William Smith Sr.

POMPANO BEACH -- William "Sweet" Smith Sr. of Pompano Beach died Oct. 6 at Imperial Point Hospital in Pompano Beach. He was 84.

He was born in Alachua County, lived in Chiefland and moved to Pompano Beach when his health began to fail.

Mr. Smith retired from the Levy County school system.

Survivors include four daughters, Nadine McNeal of Groveland, Sarah S. Brown and Corine Hunter, both of Pompano Beach, and Willie Maud Blake of Fort Lauderdale; two sons, Willie Smith Jr. and William Smith Jr., both of Chiefland; three sisters, Henrietta Bethea of St. Petersburg, Rose Hickson of Alachua and Viola Barr of Reddick; a brother, Horrace Barr of Port St. Lucie; 30 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Bennie Delanie Stevens

ALACHUA -- Bennie DeLanie Stevens of Alachua died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 71.

She was born in Douglas, Ga., and moved to Alachua from Detroit in 1956.

Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Alachua.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, George Daniel Stevens Sr.

Survivors include a daughter, Vera "Dee Dee" Stevens Teel of Gainesville; a son, George Daniel Stevens Jr. of Alachua; four sisters, Frances McDermott of Cincinnati, Sylvia Hand of Douglas, Valerie Kirkland of Statesboro, Ga., and Patsy McClelland of Thomasville, Ga.; three brothers, Raymond Crozier and Tommy Crozier, both of Douglas, and Butch Crozier of Hinesville, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Margaret Collins Sweat

Margaret Collins Sweat of Gainesville died Wednesday at the Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 73.

She was born in Mount Dora and moved to Gainesville from Tallahassee in 1939.

After graduating from Gainesville High School, she traveled with her husband, Everett D. Sweat, while he was in the Navy. Upon returning to Gainesville, she worked for the Alachua County Health Department. She retired as the secretary to the nursing director.

She was a Protestant.

Survivors include her husband, Everett D. Sweat of Gainesville; two daughters, Cynthia Ford of Titusville and Rebecca Rogers of Jonesboro, Ga.; three brothers, Thomas Jordan Collins Jr. of Jacksonville, Harold Hamil Collins of Orlando and Robert Wiley Collins of Gainesville; a sister, Virginia Collins Robinson of Gainesville; and three grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.

Alpha D. Terrell

HAWTHORNE -- Alpha D. Terrell, a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, died suddenly Friday at Shands at AGH. She was 56.

She was an instructional aide at Shell Elementary.

Mrs. Terrell graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961.

She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Tia S. Terrell, Sonya D. Terrell, both of Hawthorne, and Yolanda L. Terrell of Albany, Ga.; a son, Schuyler Terrell of Hawthorne; her mother and stepfather, Julia M. Gordon and Roosevelt Gordon, both of Hawthorne; a stepmother, Helen Terrell of Hawthorne; three sisters, Lois Gadson of Pompano Beach, Pamela Gordon of Atlanta and Janae Terrell of Hawthorne; five brothers, Frank Terrell and Patrick Terrell, both of Gainesville, Reginald Terrell and Mario Terrell, both of Hawthorne, and Charlie Stater Jr. of Pensacola; and five grandchildren.

Naomi Anne Batts

Naomi Anne Batts of Gainesville died Monday at Integrated Health Services in Gainesville following a lingering illness. She was 56.

Mrs. Batts was born in New Haven, Conn., and moved to Gainesville from Wilmington, Del., in the 1980s.

She was a seamstress with Bon-Will Custom Glass Co. She was a Protestant.

She was a member of the Gainesville Reiki Assembly.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Ampley of Gainesville; two sons, Philip Jordan of Gainesville and Carlton Ampley of Fort Washington, Md.; a sister, Donna Greene of New Haven; two brothers, James Batts and Fredrick Batts, both of New Haven; four grandchildren; and her caretakers, who were her aunt and uncle, Richard and Edna Giles of Gainesville.

