John C. Salter
John Calvin Salter, 57, of Portland, Ore., and Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003.
Mr. Salter was born
Sept. 25, 1945, in Boston, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Vietname War. A silversmith, he was a vendor in Seattle's Pike Street Market and later in Portland's Saturday Market for about 20 years. He lived in Husum, Wash., since about 1978. He was a political commentator. He was a seasonal resident of Port Charlotte.
Survivors include his companion, Sarah Arnold; a daughter, Rachael Salter Smith; parents, Carl and Olympia "Bicky" Salter; sisters, Carole Hodges and Deborah Chandler; brothers, Carl Salter and Joe Salter; a granddaughter, Ashley Smith; five nieces and three nephews.
The service is private. Remembrances may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Arrangements are by Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, Portland.
Dale W. Sensenig
Dale W. Sensenig, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, in Port Charlotte.
He was born
Jan. 29, 1917, in Lancaster County, Pa. Dale was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. After training in California and serving in the North Pacific Theater during World War II, he was discharged in 1945. Dale graduated from Temple University with a bachelor's degree and worked for the next 30 years in the classic parameters of manufacturing engineering. Dale worked for Bearings Co. of America, Borg-Warner Corp. and Dayand Zimmerman Consulting Engineers. He held memberships in three professional organizations: Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers and Real Estate Investors of Lancaster County. Dale enjoyed antique furniture refinishing, photography and boating. He was a member of Sportmans Yacht Club of Port Charlotte and an active member of Northwest Port Charlotte Homeowners Association. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. Dale had lived in Port Charlotte for 10 years, coming from Lancaster.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Agnes; a son, Robert Sensenig of Washington, D.C.; and two grandsons, Patrick and Michael Sensenig, both of Washington, D.C.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, 2230 Hariet St., Port Charlotte, with Dr. Russell Hickman officiating.

Wayne A. Starnes
Wayne A. Starnes, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte.
He was born
March 27, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., to James and Zella Starnes. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. Wayne retired from Northern Illinois Gas Co. in Dixon, Ill. He and his wife moved to Port Charlotte in 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, BPO Elks Lodge 770 and American Legion Post 0012, all of Dixon, and Moose Lodge 1639 of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith (Rintoul) Starnes, of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Debra (Michael) Roberts, of Eldorado, Ill.; two grandsons, Douglas and Lee Roberts of Eldorado; his mother, Zella Starnes of Dixon; three brothers, Gene Starnes of Dixon, Charles Starnes of Nebraska and Richard Starnes of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James; and his sister, Joan Knack.

Earl L. Martin
Earl L. Martin, 90, of Englewood, Fla., Fargo, N.D., and formerly of Moorhead, Minn., died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Bethany Homes.
Earl was born
Aug. 13, 1913, in Oakport Township, Clay County, Minn., son of Roy and Helen Martin. He grew up in Clay County. He attended Clearview Grade School and graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College Campus School. He was united in marriage to Millie Sandie in 1935. They farmed the land homesteaded by his grandfather, Jasper Martin. In 1954 he started Martin Aviation, which he sold to his nephew, Gene Martin, in 1973. He retired in 1984. Earl and Millie spent their winters in Englewood since the late 1950s. He will always be remembered as a caring friend and mentor to many.
He is survived by two daughters, Lois Stein of Glyndon, Minn., and Joan (Arnold) Skarsaune of Vanvikan, Norway; one sister, Gladys Hendershott of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Wayne (Shirley) Martin of Maple Grove, Minn.; three grandsons, Jay Stein of Glyndon, Jon Stein of Fargo, Gunnar Skarsaune of Leksivig, Norway; one great-grandson, Aleksander Skarsaune of Vanvikan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie, in 1990; grandson, Jeff Stein in 1991; and his brother, Maurice, in 2003.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.
Bernice D. Obey
Bernice D. "Bea" Obey, 83, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at home.
Bernice was born
Jan. 17, 1920, in Grand Forks, N.D., the daughter of Ernest and Emma Kleven Johnson. She was raised from birth by her beloved aunt, Ruth Kleven Braaten. She and her husband built in Rotonda, Fla., in 1972, after living in Birmingham, Mich., for 21 years, where they raised their four children. Bea was a charter member, and past president of the Elkettes of the Clawson-Troy Elks lodge in Troy, Mich. After moving to Rotonda in 1978, Bea was actively involved in the Rotonda Elks lodge. She was co-founder and a past president of the Rotonda Lodge Elkettes. Bea was an avid golfer. She and her husband, Joe, were among the first members of the newly established Rotonda Golf and Country Club.
Bea is survived by her husband of 64 years, Joseph G. Obey; four children, Joseph of Rotonda, Jacqueline (Michael) Halpin of Englewood, Fla., Lawrence (Nancy) of Milan, Mich., and Pauline (Raymond) Brier of Monroe, Va.; her sister-in-law, Gilda Hargrave of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jefferson and Jason Halpin, both of Gaylord, Mich., Brittany Obey of Cool, Calif., Amanda Brier of Monroe, and Logan Obey of Milan; and a great-granddaughter, Sebastiana "Sonny" Halpin of Gaylord.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 5265 Placida Road, Grove City, Fla., which will be open to all friends.

