Laura I. Penttila

Laura I. Penttila, 88, of Englewood, Fla., died Saturday, April 2, 2005, in Englewood.

She was born icon Oct. 19, 1916, in Monongahela, Pa., to Josiah K. and Garnett G. (Harris) Brewer.

Laura was an office supervisor for the J.C. Penney Company in Elyria, Ohio. She was a former swim instructor at the Village of Holiday Lakes. She moved to the Englewood area 27 years ago from Amherst, Ohio.

She is survived by her son, William L. (Mary Ann) Penttila of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a brother, Elmer Brewer of Margate, Fla.; a sister, Loraine Losko of Brownsville, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Amy and Andrew Penttila. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Penttila.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, with funeral services to follow at the Englewood chapel of Lemon Bay Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Norman Klein

Norman Klein, 87, of North Port, Fla., passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at North Port Pines Retirement Center. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda, Fla.

George Lidell

George Lidell, 97, of Palmyra, Pa., and formerly of North Port, Fla., passed away Sunday, April 3, 2005. Arrangements are pending by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Robert D. Slater

Robert D. Slater, 66, of North Port, Fla., died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at his residence.

He was born icon July 9, 1938, in Central Falls, R.I.

Mr. Slater moved to the North Port area in 1974 from Cumberland, R.I. He was the owner of the Bowlarama in Port Charlotte, Fla., for 27 years before retiring two years ago. Mr. Slater was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Slater of North Port; children, Earl Slater of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Michael Slater and Dawn (Vince) Vuolo, both of Port Charlotte; mother, Mildred Slater of Antrim, N.H.; brother, Daniel (Kim) Slater of Antrim; grandchildren, Adam, Travis, Daniel, Timothy, Sarah, Joseph and Jacob; three nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Dana Slater, in 2000.

Services are pending.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the Animal Welfare League, 3519 Drance St., Port Charlotte, FL 33980.

Shirley Croft

Shirley Croft, 53, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, March 25, 2005. Robarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William R. Nolan Sr.

William R. Nolan Sr., 76, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, April 2, 2005.

He was born icon Dec. 27, 1928, in Northville, Mich.

Mr. Nolan served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired as an equipment mechanic and welder in Michigan. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union.

Mr. Nolan is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Lonna Litle and Paula Bailey, both of Homosassa, Fla., and Susan Nolan of Michigan; sons, March W. of Homosassa and William Jr. of Virginia; stepdaughter, Judy Moors of Michigan; stepsons, Tom Mable of Michigan and Jim Mable of Florida; brother, John Ranken of Springhill, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Little Willie's R.V. Park in Arcadia.

William S. Dailey Jr.

William S. Dailey Jr., 66, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005. Arrangements are by Affordable Cremations, North Fort Myers, Fla.

June J. Ross

June Joyce Ross, 69, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Neenah, Wis., died Saturday, March 12, 2005, in Venice, Fla.

She was born icon July 18, 1935, in Mosinee, Wis.

Mrs. Ross was a resident of Neenah, and wintered in Punta Gorda for the past 14 years. She was employed in the food service industry, and worked in the Winnebago State Mental Hospital in Winnebago, Wis., for 23 years.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Punta Gorda and Neenah; daughters, Debra Burrows of Appleton, Wis., Susan Houle of Neenah and Mary Young of Oshkosh, Wis.; sons, Michael Ross and Bryan Ross, both of Neenah; brothers, Rich Rohde of Cane Bed, Ariz., Terry Rohde of Wausau, Wis., Dan Rohde of Callis, Maine, Harry Rohde of Neenah, and Rodney Rohde and Bob Rohde, both of Mosinee; and sisters, Lana Sopel of Neenah and Dawn Chartrand of Appleton.

No services are planned at this time.

Farley Funeral Home, Venice, is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine R. Coleman

Josephine R. Coleman, 80, of Englewood, Fla., died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Englewood. Arrangements are under the direction of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Lillian Hartage

Lillian Hartage, 76, of North Port, Fla., passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005, in Englewood Health Care and Rehabilitation. James A. McKee Funeral Home, North Port, is in charge of arrangements.

Clark Freeman Jr.

Clark Freeman Jr., 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005.

He was born icon Nov. 12, 1923, in Baltimore, Md.

Mr. Freeman graduated as a cadet commander from the Maine Maritime Academy, class of 1945, the Milton Academy, class of 1943, and Harvard University, class of 1950, and he also served in the U.S. Navy. He held positions of president and vice president of a number of leading companies including Allendale Mutual Ins. Co., New Providence Corp., Appalachian Ins Corp., Building Owners and Managers Assoc., and Affiliated FM Ins. Co., which is now FM Global. In addition, he was a governing member at large of the Greater Provident Business Council in Providence, R.I.; vice president of the Turks Head Corp., a past executive director of the Industrial Foundation of Rhode Island, a board member and director of the Providence Athenaeum, a past commodore and life member of the Bristol Yacht Club and a member of the Twin Isles Yacht Club of Punta Gorda. Mr. Freeman served on many boards including the Downtown Business Council of Providence, Children's Friends and Service, East Shore District Nursing Association, Citizens Savings Bank, and the Peoples Savings Bank.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; a son, Clark Freeman III of Providence; a daughter, Jennifer F. Adams of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Caroline F. Martin of Center Sandwich, N.H.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 1201 Aqui Esta, Punta Gorda. Additional services and inurnment will be at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.