Clarice Chard

Clarice Chard of Gainesville died July 19 at her daughter's residence in Gainesville following a five-year battle with cancer. She was 81.

Mrs. Chard was born in Cleveland and moved to Gainesville from Syracuse, N.Y., 10 years ago.

She was a supervisor with the Office of Navy Liaison for the Selective Service during World War II. She was an assistant director of the Office of Consumer Affairs for Onondaga County, N.Y., until her retirement in 1982.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Chard of Gainesville; a son, Jeffrey Chard of New Hartford, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the Hospice of North Central Florida.

Luella Ricks Debose

WINDSOR - Luella Ricks Debose died Aug. 3 at her residence in Windsor following a brief illness. She was 79.

Mrs. Debose was born in Adrian, Ga., and moved to Windsor from Dunnellon in the 1930s.

She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Andrew Debose Sr.; a daughter, Annie P. Debose; and two sons, Andrew Debose Jr. and David Debose.

Survivors include three daughters, Juanita D. Henderson of Gainesville and Alice L. Debose and Darlene Debose, both of Windsor; five sons, Joe L. Debose and Anthony Debose, both of Windsor, Arthur Debose and Isaiah Debose, both of Orlando, and Samuel Debose of Pompano Beach; a sister, Dorothy R. Dunbar of St. Petersburg; 38 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Cleveland Johnson

WILLISTON - Cleveland Johnson died Tuesday at his residence in Miami. He was 72.

Mr. Johnson was born in Williston and moved to Miami two years ago.

He was a Baptist and a University of Florida employee.

Survivors include six daughters, Angie Brewer, Rachel Cameron, Audrey Brewer Aldrige, Lillie Brewer McGee, Katie Ross and Sonja Kirksey, all of Gainesville; two sisters, Bee Smith of Melrose and Pricilla Crews of Ocala; a brother, Jimmy Tombs of Gainesville; and a grandchild.

David Glen Morris

David Glen Morris died Sunday at his residence in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 44.

A native of Florida, Mr. Morris moved to Knoxville 20 years ago.

He was an employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from the University of Florida and his master's of business administration at the University of Tennessee.

Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Ann Morris of Knoxville; a daughter, Piper Ann Morris of Knoxville; a son, Ian Charles Morris of Knoxville; his father and stepmother, Marshall "Reed" and Louise Morris of Whittier, N.C.; and two sisters, Julie Morris of Starke and Bonnie Henderson of Havertown, Pa.

Jewell V. Salisbury

MICANOPY - Jewell V. Salisbury of Micanopy died July 30 at Shands at the University of Florida.

She was 75.

Mrs. Salisbury was born in Ballground, Ga., and moved to Micanopy from Atlanta 13 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Jackie Schoonmaker of Gainesville; and a grandchild.

John Sloan Jr.

John Sloan Jr. died Sunday at Shands at AGH of natural causes. He was 51.

Born in Cairo, Ga., he moved to Gainesville 33 years ago.

He worked in construction and as a laborer.

Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Roberta Sloan of Gainesville; his mother, Mildred Sloan of Gainesville; two sons, Michael Kelly of Philadelphia and John Sloan III of Gainesville; two daughters, Tiffany Brown and Roberta Sloan, both of Gainesville; a brother, Clyde Garrison of Gainesville; two sisters, Virginia Miller of Jacksonville and Bernice Robinson of Gainesville; and five grandchildren.

David Kenneth Turner

David Kenneth Turner died Aug. 3 at Shands at AGH of natural causes. He was 51.

Born in Gainesville, he spent his entire life here, working as a bus driver.

Mr. Turner attended Friendship Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son, David K. Turner of Gainesville; two daughters, Karen Goode and Kimberly Johnson, both of Jacksonville; a sister, Cathy Loretta Strick of Gainesville; and seven grandchildren.
