Evelyn (Lynn) Cheney Viers
August 20, 1956 - June 14, 2008
Evelyn (Lynn) Cheney Viers, 51, DeLand, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Hospice Care Center in Orange City from cancer. Lynn was born in Palatka, FL on August 20, 1956, to Fred and Patricia Cheney. She grew up in DeBary, attended public schools and graduated from DeLand High School in 1975.
She worked at Stromberg-Carlson in Lake Mary for many years prior to her complete devotion to her family. Lynn enjoyed making ceramics, cooking, collecting cookbooks, attending art shows and family entertaining. She was well known for keeping track of and mailing cards to many friends and family for birthdays and anniversaries.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 28 years, James Viers, DeLand; daughters, Melanie and her husband, Shannon Prue of DeLand, and Tiffany and her husband, Chris Lopez of Umatilla; son, Thomas Viers of DeLand; grandchildren, Maya and Zoey Prue and Christany Lopez; parents, Fred and Pat Cheney of DeBary; brothers, David Cheney and wife, Margie of Shalimar, FL, John Cheney and wife, Amy of DeLand and Jack Cheney and wife, Lucy of DeLand; sister, Janis Tipton and husband, Chris of Lake Helen, FL; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the U.S.A. and her beloved poodle, Diana.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand with the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating. Donations may be made in Lynn's memory to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
Walter Donald Wassell
February 10, 1939 - June 20, 2008
Funeral service for Walter Donald Wassell, 69, Orange City, who died June 20, 2008, in Houston, Texas , will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008, at the Volusia County Baptist Church, Orange City, with Reverend John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Boynton Beach Memorial Park. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, at Volusia County Baptist Church. military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force at the interment in Boynton Beach.
Mr. Wassell was a CMsgt, retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service. He was born in Waynesboro, VA. He enjoyed hunting and camping.
Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, a son and daughter-in-law, one daughter and two granddaughters.
Charles R. Hammel, Sr.
January 19, 1923 - June 21, 2008
Funeral service for Charles R. Hammel Sr., 85, DeLand, who died June 21, 2008, at FloridaHospital DeLand, will be Thursday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at the Alliance Chapel in DeLand. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at the Florida National Cemetery
in Bushnell, FL. Calling hours will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lankford Funeral Home.
Mr. Hammel was born in Altoona, PA and moved here in 2006 from Clifton, NJ. He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was an engineer for the Worthington Corporation for 45 years.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rose Gallo Hammel; two sons, Charles R. Hammel Jr., Austin, Texas
and Richard Allen Hammel, North Caldwell, NJ; one brother, Ralph Hammel, DeLand, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Grace T. Horan
July 2, 1920 - June 23, 2008
Service for Grace T. Horan, 87, Winter Springs, who passed away June 23, 2008, at Arden Court, Winter Springs, FL, will be 3:00 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Avenue, DeLand, FL. Daniel J. Wolf will officiate. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Horan was born in Daytona Beach and moved back to the area in 1953 from Dalton, GA. She retired as a rregistered nurse. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, George Horan, brothers Howard "Nappy" Tharnhardt and Frederisk "Fredie" Tharnhart, both of whom lived in New Smyrna Beach and a sister, Fannie Intemann who lived in Ormond Beach, FL. Survivors include her three sons, Robert E. (Debra) Horan of Tampa, FL with grandchild Daniel, J. Duane (Betsi) of DeLand with grandchildren Helen and Katherine and Richard B. Horan of DeLand; one daughter, Patti (Jeff) Johnson of Oviedo, FL with grandchildren, Brian, Kelli and Trey.