Helen M. Sullivan, 67, of Englewood, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at her Sarasota County residence.
Helen was born
Nov. 4, 1935, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Alexander and Helen (Maker) Mader. She and her husband, Robert, lived in Hanson, Mass., where they raised their five children before moving to Florida.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years; children, Deborah Macomber of Whitman, Mass., Kathy Anderson of Marshfield, Mass., Robert Sullivan Jr. of Buzzard's Bay, Mass., Terri McIntyre of Englewood, Fla., and Jeanne Bates of East Bridgewater, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; sisters, Margarete Panarese and Emily Gough, both of Englewood; and a brother, James Mader of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel. The family's services will be later in Massachusetts.

Peggy A. Winkler
Peggy Ann Winkler, 78, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Bon Secours-Venice Nursing Care Center.
She was born
Nov. 23, 1924, in Ansted, W.Va., and moved to this area 17 years ago from Belvedere, S.C. Mrs. Winkler was a homemaker and a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood.
She is survived by her son, David A. (Joann) Winkler of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Patricia A. (Jim) Berna of Scottsburg, Ind.; an aunt, Georgia Morriss of Ohio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Winkler, in 1981.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3070 S. McCall Road. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Thelma Hardee
Thelma Hardee, 93, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at her residence.
She was born
May 13, 1910, in Black Hawk, Iowa. She came to DeSoto County more than 12 years ago from St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a graduate of St. Petersburg High School and Nursing School at Tampa General Hospital. She was a registered nurse and homemaker. She was a longtime member of Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Arcadia. She was one great lady.
She is survived by a son, Edward (Starr) Hardee of Arcadia; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Burial will be on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Memorial Park in St. Petersburg. Robarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Barbara D. Stohler
Barbara Dyches Stohler, 67, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at her residence.
She was born
Dec. 22, 1935, in Olar, S.C. She came to Arcadia nine years ago from Southport, N.C. She was an owner of Stohler's Tax Preparing and Bookkeeping in Southport and worked for Eckerd Drugs in the cosmetics department in the Charleston, S.C., area for many years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Arcadia. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Leon Ray Stohler of Arcadia; a daughter, Myra Banks; one grandchild, Crystal Jones; and one great-grandchild, Jada Judd.
Services will be in Charleston, with Burial at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Moncks Corner, S.C.

Ruby J. Williams, 78, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.
She was born
June 9, 1925, in South Carolina. She moved to Arcadia in 1995 from Ocala, Fla. She was a retired sales clerk in retail sales. She attended Beacon of Hope of Arcadia.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Harris of Stevenville, Texas, and Donna (Marvin) Daugherty of Arcadia; five grandchildren, Sherry Adams, Erica Coronado, Ryan Harris, Michelle Dechman and Kim Howard; and seven great-grandchildren.

