Mr. Edward Thomas Petrus
Edward Thomas Petrus, 86, Bradenton, passed away Oct. 28, 2012. He was born
on January 23, 1926 in Scranton, PA to the late Frank and Lottie (Maciejko) Petrus. He was raised in Lowville, NY. Edward entered the U.S. Army in 1943 at the age of 17 years old. He served during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, serving his country faithfully until 1964. Following his military service he worked as a truck drive and logger until his retirement. He resided in Lowville, NY with his wife and spent the winter months in Bradenton, FL. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 10141 in Bradenton, the American Legion Post 24 in Lowville, NY, and the Marine Corp League Detachment 588 in Bradenton. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Spending time with family and friends was his passion. Edward was a friend to one and all. Known as ‘’Big Ed’’ and ‘’Pa’’. Edward was predeceased by his brothers; Frank Petrus, Sr., and Harold Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ora Jean VanCour of Bradenton, two children; Edward Frank Petrus of Glenfield, NY, Yvonne (Kevin) Houppert of Glenfield, NY, four grandchildren; Emily and Amanda Petrus, Olivia and Nicholas Houppert, step-grandchildren; Corey, Kristi, and Derek (Stacey) Houppert, great-granddaughter, Ashton Houppert, multiple nieces and nephews. Dr. James Dean Calhoun
Dr. James Dean Calhoun, 87, Bradenton, passed away on October 28, 2012. He was born
on February 8, 1925 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania to the late James Clarence and Lavina (Dunlap) Calhoun. Dr. James served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He attended and graduated from the Franklin & Marshall University in Lancaster, PA with a Bachelor’s Degree. Following his graduation he taught in the Pittsburgh School System, then went to teach at Wheaton High School in Silver Springs, MD, and then at the Aha O’Nale Academy in Honolulu, HI, Oahu school. He then returned to school attending Penn State and received his Doctorate Degree in Education. He then taught graduate ED Psy. Admin. Classes at Radford University for over 20 years. He was a member and past-president of the National Educators Association. He moved to Florida in 1989 settling in Rotunda West coming from Virginia until moving to Bradenton in 2003. Dr. James was predeceased by his brother Charlie Calhoun and sister Leigh. Survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Glenna Jewel McGee Calhoun of Bradenton, one son Jeffry Dean Calhoun and his wife Sharon of Worthington, OH, daughter, Patti Verleigh McCune and her husband, Richard of Hull, GA, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A celebration of Dr. James’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Westminster Shores, 1700 3rd Avenue West, Bradenton. Committal services will take place at 2:30 P.M. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota with final military honors by the United States Marine Corps Honor Detail. Vera Estella Scott, 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on Oct. 29, 2012 at the Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA. She was born
on November 9, 1924 in Wayne, Ohio to the late William and Elizabeth (Van Horn) Dudgeon. She was the former manager of the Plantation Village Mobile Home Park in Bradenton. Her church memberships include the Bradenton Church of Christ in Bradenton, Florida, and the Murphy Church of Christ in Murphy, North Carolina. Vera was predeceased by her husband Derwin W. Scott in 1983, two brothers; Harley and Burleigh Dudgeon, and a three sisters, Sylvia Lancaster, Ilo Riley and Burl Barrington. She is survived by three daughters; Barbara and Gary Calvert of Smyrna, GA, Betty and Hugh Warwick of Sautee, GA, Linda Huntoon of Murphy, NC, one sister, Mary Lou Merrick of Bradenton, FL,four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 7-9 P.M. at the Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton. Barbara Anne Burns, 69 of Bradenton, passed away in her home on Oct. 27, 2012. She was born
in Newark, NY. Barbara was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She was a true friend to many. Barbara is survived by her daughter Pam DeSando, sons, John & Jeff Burns, brothers, Ronald, Robert and Raymond VanDeWalle, and five grandchildren; Nicholas & Samantha DeSando, Christopher, Zoe & Zane Burns. A memorial gathering will be held from 4-6 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012 in the Lakeside South Clubhouse, 3817 40th Ave. W., Bradenton. Mrs. Magdaline M. Kelly
Magdaline M. Kelly, 83, Bradenton, passed away October 20, 2012. She was born
