Mr. Vance was born in Porterville, Missouri and moved to Ft. Pierce in 1959 coming from Bakersfield, California.
He was a grove foreman for many years in the Treasure Coast area. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He operated the peanut stand for many years at the old Tote-A-Poke Grocery on Okeechobee Road in Ft. Pierce, and he also loved to fish.
Survivors include his sons, Jackie & Gene Vance both of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughters, Mickie Jones of St. Cloud, FL, and Linda Smallwood of North Carolina; sisters, Marie Grade and Jeannie Grovez both of Newark, CA; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and he was preceded in death by his brother, Aubrey and sister Bonnie May.

He was a native of Hagerstown, MD; he grew up in Washington, DC and came here from North Palm Beach, FL in 1978.
Prior to retirement he was a Chief Airport Traffic Controller at Palm Beach International Airport from 1948-1959. Subsequently he served overseas as an International Aviation Services Officer in Europe, Asia, Central, and South America and the Caribbean while on assignment to the US State Department. He received commendations from the governments of Thailand, Greece, Peru, and Brazil.
Concluding his overseas assignments he was awarded a Sustained Superior Performance Award by the Federal Aviation Agency.
Claybourne served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines Corps. He attended Maryland University, National University, and the FAA Academy at Oklahoma City.
Survivors include his sons, Michael and wife Jean of Huntsville, AL, and Stephen and wife Helen of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances.