Memorial donations may be made to Congregational United Church of Christ, 1201 Aqui Esta, Punta Gorda, FL 33950; and Herreshoff Marine Museum, 1 Burnside Road, Bristol, RI 02809.

Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society, Harbour Heights, Fla.

Walter C. Newton

The Newton family mourns the passing of a devoted husband and nurturing father. His passing leaves a void not only in his family but also in the hearts of others who knew him. His wife and children treasure his unending love, support and rich legacy of humor as well as the abundant memories that he has willed to us all.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Walter C. "Newt" Newton, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005.

Newt was born icon Oct. 25, 1930, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., to Harold and Selma Newton.

For more than 20 years he served his country honorably as an officer, fighter pilot and squadron commander in the U.S. Air Force. His service began in 1951 and concluded in 1975 with his retirement at Hancock Air Force Base in Syracuse, N.Y. Additional duty stations included service in Vietnam, Japan, Korea and many locations throughout the United States. He received numerous awards for meritorious service. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he entered the private sector as a real estate broker and investor and became active in local politics in his community of Cicero, N.Y. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a past commodore of the Isles Yacht Club of Punta Gorda and had also served in the PGI Civic Association, military Officers of America Association (MOAA), Veterans Museum, Suncoast Chapter of SPEBSQSA, Republican Club and NAIC. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, boating and fishing.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 51 years, Lucy, and their children, Robert, Sharon and Harold (Theresa) Newton; brother, Anthony H. (Joy) Newton; and eight grandchildren, Amanda, Brittney, Hunter, Trevor, Dolan, Amy, Bobby and Sarah. Newt was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Bonnie Newton.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1303 Forrest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte. Burial with full military honors provided by MacDill Honor Guard will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Manasota Memorial Park in Bradenton, Fla.

Lillian J. Costa

Lillian Julia Costa, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nev.

She was born icon Dec. 25, 1915, in New York City, N.Y. She was a medical clerk, and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her son, Victor Delucia of Las Vegas; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were private.

Arrangements are by Nevada Funeral Service, Nevada Cremation or Burial Society, Las Vegas.

Ruby J. Dodd

Ruby J. Dodd, 80, of Harbour Heights, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon July 21, 1924, in Corsicana, Texas

Mr. Dodd worked as an A&P mechanic, serving in the U.S. Air Force for more than 30 years. He moved to the Port Charlotte, Fla., area 30 years ago from Ozark, Ala.

Mr. Dodd is survived by his wife, Delia M. Dodd of Harbour Heights; daughter, Gloria Dodd of Harbour Heights; sister, Nell of Texas; three

grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Roberson Funeral Home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda.

Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Rita G. Fury

Rita G. (Noel) Fury, 86, of Johnston, R.I., and formerly of Coventry, R.I., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence, R.I.

She was born icon in Sherbrook, Canada, and was a daughter of Omer and Bella (Roy) Noel.

Mrs. Fury retired from Texas Instruments.

She was a beloved mother, and is survived by her daughters, Janet A. Quirk, Nancy J. Goudreau, Kathleen J. Forant and Linda R. Couture; sister, Grace Phaneuf; brother, Renaldo Noel; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Fury; her parents; and her brother, Donat Noel.

Relatives and friends were invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Ave., Johnston, R.I.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, 50 Maude St., Providence, RI 02908.

Emile L. Mitchell

Emile Lavon Mitchell, 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005.

He was the son of the late Carl Cleveland and Ermine (Frost) Mitchell, born icon Nov. 15, 1934, in Monroe, La.

Emile served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater. He worked as a general foreman for Kaiser Aluminum and T.C. Systems. Emile moved to the Punta Gorda area from Michigan in 2003.

Emile will be greatly missed by his fiancée, Janice Yortin; daughter, Laura (Mike) Carter; sons, Joe Mitchell and Scott Mitchell; sisters, Debra (Ronnie) Meredith and Elaine (Tony) Johnson; seven grandchildren; six nephews and one niece.

Robert A. Williams

Robert A. Williams, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Robert was born icon Oct. 3, 1921, in Georgetown, Ill., to Kelly Williams and Ola Howard-Williams.

Robert served his country as a U.S. Marine aircraft mechanic in the South Pacific. After his military tour, he enjoyed a successful career with the VA in his main specialty, machine mechanics. Robert moved to Punta Gorda in 1968 from Georgetown. He enjoyed fishing, yard work and sports. Robert was a former deacon at Tri-City Baptist Church in Port Charlotte, as well as a parishioner at Peace River Baptist Church in Punta Gorda.

A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, with full military honors at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda. The Rev. Thomas Hughes will be presiding.
