Jim Beall Sharp of Gainesville died unexpectedly Saturday at his home. He was 59.
Mr. Sharp was an academic advisor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida, where he also taught orientation engineering classes. He previously worked for DuPont in Beaumont, Texas, and later served in the Peace Corps.
He received several professional honors.
Born in Henderson, Texas, he moved from Homestead to Gainesville 25 years ago. He received bachelor's degrees with high honors in Psychology and Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternities.
Mr. Sharp was a member of the Living Faith Fellowship in Gainesville, where he was an assistant in science classes.
Survivors include a son, S. Michael Sharp of Gainesville; a daughter, Ruth Ann Sharp of Gainesville; and the mother of his children, Pat Sharp of Ocala.
Robert Verdell Haynes Sims
Robert Verdell Haynes Sims of Boston, Ga., died Saturday at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville, Ga. He was 41.
Mr. Sims was a former employee of Summer Funeral Home in Ocala and had been affiliated by several local funeral homes, including Cunningham Funeral Home and Sellers Funeral Home, both in Ocala, Dorsey's Funeral Home, Chestnut Funeral Home and Duncan Brothers Funeral Home, all in Gainesville, O.B. Samuels Funeral Home in Williston and Carnegie's Funeral Home in Chiefland.
Born in Tampa, he lived in Ocala for several years before moving to Boston one year ago.
Mr. Sims attended Mount Zion Church in Ocala and Morning Star Baptist Church in Georgia.
Survivors include two sons; two daughters, including Yolanda Monique Sims of Gainesville; his mother, Crozella Sims of Gainesville; his stepfather, Charles McNeil of Williston; three sisters, Rosa "Peaches" Harris, Wilma "Cookie" Bolton and Regina Veeren, all of Gainesville; three brothers, including Fred Snead of Gainesville; and a stepbrother.
Marie Lewellyn Stewart
STEINHATCHEE - Marie Lewellyn Stewart of Steinhatchee died Tuesday at her home. She was 75.
Mrs. Stewart was a bookkeeper.
Born in Arkansas, she moved from Suwannee to Steinhatchee 42 years ago.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jena, the American Association of Retired People and the Nature Conservatory.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard L. Stewart of Venice and Joseph "Butch" Stewart of Steinhatchee; a daughter, Joyce Hart of Steinhatchee; a brother, Keith Lewellyn of Flowery Branch, Ga.; a sister, Kathleen Richards of Hammonds, La.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Thelma P. Whisenhunt
PEMBROKE PINES - Thelma P. Whisenhunt of Pembroke Pines died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital Pembroke in Pembroke Pines. She was 84.
Mrs. Whisenhunt was a homemaker and a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Live Oak.
Born in Huntsville, Ala, she lived in Live Oak for overmore than 20 years before moving to Pembroke Pines two years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Whisenhunt; and a son, Dennis Russell.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Dick of Hollywood; three sons, Gene Russell of Atlanta, Jim Russell of Hollywood and Ron Russell of Delray Beach; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren.
Lunetta Victoria Hayes Williams
Lunetta Victoria Hayes Williams of Gainesville died April 7 at Palm Garden of Gainesville after a long illness. She was 83.
Mrs. Williams was a retired teacher for Alachua and Duval counties.
Born in Alachua, she moved from Jacksonville to Gainesville three years ago.
She was a graduate of Alachua County Training School, Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach and Florida A&M; University in Tallahassee.
Survivors include her husband, Otis Williams of Jacksonville; and two brothers, Alphonso Hayes of Alachua and Thedford Hayes of Newberry.
Allen Krome Bowen Sr.
YANKEETOWN - Allen Krome Bowen Sr. of Yankeetown died in Yankeetown on Friday after a long illness. He was 64.
Mr. Bowen was an auto salesman. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Born in Jacksonville, he moved to Yankeetown three years ago from Gainesville.
Mr. Bowen was a founder of the Gainesville Fishing Club.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Bowen of Gainesville and Curtis Dale Bowen of Dunnellon; a daughter, Deborah White of Apopka; and six grandchildren.
Mary Myrtle Holder
NEWBERRY - Mary Myrtle Holder of Newberry died Sunday in Trenton. She was 85.
Mrs. Holder was a retired deli manager at Grand Union in Dade County.
Born in Perry, she moved from Hialeah to Newberry 28 years ago.
Mrs. Holder was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newberry, where she helped organize the Dorcas Sunday school class.
Survivors include two sons, Neal B. Holder of Newberry and Darryl K. Holder of Fremont, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Daphyne Griffith of Newberry; and two grandchildren.
Marion Wesberry Douglas
CROSS CITY - Marion Wesberry Douglas of Cross City died Friday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was 42.
Mr. Douglas was a handyman. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
Born in Moore Haven, he was a lifelong resident of the area. He attended two years of college.
Mr. Douglas enjoyed weightlifting and playing football.
Survivors include two sons, Justin Douglas of Bell and Joseph Zipper of Cross City; two daughters, Stephanie Douglas of Old Town and Jackie Douglas of Bell; his mother, Betty Douglas of Cross City; a brother, Roscoe Douglas of Cross City; and a sister, Jane Miller of Cross City.
John Harris Jr.
TITUSVILLE - John Harris Jr. of Titusville died Sunday at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville. He was 75.
Mr. Harris retired from the U.S. Navy after serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He later retired as purchasing director from the Florida Department of Corrections in Lake Butler.
Born in Chattahoochee, he moved from Lake Butler to Titusville five years ago.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Martha Harrington.
Survivors include his companion, Joyce Bishop of Titusville; a son, Kelly Harris of Lake Butler; a daughter, Linda Niekirk of St. Petersburg; a stepdaughter, Jackie Dowling of Lake Butler; a sister, Madge Broward of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Clifford Leroy Marinello
HAWTHORNE - Clifford Leroy Marinello of Hawthorne died Sunday at his home. He was 71.
Mr. Marinello was a retired maintenance chief for Siemens Corp. in Boca Raton. He also served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Born in Chicago, he moved from Pompano Beach to Hawthorne two years ago.
Mr. Marinello was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Mae Marinello of Hawthorne; five sons, John Marinello of Boca Raton, Mark Marinello of Fort Lauderdale, David Marinello of Gainesville, William Marinello and Patrick Marinello, both of Hawthorne; a sister, Nancy Lesch of Chicago; two brothers, Frank Marinello of Hot Springs, Ark., and Michael Marinello of Tempe, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.
