WILLIE MAE 'BILLIE' SMITH
After living through 84 eventful years of American history, Billie passed away in Panama City in the home in which she had lived since 1949. She was born the second of four daughters (Helen, Billie, Louise, and Bitsie) to Cecil and Willie Mae King. The family lived, laughed and played together, while the daughters grew up in small southern towns. In 1938, Billie married a young Howard Noland, who became a B-26 medium bomber pilot in World War II. She became a widow when he crashed in England in September 1944. Their only daughter, Belle (Noland) Casler was born two months later. In 1946, she married an Air Force pilot, Bill Smith, who was to be her dancing partner and life's companion until his death in 1994. Billie was an accomplished homemaker with extraordinary talents for cooking, sewing, and gardening. She spent the last years of her life in her garden, trying to make her corner of the world a more beautiful place for herself and her neighbors. Billie is gone, but she left a great gift. America is a better place because of the two outstanding, caring citizens that she left behind as her grandsons, Bryan and Jay Hancock, and the extended families they each represent. The family would like to express its appreciation to Carlin Balkom and Linda Rogers for the loving care they gave her. We are also grateful to the caregivers and staff of Covenant Hospice, as well as Dr. Denley, for their compassionate care and for providing the gift of dignity in her death. Family visitation will be between the hours of 5 until 7 p.m. at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home today, Dec. 4, 2001. Father Denis Baum will officiate at a graveside service which will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, where she will be buried next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Covenant Hospice, 2589 Jenks Ave., Panama City, FL 32405, would be appreciated.
