Edward Earl Stuart
Dr. Edward Earl Stuart of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was 68.
Dr. Stuart was a veterinarian. He was president of AVM International, an exporting company, and provided veterinary consulting work in the Caribbean and South America.
Born in Lancaster, Calif., he lived in Miami for 25 years before moving to Gainesville nine months ago.
He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California in Davis.
Dr. Stuart was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Perrault Stuart of Gainesville; two daughters, Ann Shoemaker of Peachtree City, Ga., and Kristine Colver of Bellingham, Wash.; three sons, Eric Stuart of Key Biscayne, Kevin Stuart of Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Kyle Stuart of McIntosh; two brothers, Donald Stuart of Saugus, Calif., and Lee Stuart of Lancaster, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Eugene Adair Waterstraw Sr.
HAWTHORNE - Eugene Adair Waterstraw Sr. of Hawthorne died March 13 at his home. He was 73.
Mr. Waterstraw was an electrician.
Born in Rochester, N.Y., he moved from Rochester to Hawthorne 13 years ago.
Mr. Waterstraw was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce L. Waterstraw of Hawthorne; a daughter, Gail D. Mack of Winter Haven; a son, Eugene A. Waterstraw Jr. of Lakeland; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Raymond Everette Adkins
HAWTHORNE - Raymond Everette Adkins of Hawthorne died Saturday in Gainesville. He was 67.
Mr. Adkins owned Hawthorne Grocery Store.
Born in Orville, W.Va., he moved from Palatka to Hawthorne 25 years ago.
Mr. Adkins was a member of the Bass Masters and the Church of God faith.
He enjoyed fishing and boating, and was a Gators football and basketball fan.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella Adkins of Hawthorne; a daughter, Debbie White of Interlachen; two sons, Doug Adkins of Melrose and Johnny Adkins of Hawthorne; two brothers, Frankie Adkins of Perry, Ga., and Norman Adkins of Johnson; two sisters, Twila Williamson and Kathleen Williamson, both of Hawthorne; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Lillian Waters Beville
Lillian Waters Beville of Gainesville died Monday at her home after a long illness. She was 84.
Mrs. Beville was a homemaker.
Born in Manatee, she lived most of her life in Gainesville.
Mrs. Beville was a member of the North Central Baptist Church and the Home Demonstration Club in Gainesville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Morris Beville Jr.
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Lee Beville and Susan Beville Groom, both of Gainesville, and Salli Beville Crosby of High Springs; a son, Edgar Morris Beville III of Gainesville; two brothers, Royce Waters of Gainesville and Alvin Waters of Daytona Beach; a sister, Mae W. Beville of Archer; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
William Henry Cannon Sr.
CROSS CITY - William Henry Cannon Sr. of Cross City died Sunday at the Tri-County Nursing Home in Wilcox. He was 100.
Mr. Cannon was a timberman.
He was born on Shired Island, and he was a lifelong resident of the area.
Mr. Cannon was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cross City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Cannon, and a son, William Henry Cannon Jr.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and picking blackberries.
"He always said he wanted to live to be 100, " said Delene Robson, Mr. Cannon's granddaughter. "He never was in hospitals much and didn't take a lot of medication. He never complained or grumbled about anything. He was content with what he had. He had a great memory for everything. His mind was very sharp. One of our greatest pastimes was sitting down with him and listening to what life was like in the early 1900s. He could remember every detail."
Survivors include three daughters, Katie Lee Ross, Catherine Mills and Corine Farnell, all of Cross City; a son, J.D. Cannon of Cross City; a brother, Lonnie M. Cannon of Cross City; a sister, Ruby Mausseau of DeLand; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren.
Francis A. Frederick
WILLISTON - Francis A. Frederick of Williston died Sunday at Shands at AGH in Gainesville after a long illness. He was 70.
Mr. Frederick was a retired repairman for General Electric Co. He also was a U.S. Army paratrooper in World War II and the Korean War.
Born in Orange, N.J., he moved from Newark, N.J., to Williston nine years ago.
Mr. Frederick was a member of the Friends of the Williston Library and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
Mr. Frederick was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Teresa Frederick.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Joyner Frederick of Williston; four sons, Robert Frederick of Orange, N.J., Francis Frederick Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., William Frederick of Morris Township, N.J., and Thomas Frederick of West Caldwell, N.J.; three daughters, Patricia Frederick and Catherine Gruchacz, both of Seminole, and Theresa Wilkinson of Jacksonville; three brothers, Robert Frederick and Albert Frederick, both of Belleville, N.J., and John "Jack" Frederick of Williston; a sister, Delores Hoffman of Centerville, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Grace H. Harrell
Grace H. "Big Mama" Harrell of Jacksonville died Sunday in Jacksonville. She was 102.
Mrs. Harrell was a homemaker.
Born in Alabama, she lived in Florida most of her life before moving from Cross Creek to Jacksonville one year ago.
"She walked from Alabama to Florida behind an ox-drawn wagon when she was 9, " said Judy Bowles, Mrs. Harrell's niece.
She was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Jacksonville and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Harrell enjoyed fishing and quilting.
"We just bought her a pontoon boat last summer, and she kept going on that until last October. She was still fishing and quilting, " said Bowles.
Survivors include a son, Milton Bowles of Jacksonville; a nephew; three grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Virginia Linton
LIVE OAK - Virginia "Jenny" Linton of Live Oak died Sunday in Live Oak after a long illness. She was 68.
Miss Linton was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Live Oak.
She was a lifelong resident of Suwannee County.
Survivors include two brothers, Henry Linton of Macclenny and Buddy Linton of Live Oak; and five sisters, Mary English and Norma Lawson, both of Live Oak, Fran Coxwell and Nancy Allen, both of Jacksonville, and Betty Bernheim of Buna, Texas.
William L. Messick
SARASOTA - William L. Messick of Sarasota died Saturday in Sarasota. He was 77.
Mr. Messick had been employed in the finance accounting department at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida. He previously co-owned a dry-cleaning plant in Bethesda/Silver Spring, Md. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Born in Martinsburg, W.Va., he lived in Gainesville for 20 years before moving to Sarasota last year.
Mr. Messick was a deacon at Northwood United Presbyterian Church in Silver Spring, Md.
He was a Boy Scouts leader, a Little League coach and a member of the Elks Lodge in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Peggy L. Messick of Sarasota; two daughters, Sharon M. Weidner of High Springs and Judith M. Benedict of Watertown, Conn.; two sons; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
