masons F&AM; Lodge No. 35 in Bradford, the Morocco Temple in Jacksonville, the Starke Shrine Club and the American Legion post in Starke.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Dowling Long of Starke; two daughters, Mary Ann Long Pater of Columbia, S.C., and Helen Jane "Sissy" Long of Gainesville; two sisters, Betty Ann Long Edwards and Martha Lois Epps, both of Starke; and one granddaughter.
Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton
OLD TOWN - Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton of Old Town died Saturday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She was 69.
Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker and a member of the Piney Woods Community Church.
Born in Tampa, she moved from Tampa to Old Town 12 years ago.
Survivors include her husband, Norris Hamilton of Old Town; a son, Jimmy Hamilton of Old Town; a daughter, Beverly Pivacek of Tampa; a sister, Beverly Domer of Tampa; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Elaine Margaret Traynor Peters
WILLISTON - Elaine Margaret Traynor Peters of Williston died Monday in Williston. She was 79.
Mrs. Peters was a nurse. Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she moved from Perrine to Williston 13 years ago.
Mrs. Peters was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Williston, the Ladies Guild, and the Family and Community Educators in Bronson.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Ralph Peters of Williston; two sons, Charles Traynor of Las Vegas and Bernard Metcalf of Homestead; a brother, John Traynor of Bronson; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Carolyn Marie Reiss
OLD TOWN - Carolyn Marie Reiss of Old Town died Friday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville after a short illness. She was 51.
Mrs. Reiss was a homemaker and a Baptist. Born in Modesta, Calif., she moved from Siloam Springs, Ark., to Old Town 14 years ago. She Mrs. Reiss enjoyed boating, fishing and sewing.
Survivors include her companion, Glen Polk of Chiefland; two sons, Cecil W. Reiss and Shannon D. Reiss, both of Houston; a daughter, Cynthia Reiss of Perry; a brother, Larry Edwards of Lincoln, Ark.; four sisters, Linda Sanders of Newberry, Shirley Snyder and Debbie Snyder, both of Old Town, and Pam Tester of Orlando; and three grandchildren.
