Eugene DeBose Sr.
Eugene DeBose Sr. of Gainesville died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. He was 79.
Mr. DeBose was a retired construction worker. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was born in Tarpon Springs and moved from Gulf Hammock to Gainesville 60 years ago.
Mr. DeBose was a member of the Holiness Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Rushing.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Mae Singleton DeBose of Gainesville; 10 sons, Eugene DeBose Jr., Eddie DeBose, Charlie DeBose, Vincent DeBose, Barney Warren and Carl Warren, all of Gainesville, Michael DeBose of Long Beach, Calif, Cleveland DeBose of Tampa, Gregory DeBose of Heidelberg, Germany, and Marvin Clemons of Orlando; three daughters, Veronica Taylor, Carolyn Warren and Marilyn Warren, all of Gainesville; a sister, Charlie Mae Lee of Ocala; two brothers, J.D. DeBose of Gainesville and Alphonso DeBose of Seattle; 24 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mayme Edgmon Evans
Mayme Edgmon Evans of Gainesville died Thursday in Gainesville. She was 94.
Mrs. Evans formerly owned and operated Jim Dandy Bakery. She was also a registration assistant at Santa Fe Community College and was an Alachua County poll worker.
She was born in Athens, Tenn., and moved to Gainesville 61 years ago.
Mrs. Evans was a member of the Gainesville Woman's Club and the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, where she was a communion steward.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. Evans Sr.
Survivors include a son, A.J. Evans Jr. of Gainesville; and two grandchildren, Wesley M. Evans and Sarah E. Evans, both of Gainesville.
Elliott Dunn Hill
OCALA - Elliott Dunn Hill of Ocala died Thursday in Ocala after a long illness. He was 83.
Mr. Hill was a retired farmer.
He was born in Perry and moved from Orange Springs to Ocala nine years ago.
Mr. Hill was a member of the Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church in Cottondale and the Fellowship Masonic Lodge F&AM; No. 53.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hill of Ocala; a son; four daughters; a stepson, Gomer Koon of Gainesville; four stepdaughters, including Diane Farrell of Gainesville; 10 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Minnie Lee Ivery
Minnie Lee Ivery of Gainesville died Saturday at Shands at AGH. She was 85.
Mrs. Ivery was a homemaker.
She was born in Fort Valley, Ga., and moved to Gainesville 45 years ago.
Mrs. Ivery was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Pallbearers Lodge No. 159, the Elks, the University Temple No. 900, the Female Protection Center and the University Lodge No. 1218.
Survivors include three foster daughters, Janet Smith and Faye Dollison, both of Gainesville, and Bridgette Gillis of Atlanta; three foster sons, Sylvester Franklin of New York, William Redd of Gainesville and Ronald Watts;dk location and her caretaker, Fannie M. Mitchell of Gainesville.
Ruthanne McNamee
BRANFORD - Ruthanne McNamee of Branford died Wednesday in Branford. She was 54.
Mrs. McNamee was a homemaker and a member of the Beachville Christian Advent Church.
She was born in Bay City, Mich., and moved from Venice to Branford 13 years ago.
Mrs. McNamee was preceded in death by a son, Daniel McNamee; and a daughter, Lisa Dawn McNamee.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence A. McNamee of Branford; a daughter, Susan McNamee of Wellborn; a son, John McNamee of Branford; a brother, Richard VanConett of Branford; a sister, Roberta Beck of Venice; and eight grandchildren.
Rupert L. Murphy
Rupert L. Murphy of Gainesville died Friday in Gainesville. He was 89.
Mr. Murphy retired as an attorney for Interstate Commerce Commission. He was appointed to the commission by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1955 and reappointed by the following presidents until he retired in 1978.
He was born in Byromville, Ga., and moved from Atlanta to Gainesville 21 years ago.
Mr. Murphy was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church, the Shriners, and the Oakland City Masonic Lodge in Atlanta.
Survivors include his wife, Marion Kerlin Murphy of Gainesville; and a son, Rupert L. "Pete" Murphy II of Gainesville.
Mattie Johnson Nicholas
Mattie Johnson Nicholas of Gainesville died Wednesday at her home after a long illness. She was 71.
Mrs. Nicholas was a homemaker and a member of the Mount Herman Baptist Church.
She was born in Lake City and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Mrs. Nicholas was preceded in death by her husband, Chapman Nicholas; and a son, Willie James Williams.
Survivors include four daughters, Christine Johnson, Jeanette Day and Hattie Mae Williams, all of Gainesville, and Carolyn Edgel James of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, Rudolph Johnson and Arthur Lee Johnson, both of Gainesville; a sister, Virginia Knight of Miami; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Ruby Inez Reynolds
WILLISTON - Ruby Inez Reynolds of Williston died Thursday in Williston after a long illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Reynolds owned and operated Reynolds Grocery Store in Fairfield and later worked at Palmers Grocery in Reddick.
She was born in Shiloh and moved from Fairfield to Williston 65 years ago.
Mrs. Reynolds was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Reynolds of Fairfield and Clyde Reynolds of Gainesville; a daughter, Violet Mixson of Williston; 27 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Jessie Hawthorne Rigdon
LAKE CITY - Jessie Hawthorne Rigdon of Lake City died Thursday at Lake City Medical Center. She was 87.
Mrs. Rigdon was a lifelong resident of Lake City.
She was a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Kirby Smith Chapter No. 202.
Mrs. Rigdon was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Melvin Rigdon.
Survivors include a daughter, Alethia Walker of Greer, S.C.; a sister, Iva Mae Tucker of Jasper; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
William Albert Rountree
CROSS CITY - William Albert Rountree of Cross City died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville after a long illness. He was 63.
Mr. Rountree was a systems analyst. He also served in the U.S. Navy.
He was born in Lake City and moved from Atlanta to Cross City 19 years ago. Mr. Rountree was a Methodist and a member of the Private Pilots Association.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Rountree of Cross City; a son, Curt Rountree of Cross City; two daughters, Terri Rose of Hampton, Ga., and Cyndi McCurry of St. Petersburg; his mother, Floragene Rountree of Waccasassa; two brothers, Ernest Rountree of Jacksonville and Danny Rountree of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and six grandchildren.
Billie Margaret St. John
ARCHER - Billie Margaret St. John of Archer died Wednesday at North Florida Rehab and Specialty Care Center in Gainesville after a long illness. She was 39.
Mrs. St. John was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Archer.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford B. St. John of Archer; her parents, Marion and Barbara Waters of Newberry; three brothers, Andy Waters of Newberry, Carl Waters of High Springs and Coy Waters of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Cynthia Waters of Archer; and her grandmother, Callie Humphries of Newberry.
