Rodney D. "John" Cody

Rodney Donell Cody, a.k.a. "John" was the second of four siblings: Allen, Jr., Mitchell and Don; born to the union of the late Florence E. Cody & Allen L. Cody, Sr. on November 12, 1940 in Lake Helen, Florida.
John was educated in the Volusia County Public Schools and was a lifelong resident of Lake Helen.
John enjoyed watching car racing, riding his many bicycles, landscaping and gardening.

Alzora Maddox McGill

Mrs. Alzora Belle Maddox McGill, daughter of the late George Maddox and Willie G. Crews was born November 30, 1923 in Shellman, Georgia and departed this life January 9, 2005 at Florida Hospital-DeLand. Sister McGill was preceded in death by three (3) brothers, Johnny Will Maddox, James Maddox and Jewel Maddox.
Earlier on Sister McGill attended public schools in Shellman, Georgia. She later moved to DeLand, Florida, where she attended Bronson School. She was employed by Mr. & Mrs. Mike Snow for many years as a household technician.
Sister McGill was converted at an early age, a faithful servant of God and not ashamed to give God the Glory. A member of Friendship Miissionary Baptist Church, where she held numerous positions and most defintely, a willing worker under the leadership of Reverend Walter Hendrix. She enjoyed singing in the choir with the "Three Musketeers".
Sister McGill established many wonderful memories with her church family and will never be forgotten. Her hobbies were sewing and fishing.

Shirley Maxine Fauntleroy

Shirley Maxine Fauntleroy, was born Shirley Maxine Mitchell, at Jewish Hospital to Virginia & William Mitchell. She was the only child from this union.
At the age of five Shirley was enrolled at Holy Rosary School, Brooklyn, New York and was a devoted Catholic with thoughts of becoming a nun at the age of seven years old.
Completing her studies at Holy Rosary, she continued her education at Saint Joseph's High School, Brooklyn. During her studies at Saint Joseph's, she met and fell in love with her lifetime partner Thomas Thoedore Fauntleroy, Jr. Her priest and spiritual father, Father Stonebridge on February 1st, 1959, married them. Their union produced four children: Thomas, III, Steven (departed at age 6 months) Barry and Jennifer.
Shirley has one brother, Larry Jackson and six sisters: Joyce, Jean, Joan, Jacqueline, Yvonne and Estemeralda from her father's second marriage. Shirley has seven beautiful grandchildren, Justin, Kristin, Christopher, Laura, Alexis, Jonathan and Aaron. Shirley has many beautiful nephews and nieces whom she adored as they have adored her. Shirley was a devoted wife, daughter, mother and mother-in-law, grandmother and daughter-in-law. She maintained a close and loving relationship with her mother-in-law: Alice Fauntleroy; daughters-in-law: Bonnie, Maxine and Shelly, as well as son-in-law: Arthur. She loved her sisters-in-law: Shirley Nelson, Yvonne Jones (both of whom has preceded her). She loved her late father-in-law: Thomas Fauntleroy, Sr. She maintained a loving relationship with sister and brothers-in-law: Doriah and Ayyub Jones, Alice Bailey and Edward Nelson. She was devoted to loving all people no matter what.
Shilrey always sent her mother Virginia gifts, for no special reason. She had the ability to give welcomed advice and comfrot to anyone in need. Shirley wore her husband like comforting clothing and they were inseparable. They were a true example of a committed and loving marriage.
Shirley worked as a librarian assistant while her children were attending grade school. When her children became older, she was able to work at a drug rehabilitation center in Queens, New York, for adolescence. The teenagers depended on seeing her because they were motivated by her spirit and love for them.
Shirley then worked as an assistant editor at CBS, Columbia records and she also attended the City University of New York. She then moved to CBS's assistant sales position for commercial spots. Everyone loved and depended on Shirley. She met many famous celebrities. Two notable meetings were with Muhammad Ali who saw her across the street from CBS and walked up to her and hugged her. Another was when she would repeatedly meet Carly Simon on the elevators of CBS, to the point where Carly Simon and her exchanged telephone numbers. Shirley's spirit was captivating. One of her many passions in life were motor travel and camping across country with husband and friends.
Shirley and Thomas have so many friends from childhood and from lifelong experiences, that they are all part of our family. Thomas and Shirley wanted everyone to share in their happiness of life's collectively and showed this on every occasion. Shirley believed that people should have patience, with an open heart, listen, talking, counseling and hugging no matter what.
We know that Shirley is dancing around in the universe on God's powerful love. Her body is gone, but she lives on. We have no regrets in our hearts because she is with God.
Tom took care of his wife until the end and she never spent one night in the hospital. Tom wrapped her with his love. He is the most devoted man that we know. We believe in our hearts and minds that God has put them together. The peace of Jesus is with you Shirley.

