Grace Kwolek

Grace (Freeburg) Kwolek, 83, died April 9, 2002, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, Ind.

She was born icon in Watertown, S.D., April 30, 1918, to Harry M. and Clara L. (Ludwig) Freeburg.

She was a winter resident of Punta Gorda, Fla., and a summer resident of Rockville, Ind. She retired as supervisor of the Records Division of the Department of Corrections in July 1982 after working there since 1974. Previously, she had worked as a secretary to the Federal Probation and Parole Office in northern Indiana from 1950 to 1955. From 1957 to 1960, she was an elementary school teacher in Dyer, Ind. She was the first female parole officer in Northwest District in Hammond, Ind., serving as parole supervisor for both adult and juvenile parolees from 1960 to 1970. She was the superintendent at the Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis for five years, from 1970 to 1975.

She attended Otterbien United Methodist Church in Bellmore, Ind. She also was a member of the Indiana Correctional Organization and American Business Women's Association. She was a 1957 graduate of Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind., earning a bachelor's degree in sociology.

She is survived by one daughter, Jane G. Burns of Plainfield, Ind.; son-in-law, Frank E. Burns; and grandson, Eric J. Burns, also of Plainfield. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Dale Freeburg, a sister, Ruth Freeburg, and both parents.

Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield, Ind., with visitation one hour prior to services. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Jack Miller. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Hospice at 8450 N. Payne Road, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Carl R. Larsen

Carl R. Larsen, 88, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died April 7, 2002, at Charlotte Harbor Healthcare after a long battle with age-related illnesses.

He was born icon in Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 15, 1913, and moved to the Punta Gorda, Fla., area in 1986.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy K. Larsen. He is survived by his present wife, Ethel Keys Larsen, and two daughters, Jeanne Larsen Danforth of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., and Lorna Larsen of San Francisco, Calif.

Carl was educated in the Cleveland schools, and received his bachelor of law degree from Cleveland-Marshall Law School in 1941. However, instead of pursuing a career as lawyer, he served as the legal partner in the real estate business of his father, John Larsen, followed by many years as a real estate appraiser.

He held memberships in ASA, MAI, SREA, NIREB and ILCA. Serving as a director of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers from 1956 to 1975, he also held the office of vice-governor for a time. He was very active in the appraisal of properties needed for the creation of the Ohio Turnpike. His hobby was sailing, and during his Cleveland years, he was a member of the Cleveland Yacht Club. When he moved to Punta Gorda, he promptly became a member of the Punta Gorda Sailing Club and served on the judge's boat during its races for a number of years. He also was a member of the Punta Gorda Fishing Club.

Internment will be in the New York area at a later date.

National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements

Dorothy Walden Marsh

Dorothy Walden Marsh, 91, of Summerville, S.C., widow of George Rolison Marsh Sr., died April 6, 2002, at Summerville Medical Center.

Mrs. Marsh was born icon on May 22, 1910, in Waterbury, Conn., a daughter of the late Gilbert Eugene Walden and Elizabeth Middleton Walden. She was a graduate of New Britain Normal School in 1929 and later received her bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State Teachers College. She taught school in Bristol and Milford, Conn., for 28 years. In 1970, she moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., where she was a member of the auxiliary and an employee of St. Joseph Hospital. She later moved to Summerville, where she was a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Dorchester Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, George R. Marsh Jr. of Summerville and Curtis W. Marsh of Biloxi, Miss.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Burial will be in West Cemetery, Bristol Conn. Arrangements are by Tri-County Cremation Center, Summerville, S.C.

Henry G. Ahlquist

Henry G. Ahlquist, 78, of Placida, Fla., died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital.

He was born icon June 12, 1923, in McKeesport, Pa., and moved to Placida 12 years ago from Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mr. Ahlquist retired after 42 years as a certified public accountant in Pittsburgh. He was a graduate of Robert Morris University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church. He was a 56-year-member of the American Legion Post 113 and a 50-year-member of Alliquippa Lodge 375 F&AM in in McKeesport, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Rotonda Golf and Country Club.

Henry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn Grose Ahlquist, and two sisters, Elinor Flickinger and Mabel Carlin, both of McKeesport.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, in the Doan Chapel at Englewood United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, c/o Sahib Temple, 600 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34232.

William J. and Ethel E. Becze

William J. Becze, 84, of Englewood, Fla., died Jan. 13, 2002, and Ethel E. Becze, 80, of Englewood, died Jan. 20, 2002.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. April 13 at the Good Shepherd Church, 2550 Englewood Road, Englewood.

Cheryl JoAnne Jackman

Cheryl JoAnne Jackman, 53, of North Port, Fla., died April 5, 2002.

She was born icon in Corry, Pa., on Sept. 23, 1948, and moved to North Port in 1994 from Louisville, Ky.

She received a bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and a master's in criminal justice administration from the University of Louisville. She retired from the Louisville Kentucky Police Department as a homicide detective and worked in the research department of Nielsen Media Research in Venice. She was a member of the Louisville FOP Lodge #6, the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and the Living Waters Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte.

Cheryl was the only woman of the Louisville Police Department to ever receive the "Officer of the Year" award.

Survivors include her parents, Richard D. and Donna Mae Jackman of North Port; two brothers, Ret. Sgt. Detective Richard J. Jackman and Ret. Sgt. Detective Daniel K. Jackman, both of Louisville, Ky.; two nephews, Sgt. Sean P. Jackman and Officer Daniel K. Jackman Jr., of Louisville; and two nieces, Christine J. Thomas of Louisville, Ky., and Kimberly J. Jackman of Orlando, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Lutheran Church of the Living Waters, 12475 Chancellor Blvd., Port Charlotte, Fla.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Living Waters, P.O. Box 8064, North Port, FL 34287, or Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Janice L. Coleman

Janice L. Coleman, 48, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away on April 9, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., surrounded by family and friends.