John D. Durden
John D. Durden, 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and most recently of Wooster, Ohio, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, following an extended illness.
Mr. Durden was born
Jan. 18, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, to Frank and Jessie (Thorn) Durden. Since 1989, he had divided his time between Florida and the Akron area, most recently having homes in Punta Gorda and Wooster. He was a 1955 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College with a bachelor's degree in French, English and music, and a 1963 graduate of Kent State University with a master's degree in curriculum and supervision. Additionally, he studied at the University of Akron, Ohio State University and West Chester State University in Pennsylvania. Studies in foreign languages took him to the universities of Poitiers, Dijon and Paris, France, and to Javeriana University in Bogota, Colombia. He taught French and English in Akron schools from 1956 to 1970 and from 1971 to 1972. During the 1970-71 school year, he taught American literature and French in the bi-national school in Bogota. In 1972, he was appointed to the position of foreign language curriculum specialist for Akron schools, a post he held until his retirement in 1987. From 1984 to 1987, he was also the coordinator for bilingual education. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron, and the Ohio and Summit County Retired Teachers Associations. He was a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a men's professional music fraternity; emeritus member and past president of the Ohio Foreign Language Association; a member of Elliott Masonic Lodge in Canal Fulton, Ohio; and a 32nd degree Mason in the Akron Scottish Rite Consistory.
He is survived by a sister, Barbara (Cecil) Murphy; a niece, Debra Kesling; and nephews, Richard (Connie) Murphy and Cecil R. Murphy, all of Wooster. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.
It was his wish to be cremated. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home in Wooster, with the Rev. Brent Durham officiating. There will be a committal service at 3:30 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Park in Akron. There will be no visitation.

Pearl P. West
Pearl P. West, 95, of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003.
She was born
Nov. 22, 1907, in Kentucky. She moved to Arcadia in 1950 from Ohio. She was a retired secretary from G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital. Pearl led a women's Bible study group for years, lovingly known as "Pearl's Girls." She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Delores (Charles "Chuck") Schrieber of Lake Jackson, Texas; a sister, Jean (Louis) Heaston of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Sam Brett
Sam Brett, 81, passed away Sept. 3, 2003, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Known as "The Candy Man of Port Charlotte," he was born
June 3, 1922, in Bronx, N.Y. He was a sergeant in World War II, serving most of his time in the Pacific Islands. He held a master's degree in engineering from New York University, and had been a civil engineer for the city of New York prior to retirement. Special thanks and gratitude to Reggie Irish, his caretaker and dear friend for the past months, and the Disabled Veterans of Port Charlotte.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Theresa Brett; children, Angela M. Brett and David Brett, both of New York; brothers, Nick of California and Sid of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren in New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a service at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Port Charlotte. A graveside service with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.
Dean L. Weaver
Dean L. Weaver, 81, of Port Charlotte, Florida died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at his residence.
He was born
July 23, 1922, in Johnstown, Pa., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1958 from Roaring Spring, Pa. He retired as manager of the Punta Auto Supply Store after 36 years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. A former member of the Sons of the American Revolution, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 24th Tank Battalion, 13th Armored Division, under the command of Gen. George Patton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Olive B. Weaver of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Wunda (Anthony) Shuga of Austin, Texas, and Marsha (Carmelo) Cusacut of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sons, Dean L. (Debra) Weaver II of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Stephen (Carol) Weaver of Spring Hill, Tenn.; a sister, Dorris (Ross) Wright of Hopewell, Va.; two brothers, Donald (Ethel Mae) Weaver of Salix, Texas, and Merle (Dixie) Weaver of St. Michael, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Georgetta Weaver of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by two brothers, Faustin Weaver and Lee Weaver; and a granddaughter, Johanna Lee Weaver.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the funeral home. Robert C. Hart, 72, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2003.
He was born
Feb. 17, 1931, in Ozone Park, N.Y., and moved to Englewood in 1986 from West Babylon, N.Y. Mr. Hart retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Babylon, N.Y. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 113 in Rotonda West, Fla.; a member of the Edgewater Club in Englewood; and a member of the United Methodist church in Englewood. He served in the U.S. Army and National Guard and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his beloved wife Ruth; children, Robert (Jan) Hart of Scottsdale, Ariz., Bruce (Caron) Hart of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Cindy Hart of Islip, N.Y.; grandchildren, Gary Hart of Lake Worth, Fla., Michael James of Cape Coral, Fla., Robert Hart of Scottsdale, Thomas Hart of Scottsdale, Samantha Hart of West Babylon, N.Y.; Tracy Hart of Ohio, Joseph Vasquez of Islip, and Patrick Hart of Scottsdale; and four great-grandchildren.