Bobby Lawayne Yarbrough "Bob" was born September 28, 1968 to Mr. & Mrs. Charlie L. Yarbrough in DeLand, Florida. He lived in Orange City. He departed this life January 13, 2005.

Mikeral E. Smiley, Sr. son of the late Mr. George & Mrs. Julia M. Smiley was born on June 29, 1952. He received his education in Volusia County School System and was a graduate of Southwestern High School, DeLand, Florida.
Mr. Smiley joined the Armed Forces and was an Army Veteran with an Honorable Discharge.
Mr. Smiley was a member of Mount Olive A. M. E. Church of Lake Helen, Florida. He enjoyed traveling over the road, as a trucker and also fishing and spending time with his grandson.
Mr. Smiley departed this life on Saturday, January 15, 2005.

David Birch, Jr.

Dad was born to the late David & Marie Cusack Birch on November 6, 1934 in DeLand, Florida. He was the third of four brothers. His brothers were James (Carolyn) of Orlando, Florida; the late Willie and Cleveland Birch. He also had three sisters: Geneva Williams of DeLand, Florida and the late Betsy Dixon and Ethel Birch. He had one sister-in-law: Johnnie Birch. Dad was educated in the DeLand public school system.
Dad relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to live with his Aunt Mary and late Uncle Lawrence Cutter. This is about the time he would meet and marry our mother, Lottie Birch Whitfield. To this union he would take two daughters, Lottie Atwell and Louise Wiah.
He also added to the family Angela (Rollie) Steele, David Birch, III, Erick (Cynthia) Birch and Lisa (Roger) Collins. He later added to the family: Lynwood and Walter Hayne, as well as special friends Mary Alice Samuels and Benjamin James. Dad had 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Dad was by trade a plumber. He laid wells and sprinklers; he was a builder and a business owner of the Parisian Motel. He was a God-fearing man and joined United New Hope Church under the leadership of the late Reverend William Barnett. Dad made sure his children attended church.
At about 5 a.m., January 17, 2005, God called Dad home to rest. We shall always hold our Dad dear to our hearts.
Herbert Mack Martin