Sallee Hardy
December 3, 1930 - June 24, 2008
Sallee Hardy, Secluded Oaks Trail, died June 24, 2008 at her home with her family at her side. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at First Congregational Church of Orange City, 201 W. University Avenue, in Orange City.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA she and her late husband, Neal J. Hardy, moved here in 1990. She began her journalistic career writing a weekly column for the Erie Dispatch on activities at Maryhurst Seminary for girls. She was employed by the Associated Press, NAHB homebuilders magazine and was the founding editor of the Housing and Urban Affairs Daily Newspaper. For several years she wrote the History is Alive column, for the News-Journal.
Active in League of Women Voters; served as President of the Chelsea-Greenwich Village League; served five years as a Non Governmental Observer, for the International Association for Religious Freedom at the United Nations; employed by the Democratic Headquarters, for the Lyndon B. Johnson Campaign; staff of the late Senator Joseph Clark D-PA; served as an Assistant to Dr. Leo Szilard, the father of the atomic bomb, helping to sort his records prior to moving to California from Washington , DC; Board member and Past President West Volusia Historical Society; recipient of West Volusia Historian of the Year; Life Member and former Board Member Orange City Library Association; former President of Orange City Cemetary Association; volunteer for American Cancer Society Research for Recovery; Board Member Afro-American Museum.
She is survived by her son, Scott L. Bashaw; stepsons, John Hardy and Van Hardy; beloved grandson, Kyle Bashaw and her cherised cocker spaniel, Sir Winston and innumerable friends, including Joanna McNeese, who provided for her care.
Elizabeth Ann Thompson
April 20, 1943 - July 1, 2006
Memorial Service for Elizabeth Ann Thompson, 65, DeLand, who died July 1, 2008 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Orange City, FL, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5 at Hospice Care Center in Orange City, with Chaplain Andy Pollock officiating.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Mancheser, NH and moved to this area in 1986 from her birthplace. She was self employed in Home Health Care for over 20 years. She was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges, and enjoyed oil painting and cooking and her family.
Survivors include her two daughters, Cathi Montgomery of Orange City, FL and Marlene Scofield of Bedford, New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Kyle Montgomery and Cody Montgomery, both of Orange City, FL.

Mildred W. Hunt

Graveside service for Mildred W. Hunt, 102, DeLand, who died July 4, 2008 at Oakwood Garden of DeLand, FL, will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Oakdale Cemetery, DeLand, FL with the Rev. Trall Heitzenrater officiating.
Mrs. Hunt was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and moved to this area in 1951 from Titusville, New Jersey. A retired teacher, Mrs. Hunt worked as a substitute teacher in DeLand and Lake Helen for a number of years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in DeLand.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Earle R. Hunt, Sr. and her son, Ronald W. Hunt. Survivors include one son, Earle R. Hunt, Jr. of DeLand, FL; one brother, Melvin Wooden of Lambertville, NJ; granddaughter, Missy Hall; grandson, Buster Hunt; granddaughter, Susan Moore; granddaughter, Marlene Henderson; grandson, Robert Hunt; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rowena Florence Kurtz
June 22, 1911 - July 4, 2008
Memorial Service for Rowena Florence Kurtz, 97, DeLand, who died July 4, 2008 at Florida Hospital, will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8 at St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand. Burial will be in Sarasota, FL at the convenience of the family.
Mrs. Kurtz was born June 22, 1911 in Detroit, MI. She was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker. She happily attended Stay For The Day Adult Care in Orange City where she had many friends.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan E. and son-in-law, Gary M. Palmer, DeLand; her daughter, Patricia A. McClellan of Port Charlotte, FL; four grandchildren, Cheryl and husband, Brad Peters, Christopher and wife, Raiza McClellan, Teresa and husband, Bryan Williams, Maureen and husband, Tony Roma; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

William L. Kellner
November 16, 1937 - July 6, 2008
William L. Kellner, 70, DeLand, died July 6, 2008 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Orange City, FL. Mr. Kellner was born in Passaic, New Jersey and moved to this area in 2004 from California. He was an Educator in Education who taught middle school to college classes. He received a Master's Degree from Montclair College in Montclair, New Jersey. He enjoyed working with animal rights organizations, especially for cats. He also enjoyed old cars and his 1948 jaguar.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Anne Kellner, DeLand; one son, David S. Kellner of Brooklyn, New York and one grandson, Matthew B. Kellner of Brooklyn, New York.

Alice C. Spinelli
April 17, 1919 - July 7, 2008
Alice C. Spinelli, "Mema", 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday, July 7, 2008. Alice was born on April 17, 1919 in Saratoga Springs, NY where she lived for 74 years. She spent the rest of her life in DeBary, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John and is survived by her children, Rosemary Spinelli of DeBary, FL, Paul (Eileen) Spinelli of Queensbury, NY and John (Sophie) Spinelli of Newburg, IN; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by her family as well as the many other people she touched throughout her life. Alice never knew a stranger and opened her heart and her home to all those who needed a hot meal, a helping hand or a kind word. The world is a smaller place without her.