on July 28, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Harry W. and Beatrice (Koviac) Lewis. Magdaline was a devout Presbyterian serving as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania and was a deacon and loyal parishioner of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bradenton. She moved to Florida in 1979 coming from Pittsburgh settling for a while in St. Petersburg and then moving to Bradenton. Magdaline was predeceased by her two beloved husbands; Rev. William C. Cook and Rev. Eugene D. Kelly and is survived by her four loving daughters; Betty Lyn Angelini and Patricia Ann Collier both of Slippery Rock, PA, Terri Lee Cook of Charlotte, NC, Tracy Sue Cook of St. Petersburg, FL, two brothers; Dale Lewis and Gene Lewis, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of Magdaline’s Life was held in the Chapel of the Westminster Shores. Further services and inurnment will take place at a later date in Pennsylvania. Mr. Richard Carl Kowal
Richard Carl Kowal, 86 of Bradenton, passed away Oct. 12, 2012. He was born
on Jan. 31, 1926 in Cicero, IL to the late Samuel and Bessie (Hosndel). He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired as a bank officer with Harris Trust and Savings in Chicago with almost 40 years of service. He moved to Holmes Beach in 1985 coming from LaGrange Park and St. Charles, IL, and was a member of the West Bay Cove Condo. Assoc. for 20 years, member of the American Legion Kirby Stewart Post # 24 of Bradenton, and was a active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, and most recently St. Joseph Catholic Church after moving to Bradenton in November of 2011. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and taught each of his grandchildren to fish. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Marjorie (Mauck) of Bradenton, beloved father of William (Laura) of Arlington Heights, IL, Peggy (Doug) Fisher of Westmont, IL,, Mary Kay (Mick) Callaghan of Chicago, IL, Carol (Dale) Costantino of Naperville, IL, Nancy Mikeworth of Woodridge, IL, and cherished grandfather of 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date and time in the Chicago area with inurnment at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL. Deborah Courtney, 59, Bradenton, she was called home Oct. 12, 2012. She was born
Oct. 30, 1952 in Hayti, MO to the late Denver C. Cates and Eva Mae (Thomas) Lafferty. She moved to Bradenton in 1971. She is survived by her husband, Raden, one brother, Henry Lafferty, Jr., of Ellenton, one sister, Crystal Bartholomew of Palmetto, her loving niece and nephews; Evany, Myles and Khai. Visitation Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 from 6-8 P.M. at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton. Services Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. CDR James E. Whiting-Retired USCG, PE, 61, of Grasonville, MD, passed away Oct. 5, 2012. He was born
on Nov. 30, 1950 in Dallas, TX to the late George and Love (McKinstry) Whiting. CDR. Whiting served and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard with 22 years of service. He worked as Professional Engineer, and was working for Rolls Royce as a Naval Architect at the time of his passing. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Karen of Grasonville, MD, three sons; Michael (Kim) of Rockledge, FL, James (Mira) of Arlington, MA, Daniel of Myakka City, Fl., two daughters; Rebecca (Rev. Larry) White of Myakka City, Fl., Darlene (Frank) Peña of Homestead, FL., one brother, Luke (Eileen) of Weston, FL, two sisters; Mary Love (Bill) VanDyke, and Joyce (Randy) Pickering both of Titusville, Fl., and eight grandchildren. Bruck Holman Kirby, 63, Bradenton, passed away Oct. 7, 2012. He was born
June 4, 1949 to the late Wickliffe and Helen (Holman) Kirby. Bruck served as a Corporal with the U.S. Marine Corps Air Wing. He held many elustrious positions during his lifetime, by owning his own tile company, worked in real estate, and was the Executive V.P. of Manufacturing for Extend-O-Drain. Bruck is survived by his two sons; Bruck Elliot Christopher Kirby and Bret Alexander Todd Kirby both of Thomasville, GA, brother; Wick Kirby of Naperville, IL, and many extended family members and close friends. on November 13, 1937 in Owensboro, KY to the late Fred and Mary Edwina (Mattingly) Loyd. Mrs. Simmons retired from the Bausch-Lomb Company in Florida working in the contact lens department. She was predeceased by her husband Donald R. Simmons, Sr. in 2000 and is survived by three sons, Donald R. Jr., Terry, Brian, daughter, Pamela D. Boyd, three brothers, James Robert, Spaulding Gene, Ernest Loyd, three sisters; Mary Blanche Pullin, Ann Evelyn Loyd, Patricia Fay Case, five grandchildren; Terry L. Simmons, Jr., Christiana and Daniell Simmons, Brittany and Rebecca Boyd, and two great-grandchildren, Dustian and Tristan. A memorial Celebration of Hattie L. Robert N. Mallery, 77, Palmetto, passed away Feb. 6, 2013. Robert was born
Dec. 20, 1935 in Wadsworth, OH to the late Robert and Carrie (Blough) Mallery. He was a graduate of the Ritttman H.S. Class of 1954 in Rittman, OH, and served with the U.S. Army during peacetime between Korea Conflict and Vietname War. He worked as an agent with the Motorist Insurance Company in OH. Robert moved to Manatee County in 1998 with his late wife Charlotte, coming from Boardman, OH. He was also an avid poker player. He is survived by his three sons; Brett of Japan, Brian Jones of Phoenix, AZ, Phillip of Medina, OH, three daughters; Theresa Monson of Westminster, CO, Kimberly Jones of Exton, PA Kimberly Sherman of Jacksonville, FL, three sisters; Sandra Huff of Bradenton, Rita Amstutz and Janice Wilson both of Orrville, OH, and eight grandchildren. Cheryl (Burn, Parker) Morgan, 59, Bradenton, passed away Jan. 30, 2013. She was born