Reverend Herbert Mack Martin, son of the late Reverend John H. & Maimie Elizabeth Martin, followed in the footsteps of his fathe who was the pastor of the Saint James Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, North Carolina for 27 years.
Herbert Mack Martin was a graduate of Livington College, Salisbury, North Carolina, where he received his B. S. Degree in Biology. He holds the academic degree of Minister of Divinity from the School of Religion, Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia and the M. A., R. Ed. Degree from the Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York City.
Reverend Martin served as Auditor for the Middlesex Central Baptist Association and as Chairman of the Haitian Mission program for the General Baptist Convention of New Jersey, helping to establish an Orphanage in Haiti.
He has also served in other organizations, the Perth Amboy Protestant Ministers Association and as Chaplain to Local # 13 of the Police Benevolent Association of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. For many years, he served as a member of the Perth Amboy Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners and as Vice Chairman of that board. He also served as Deputy Registrar of Deeds for Middlesex County, New Jersey and as a member of the Legal Committee of the Perth Amboy Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
On the 25th of June 1943, Reverend Herbert Mack Martin married the lovely and energetic A. Beatrice Dix of Birmingham, Alabama.
If we try to put into words or on paper all of the accomplishments of Reverend Herbert Mack Martin while pastor of Second Baptist Church would be an impossible attempt. Who can put on paper the lift his words of advice gave the down-hearted or the solace his words brought into the lives of the crushed, joy to those whom he led to know Christ and Faith that God cares about the least of his children.
These are intagible, the invisible accomplishments that really count most, achieved in the lives of others. The following are just a few of the accomplishments made possible under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. Herbert Mack Martin:
(1) 1957 - One-half block of land was purchased on Broad Street, complete with a rectory, a brick church building which included a seating capacity of 350 and a piped organ.
(2) 1958 - A Baptismal pool was constructed in the lower auditorium.
(3) 1960 - A previously used 29 passenger bus was purchased.
(4) 1961 - Daily Vacation Bible School and a B. T. U. Program was initiated.
(5) 1963 - Additional property was purchased which accomodated four classrooms, a pastor's study, one office and louges for both ladies & men.
(6) 1968 - The lower auditorium was paneled, a dropped ceiling was installed, the old frame house was torn down and a new parsonage was built.
(7) 1969 - Payments were made to the N. A. A. C. P. for a life-time membership and also embarked on a program to purchase a Heritage Life membership.
(8) 1970 - Central air conditioning was installed in the sanctuary.
(9) 1972 - A new International church school bus was purchased.
(10) 1977 - Additional land for off street parking was purchased.
(11) 1979 - The kitchen was remodeled.
(12) 1980 - a gas heating system was installed and cushions for the pews were purchased.
(13) Between June 1958 and August 1980 - 323 persons were baptized, 270 accepted on Christian experience, 46 by restoration and 11 by watch care.
(14) Clubs organized under Reverend Martin's administration are the Gospel Chorus, Trustee Aids, Willing Workers, Special Efforts, Education Committee and the Flower Club.
Hebert Martin served in the United States Army, having served as a Warrant Officer, serving in Italy.
Upon retirement, Reverend & Mrs. Martin moved to Central Florida, settling in the Deltona area. Following the call of God and mandate of our Covenant, he soon affiliated with the Greater Union First Missionary Baptist Church, DeLand, offering his assistance as Interim Pastor for two terms during the years of 1987 - 1990. During his tenure at Greater Union, many imporvements were made to the church; and the membership grew physically, financially and most of all, spiritually.
Reverend Matin was very instrumental in Greater Union re-establishing its affiliations with the Mount Zion Northeast Coast District Missionary Baptist Association, Inc.; the Florida General Baptist Convention; the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and also American Baptist Churches of the South. He brought to us a rich history of continious active participation and Biblically based instruction. Under his leadership, Greater Union received its "Life Membership" with the West Volusia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and our attention was drawn to community needs.
His love for young people was evident through the increase of youth attendance and participation in the worship service. The Youth Department was revitalized as well as the Youth Choir, Ushers and a growth in youth attendance in Sunday School. After his services were no longer needed for Pastoral duties, he continued to provide wisdom and guidance to many young people, couples and Ministers. Even as his health began to fail, he woud send financial contributions to causes which benefited young people.
Among his many accomplishments, while serving Greater Union, was a recommendation to the church to proceed with seeking candidates for Deacon. With his help and tutelage those men were set aside as candidates for Ordination. Of those men, two have answered God's call to the ministry, namely Minister Gerald V. Odom and Reverend Conrad V. Reid.
He beloved wife of 46 years, "Bea" was called home to rest on May 5, 1989. He departed his meaningful life on Thursday morning, January 27, 2005, after having fought the good fight of faith, assured that he had finished his assigned course.

