Mildred M. Tindale Weimer
TAMPA - Mildred M. Tindale Weimer of Tampa died Tuesday in Tampa. She was 86.
Mrs. Weimer was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Avenue Church of God in Tampa.
She was born in Archer and moved from Archer to Tampa seven years ago.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Ab Tindale and Frank Weimer.
Survivors include a son; two daughters; two brothers; a sister; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
John P. Bartz
John P. "Jack" Bartz of Gainesville died Saturday at his home after a long illness. He was 74.
Mr. Bartz was a real estate broker.
Born in Webster Groves, Mo., he moved from Lake Worth to Gainesville 11 years ago.
Mr. Bartz was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church, the Amara Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge No. 245 in Lake Worth. He was past president of the Rotary Club in Lake Worth and was a former member of the Gainesville Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife, Johanna Dallmann Bartz of Gainesville; two sons, Douglas J. Bartz of Gainesville and John D. Bartz of Alpharetta, Ga.; a brother, William R. Bartz of West Palm Beach; and three grandsons.
Madeline Kendall Chase
Madeline Kendall Chase of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH. She was 87.
Mrs. Chase was a homemaker and a former library assistant at Dartmouth College. She also volunteered at the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce and the King's Daughters.
Born in Hanover, N.H., she moved from Mount Dora to Gainesville seven years ago.
She graduated from Concord Business School in Concord, N.H.
Mrs. Chase was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Wesley Fellowship Sunday school class at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Dora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thelbertcq Chase.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Garner of Denver and Ann Louise Allen of West Newton, Mass.; a sister, Eleanor K. Marshall of Ormond Beach; two brothers, Daniel Murphy and Robert Murphy, both of Center Harbor, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
Richard G. Cronin
FORT MYERS - Richard G. Cronin of Fort Myers died Saturday in St. Petersburg. He was 63.
Mr. Cronin was retired from the Special Forces.
Born in Detroit, he moved from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., to Fort Myers nine years ago.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Retired Officers' Association, Riviera Club of America, National Association of Chiefs of Police, Vietnam Veterans of America and St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Cronin of Fort Myers; two sons; a brother, Dennis Cronin of Gainesville; and eight grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Diabetes Association in Maitland.
Charles Robert Kelly Jr.
ISLAND GROVE - Charles Robert "Bob" Kelly Jr. of Island Grove died Sunday at Shands at AGH in Gainesville. He was 72.
Mr. Kelly was a former truck driver for Miami Transfer Co.
Born in Miami, he moved from Miami to Island Grove 11 years ago.
Mr. Kelly was a member of the Island Grove Baptist Church, the Teamsters in Miami and was a past member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Corinne May Kelly of Island Grove; a son, Daniel C. Kelly Sr. of West Palm Beach; a brother, Frank Kelly of Stuart; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Charles Walter Stephens
DOWLING PARK - Charles Walter Stephens of Dowling Park died March 29 in Dowling Park. He was 86.
Mr. Stephens was a farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church of Alachua.
Born in Alachua, he moved to Dowling Park 10 years ago.
Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his wife, Merlyn Stephens; and a son, Tim Stephens.
He was a Mason.
Survivors include a brother, Fletcher Stephens of Alachua.
The Rev. Delbert Vincent Underwood
The Rev. Delbert Vincent Underwood of Gainesville died Sunday at his home. He was 90.
The Rev. Underwood retired as a carpenter at Santa Fe Community College. He was also a former pastor of American Gospel Tabernacle and an elder at Christ United Methodist Church in Gainesville.
Born in Beaver Creek, W.Va., he moved from Beaver Creek to Gainesville 67 years ago.
He received his doctorate from Freedom Seminary.
The Rev. Underwood was a Shriner, a Mason, a business agent for the Carpenters Union No. 1278, and a building inspector for Veterans Affairs.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Eiland Underwood; and a daughter, Frieda Marie Underwood.
Survivors include three daughters, Marlene Pope of Childersburg, Ala., Mary Kreft of Greenville, S.C., and Martha Stephens of Gainesville; three brothers, Arlie Sharp, Harold Sharp and Julian Sharp, all of West Virginia; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Gustave Harrer, former library director, dies at 74
Dr. Gustave Adolphus Harrer of Gainesville died Friday in Green Cove Springs. He was 74.
Dr. Harrer was a former director of the University of Florida Libraries.
Shot in May 1983 by a former UF library staff member, Dr. Harrer survived and was left a semi-quadriplegic. He was appointed distinguished service professor and university bibliographer in December 1984.
"After six months in the hospital, he drove his own van, he drove his own wheelchair and went to work every day, " said his wife, Lib Harrer. "He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He surmounted his problems and led a very productive life."
After his 1994 retirement, he continued to work in library collections, especially in Germanic literature.
Born in Chapel Hill, N.C., he moved from Boston to Gainesville 30 years ago. He earned a doctorate in Germanic languages from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Harrer served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a German interpreter, working with prisoners of war in North Africa and Italy. In 1959, he earned a commission in the Army Reserves and retired in 1967 as a major.
He was a member of the National Library Association, where he held many offices. He was also a well-known lecturer, consultant and author.
The ISBN code number system for current publications, which is used across the country, was an outgrowth of articles by Dr. Harrer that appeared in two library journals in the early 1960s.
He was also a director of the United Way and served on the Alachua County Library board of directors. He was a charter member of the Barbergator Chorus, later serving as a president. He also belonged to the Gainesville Pilots' Association.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, serving as ruling elder.
Survivors include his wife, Lib Harrer of Gainesville; two daughters, Dr. Betsy Royster of Wilmington, N.C., and Kathy Radford of Dacula, Ga.; two sons, Hugh Harrer of Atlanta and Tom Harrer of Mozambique, Africa; a brother, Joe Harrer of Thibodeaux, La.; a sister, Marcella Congdon of Islesboro, Maine; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Scholarship Fund.