Janice moved to this area in 1989 from Flint, Mich., and was employed by Fawcett Memorial Hospital in the Emergency Department as a registrar.

She is survived by her parents, John and Betty Coleman; three brothers, Mitchell D. Coleman of Troy, Ohio, Dennis S. Coleman of Arcadia and Vincent D. (Lynsey) Coleman of Davison, Mich.; special friends, Joyce Coleman and Connie Frey; and many nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will celebrate Janice's life at 4 p.m. April 10 in the Port Charlotte Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Col. George R. Ronka, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 92, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 8, 2002, at Doctors Hospital in Sarasota. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Bessie S. Tittel

Bessie S. Tittel, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 9, 2002, in Port Charlotte, Fla. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

John H. Mullen

John H. "Jack" Mullen, 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002.

He was born icon Oct. 4, 1931, in Boston, Mass., to the late John J. and Alice F. (Bickford) Mullen. He came to this area in 1990 from Boston. He was a retired sales representative for Hilron Industry, and more recently worked as a driver for Dial-A-Ride since its inception in January 2001. He was a member of Punta Gorda Elks Lodge 2606, and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was past president of the Lions Club in Kingston, Mass. Jack enjoyed both golf and boating.

Jack will be greatly missed by his wife of 30 years, Carol; children, Jack (Sandy) Mullen of Pittsburgh, Pa., Karen Delaney of Wakefield, Mass., Jimmy (Mary Ann) Mullen of Seattle, Wash., Diane Mullen of Massachusetts, Mary (John) Rodwell of Billerica, Mass., Matthew (Michelle) Mullen of Peabody, Mass., and Maureen (Ralph) Capozzi of Woburn, Mass.; stepsons, Jamie Pittman of California and Jeffrey Pittman of Gloucester, Mass.; brother, Robert (Jean) Mullen of North Fort Myers, Fla.; sisters, Marilyn (Paul) Hardman and Elaine (Richard) Kestle, both of Reading, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 22 at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Jack's life will follow at 2 p.m., with Father Vicente Martin officiating.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Charles Louis Schmeich

Charles Louis Schmeich, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Hospice House, Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon May 4, 1919, in East St. Louis, Ill., and moved to this area in 1981 from Mokena, Ill.. He was a retired trackwork design engineer for ABEX Corp. of Chicago Heights, Ill., with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Englewood. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by a daughter, Carla Gale Harnew of Punta Gorda; two stepdaughters, Cindy Baumhardt of Port Charlotte and Kim Pennington of Monterey, Tenn.; a son, Charles K. Schmeich of Port Charlotte; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services and inurnment will be held at a later date in Homewood Memorial Gardens, Homewood, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory Port Charlotte Chapel.

Hazel T. Williams

Hazel T. Williams, 100, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002.

Born June 19, 1901, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Florida in 1954 from Putney, Vt. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal in Punta Gorda.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Tengquist of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two sons, Kenneth Williams of Port Charlotte and Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Alan Williams of Dover, Mass.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norton Moore Williams in 1965.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal in Punta Gorda.

Donald K. Davis

Donald K. Davis, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Charlotte Harbor Healthcare, Port Charlotte. Arrangements by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Albert O. Carr

Albert O. Carr, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, April 15, 2002.

Mr. Carr was born icon March 24, 1916, in South Portland, Maine. He started the New England Telephone Company in 1935, retired in 1976 and moved to Punta Gorda. He was the president of The Pioneers of Maine and a member of the Pioneers of Florida. He was instrumental in starting a scholarship program in Port Charlotte at the Charlotte Vo-Tech. He was a member of the Scottish Rite in Punta Gorda and Fort Myers, a 55-year member of Seaside Lodge Gin, Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and an active member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Punta Gorda.

Mr. Carr is survived by his wife, Anna, of 64 years; a son, Jon (Nancy) Carr of Brunswick, Maine; two daughters, Jo Anne (Steve) Cushing of Mountain Home, Ark., and Jean (Dick) Powers of Brunswick; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at Church of Good Shepherd in Punta Gorda at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2002. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Church of Good Shepherd building fund or charity of choice.

Charles Delbert Combs Sr.

Charles Delbert Combs Sr., 96, of Harbour Heights, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002.

Born Jan. 26, 1906, in Ogdin, W.Va., he moved to Florida in 1996 from Lake of Egypt, Ill. He was a physical therapist and was a member of the Illinois Masonic Lodge for 60 years. He was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church in Harbour Heights.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Harriet; a daughter, Mary (Bill) Dixon; three sons, Charles D. (Betty) Combs Jr. of Surprise, Ariz., Leonard (Erika) Combs of Lakeville, Ind., and Les (Heidi) Combs of Enterprise, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Community United Methodist Church, 27000 Sunnybrook Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33983.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Helen D. Honeywell

Helen D. Honeywell, 94, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002.

She was born icon on April 29, 1907, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Nathaniel J. and Olga Marie Flinta Danielson. Formerly of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, she had resided here since 1967. Mrs. Honeywell was a noted ceramic instructor and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was well loved and honored.

Surviving are her son, Charles V. Honeywell of Punta Gorda; a sister, Hazel D. Finney of Garrettsville, Ohio; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Raymond W. Honeywell; daughter, Mary Ann Steele; brother, David N. Danielson; grandson, Charles V. Honeywell Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Valerie Bennett, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. April 20 in the Punta Gorda Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight, April 19, at the funeral home.