Elmira Althea Wilson

Sister Elmira Althea Wilson was born October 25, 1929 to Sylvester McMillan & Mary Wilson. She attended Bronson and Euclid High Schools, graduating and later working in the Home Health Care Industry.
She was formerly a member of the Queen of the South Chapter # 141, Order of the Eastern Star, Progressive Pallbearers Lodge # 119, Heriones of Jericho, Joshua Court # 79 and the Amorettes.
She loved her church, South Thompson Street Church of Christ and served faithfully.
She is survived by her daughter: Shirley Wilson, Brooklyn, NY; a stepdaughter: Leslie Wilson, Buffalo, NY; a stepson, Earnest Clark, Teaneck, NJ; three grandsons: Marc Wilson (Nancy), DeLand, FL; Peter Wilson (Evette) and Paul Wilson, all of Winston Salem, NC; 10 great-grandchildren: Shavon, Marc, Jr., Christopher, Shaquan, Shyasia, Samaya, Shayla, Sharianna, Sharelle and Shayna; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Wilson; brother-in-law: Mich Wilson; a host of aunts, cousins, other relatives, friends and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Dorothy Delifus Bennefield a resident of 1209 West 6th Street died January 11, 2000. Survivors include: daughters, Patricia Wilson (Daniel), Cynthia Williams, Judy Brown (Tyrone), Sandra Holmes (Ralph), Debra Williams and Darlene Ball (Arthur); sons, Samuel Bennefield (Helen), Steven Bennefield, and Kelvin Wright (Yvonne); daughter, A. Denise Bennefield, Cathy Bennefield, Valerie Johnson (Anthony); sons, Randy White and Clarence White (Tarisha); daughter, Carmell White and Tarsha White; sisters, Inez Wright (James), Nettie Bryan, Carrie Delifus, Alvena Strickland, Dyris Williams, Francis Addison, Theresa Smith (David); brothers, Horace Delifus (Eleanor), Joe Delifus; godson, Ronald C. Gwendolyn D. Bing was born on July 26, 1951 in Duval County to the late Mr. Woodrow Bing, Sr. and the late Mrs. Eula B. Griffin. She departed life on this side, Wednesday, January 12, 2000.
She attended the local public schools in Dual County.

Melba L. Bogins, a resident of 1745 East 28th Street, died January 16, 2000. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, 3738 Winton Dr., Rev. John Guns, Pastor. Survivors include: four daughters; seven sons; one sister; and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Matthew Lavon Carswell was born September 27, 1984 in Jacksonville, Florida to Yvonne Walker and Tommy Lee Carswell, Sr.