on Feb. 8, 1953 in Bradenton to the late Edward and Doris (Snapp) Parker and was a life long resident. Cheryl was a member of the Friends of Bill, Manatee Baptist Church and Bayside Community Church all of Bradenton. She was working as a bookkeeper with West Coast Southern Medical. She was predeceased by her step-father Walter Burn and is survived by her son, David (Melissa) Morgan III, grandson, David Morgan IV all of Bradenton and a sister, Vicki (Don) Ray of Parrish. Rosa M. Nalley Blanchard, 61, Bradenton, was carried away by angels on January 18, 2013. She was born
in Tampa, Florida on June 24, 1951 to Bert Lee and Doretha (Herbold) Nalley. She was a member of the Kononia Missionary Baptist Church, and drove a school bus for the Sarasota School District. Survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Charlie Langston, daughter, Connie Tilley, three step-children, Clinton, Lawrence and Cathy, three sisters; Diane Bedwell, Shirley Radden, and Sandy Barrett, three brothers; John, Marvin and Frank Herbold, four grandchildren; Regina and Anthony Tilley, Jeffrey and Willie Smith, one great-grandchild Benjamin Junior, three nieces; Lisa, Karey, Brandi, three nephews; David, Billy, Frank and a host of cousins and many extended family members and friends. Rosa will be cremated and per her wishes there will be no services. Rosa, you will be missed. We all love you.

Ruth M. Kahnweiler, 89, of Lake Forest, Illinois, died peacefully in her sleep on January 24, 2013 in Bradenton, FL. Born in Chicago on April 9, 1923 to Bess and Isadore Markus, she is survived by Louis Kahnweiler, her loving husband of 69 years, children Nancy Randall, (Ben), Bill Kahnweiler (Jennifer), and Kathy Kahnweiler (who shared her mom's birthday) and her adored grandchildren, Lindsey Goldberg (Adam), Jeffrey Randall, Jessie Kahnweiler, Nicholas Randall, and Katy Randall. "Ruthie" radiated warmth everywhere and showed deep compassion and kindness to the hundreds of friends who were drawn to her loving and open heart. A voracious reader with a keen intellect, she brought vibrant energy and an understated sense of humor to every discussion. Ruth spent over 47 years as a loyal and respected Highland Park Hospital volunteer and despite her humility and jokes about "saving lives," she demonstrated a strength of character that belied her small stature. "Ruthie" will be remembered as a woman of the world who was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. A memorial service in Chicago will be announced at a later date. Samuel Raymond Thompson, 62, Myakka City, passed away Jan. 21, 2013. Samuel was born
in St. Petersburg and was the owner of Thompson Brothers Pool Finishers, Inc. Survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra, son, Toby, daughter, Shelby, and six grandchildren. Mr. Richard Lock
Richard Lock (72) of Sarasota left this world on January 20, 2013 to be with his Lord, with his loving family near him, ending his battle with cancer. Richard was born
on July 11, 1940 to the late James and Ruth (Burton) Lock. Richard was a decorated Vietnam veteran and he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor. He was a devoted patriot, whose love for his country was second only to God and his family. He served with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force National Guard. He was an active member in his church and never missed an opportunity to help his fellow man. His devotion and kindness to others was an example for all. A loving and devoted husband to his wife Peggy for 48 years and loving father to his three sons, Dwayne (Teresa), Bryan (Theresa) and Keith (Amy), He is also survived by his brother, Howard of Long Beach, MS, sister, Alice Sanders of Michigan City, IN, and his four grandchildren, Kendall, Cameron, Ashley and Jessica Lock. He will be greatly missed and has left an indelible impression on so many lives. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wed. Joyce Katherine Dalzell, 83, Sarasota, passed away Jan. 12, 2013. She was born
Oct. 23, 1929 in Punta Gorda, FL, to the late Fred A. and Ione (Jones) House. Raised in Sarasota since age 2, she also lived in California for 10 years and in various cities in central Florida, returning to Sarasota for retirement. She worked as an accountant for 4 years with Miller Trailers, 4 years with Ringling Brothers, and as owner of a clothing boutique. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Carl Dalzell, her sisters, Betty Hawthorne and Peggy House and is survived by her children, Jeffery Carl of Sarasota, Kelli Margaret of St. Augustine, FL, brothers, David Ned and Ronnie House of Sarasota, grandchildren, Cameron and Ella, nieces, Linda Elliott Taber of Hawaii and Victoria Spencer of Bradenton, and nephews, Mark Elliott and Charles Cucknell, both of Sarasota.