Randolph Crews, Sr. was born in Henderson, North Carolina on April 4, 1935. He was the son of the late Abraham Crews, Sr. and Jesse Mitchell Crews.
Randolph joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson, North Carolina at an early age. He attended Henderson Institute, He also attended Kittrell Junior College and served in the United States Air Force. During that time he married Margaret Carroll of Henderson, North Carolina. They later moved to New York, New York and raised eight children. Randolph later remarried Yvonne Lawrene and had a son. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he rededicated his life to Christ and was ordained as a Deacon.
Randy leaves to cherish in his loving memories, eight children: four daughters, Shahnaz Germine and Sharon Bond of New York, New York, Shahrese Robinson and Tora Shipman of Jacksonville, Florida; four sons, Adrian of New York, Keith, Shawn and Randolph III of Jacksonville, Florida and preceded by his oldest son, Randolph, Jr.; one sister, Mildred Wimbush of Raleigh, North Carolina; four brothers, Irvin of Vallejo, California, Nathaniel of Mt. Vernon, New York, Melvin of Los Angeles, California and Theodore of Hillside, New Jersey; three sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law; four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; twenty grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Betty Jean Hall was born May 16, 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Nellie Kate Rivers and Herbert Rivers. She attended the local schools of Duval County. In 1961, she married the late John F. Hall. They were the parents of the late Kenneth Hall and Herbert Hall.
Betty Jean Hall was called Home on January 20, 2000. She leaves to mourn her passing: son, Herbert Hall; sister, Wilhelmina Edwards; brother, Samual Lampkins; sister-in-law, Bernice Lampkins; brother-in-law, James B. Lampkins, Sr.; a host of other relatives and sorrowing friends.
Mr. Ora Hall was born, March 22, 1914 in Lowndes Country, Valdosta, GA, to the late Mr. Willie and Lula Hall. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Rosa Johnson in 1944.
Ora received his education at the public schools of Lowndes Country. He moved to Florida at an early age and was employed with Jacksonville Box Factory for many years until his retirement from there.
He was a faithful member of St. Matthew Baptist Church, Rev. George A. Price, Pastor.
On January 21, 2000, as God was organizing his Army, He noticed He was missing one of his faithful soldiers, his name was Ora Hall. He leaves to mourn his demise, a loving devoted, wife, Mrs. Rosa J. Hall of 56 years; two sons and three daughters; one brother, Mack Hall; one brother-in-law, Rev. Ben Johnson, Jr.; twenty grandchildren, several nephews, among them, Rev. Paul Ruffins, a host of nieces and great nieces and one godsister, Sis. Emma Wyatt; other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
Rogenia Bradwell Hendley was born on March 8, 1917 in Quincy, Florida to the late Elmo and Mary McCray Bradwell. She attended the local schools of Quincy and Midway, Florida. Rogenia was united in marriage to Arthur Hendley, Sr. She accepted Christ at an early age at the St. Peters A. M. E. Church. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1946 and united with the New Bethel A. M. E. Church where she served faithfully for more than fifty years until her demise on January 15, 2000, under the pastorship of Rev. D. A. Anderson. She served on Usher Board #2, the Missionary Board, and on the Class Leader Council. She was a member of the Lily White Lodge #211, and a V. I. P. for Campus Towers Housing Development.
She leaves to mourn her passing, husband, Deacon Arthur Hendley, Sr.; five sons, Deacon Arthur Hendley, Jr. (Shirley), Willie Hendley, Carl Clemons, all of Jacksonville, Florida, Lawrence Hendley (Sharon) of Gray, Georgia, Jeremiah Clemons (Patricia) of Adairs, Georgia; one daughter, Jacquline C. Mr. Joseph Jonathan Jones, son of Mr. William L. Jones and Mrs. Lucinda R. Jones was born on January 1, 1981, in Brooklyn, New York. He departed this life on January 5, 2000 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jonathan received his formal education in the public school system of Brooklyn, New York. Moving to Jacksonville, Florida in 1991, he attended Highland Middle School, graduating from First Coast High in 1998. He furthered his studies at Florida Community College of Jacksonville for one year. He was a member of New Mt. Ararat Apostolic Church under the leadership of Dr. D. M. Roberts. He served as an usher and a member of the choir.
The family has suffered a great loss. He was loved by everyone he met. The Lord made a noble character, kind in every way. His life was beautiful and he would never say or do anything to anyone to harm them.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Sheila Davis Mallory was born on August 11, 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida to Edward and Willie Mae Davis. She attended the local schools.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Allen Mallory and unto this union a beautiful child was born.
She departed this life on January 2, 2000 at Shands Jacksonville Hospital. Ulyses Maples - was born August 28, 1923 to the late Henry Maples and the late Alberta turner in Camella, Georgia. He was the oldest of three children. He attended school in Camella, Georgia.
Ulyses had three children, Cynthia (John), Genia (Ronnie) and John.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted wife, Esther Maples of 42 years; brother, Melvin (Cindy); uncles, Obie Maples (Lavern); aunt, Leola Gibson; twelve grandchildren, two great-grands, four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, godmother, Marvell Ambs and a host of nieces nephews and sorrowing friends.
Mr. James Willie Merritt entered this life on April 18, 1909 in Albany, Georgia. Mr. Merritt departed this life on December 23, 1999.

Jerome L. Villamil (J-Baby) was born April 23, 1979, in Evanston, Illinois. At an early age, Jerome and his family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he remained until his untimely passing.
