Mr. John W. McCormick, 77, of Panama City, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at a local hospital. He was a native of Portland, Maine, and had lived in Panama City for six years. Mr. McCormick retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and later retired after 25 years as a building inspector for civil service. He also worked as a building inspector for private corporations throughout Asia, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. Mr. McCormick is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann McCormick of Panama City, Fla.; a son, Thomas M. McCormick and his wife Violet of Wahiawa, Hawaii; two sisters, Harriet Masalin of Linconville, Maine, and Faith Ricci of South Portland, Maine; and three grandchildren, Angela Hansen and Justine Hansen, both of Panama City, and Thomas M. McCormick Jr. of Wahiawa, Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yung Ja McCormick.

JACOB 'JAKE' POPE
Mr. Jacob "Jake" Pope, 89, of 817 E. Eighth Court, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in a local hospital. He was a native of Jackson County and a resident of Panama City for many years. Funeral services for Mr. Pope will be held today, Oct. 10, at noon in the Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. O.C. Williams, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the Church today from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will receive relatives and friends at 817 E. Eighth Court.

CECIL TOWNSEND
Mr.Cecil Townsend, 84, of Southport, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Oct. 8, 2001, at a local nursing home. Mr. Townsend was born in Lynn, Ala., and moved to this area in 1943 from Michigan. Cecil had been a house builder and many of the local homes were built by him. He also had worked at an automobile plant in Michigan for many years. Cecil was a real Christian, and loved the Lord his Savior. He was a member of the Amazing Grace Lutheran Church. Cecil will be welcomed to heaven by his one sister, and his adoring grandson, David. He is survived by his wife of 65 wonderful years, Thelma H. Townsend of Southport, Fla.; one son, Gary Townsend Sr. (Karen) of Lynn Haven, Fla.; one daughter, Judy (John) Ringel of Richmond, Mich.; one sister, Alma Townsend of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation for Mr. Townsend will be held today, Oct. 10, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. Pastor Paul Workentine of Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Panama City will join in prayer with the family and friends at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Townsend will be sent to Richmond, Mich., for interment.

Thelma Jean Hedrick Braman, 71, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at her home in Hurricane, Utah. She was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Peoria, Ill., to William and Leanta Hedrick. She was raised and educated in Peoria. Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed crocheting, plastic canvas. She was a member of the Eastern Stars in her younger years and she was a former board member of the Fleet Reserve Association St. Andrews Bay Branch/Unit 346, Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Elivn G. Braman; and her four children, Elivn E. Braman and wife, Jane, Sharon L. Marlar and husband, Richard, Debra L. Corkran and husband, Edward, William W. Braman and wife, Susan; grandchildren, Lauren, Heidi, Emma, Audrey, Bethany and Joshua Braman, Heather Corkran and Emily Braman; and a sister, Barbara L. Tutor. Mr. George Campbell, 82, of Bay County, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at a local hospital. He was a native of Kentucky and had lived in Bay County since 1946. Mr. Campbell was a retired airplane mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an active volunteer at Bayshore Cluster and the United Cerebral Palsy Clinic, the St. Andrew Bay Center, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gertrude Campbell of Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Mildred Blanton of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews, including April Smith and her husband, Curt of Panama City, Fla. He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Campbell in 1997. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at the Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Earl Mirus officiating. Funeral services for Mr. Fred Gaines, 82, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. in Lake City, Fla. He leaves to mourn his passing three sons, Charlie, Robert and Kenny Gaines; daughter, Carylon Gaines; grandson, Marquis; one brother, Henry Gaines of Panama City; and one sister, Clara McGee of Lynn Haven. John Henry Guy Sr., 80, of 718 Oak Ave., Panama City, died at his home Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001. He was born in Lanett, Ala., on Dec. 30, 1920. He had been a resident of Panama City since 1951. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and civil service at Tyndall Air Force Base. Mr. Guy was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Shaddai Shrine Temple, Acme Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite of Panama City. The family takes joy in knowing that John will now be reunited with the love of his life, Elizabeth, his wife of 39 years who passed away in 1990. Mr. Guy is survived by three children, Beth Guy of Panama City, John Guy and his wife, Nancy, of Apple Valley, Minn., Jane (C.J.) Anderson of Southport; three grandchildren, Cortnee Anderson, Sara Anderson, both of Southport, and Noah Guy of Apple Valley. Mr. Guy will be remembered by many for his years of playing Santa Claus at Wal-Mart on 23rd Street. Mr. Guy always said "A man never stood so tall as when he stooped down low to help a child." Tracy Weaver, 38, of Panama City, Fla., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at her residence. She was born and raised in Iowa and was a Florida resident for the past five years. In her life she worked with the public in many areas and served her country in the U.S. Army. Preceding her in death was her mother, Norma Scharpman. She is survived by her father, Elmer Scharpman; her two sons, Billy and Brian Abel; one brother, Keith Allen Scharpman and his wife, Katrina, all of Fort Madison, Iowa; two sisters, Bobbie Pressiner and her husband, Robert of Mountain Home, Ark., and Brenda Crum and her husband, Randy of Panama City; one uncle, Donald Mabry of Mountain Home; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mary Packwood Bowden, 85, of Altha, died Thursday morning at her home. Mrs. Bowden was born in Betts, Fla., and was store manager for Bowden's Appliance in Altha. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 179, and a member of the Altha First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Bowden, and her grandson, Scott Bennett Bowden. Survivors include two sons, Billy D. Bowden of Orange Park and Pack Bowden of Altha; two daughters, Mary Jean Creamer and June Smith, both of Altha; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Marie Coiner, 66, of Lynn Haven, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at a local hospital. She was a native of Luverne, Ala., and had lived in Bay County for 45 years. Mrs. Coiner was a retired teacher's aide for 18 years with Bay District Schools, working at Cove Elementary, Cherry Street Elementary, and Lucille Moore Elementary schools. She was a charter member of the Northside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. Mrs. Coiner is survived by her husband of 47 years, Richard Coiner of Lynn Haven, Fla.; two sons, Rickey Coiner and Mickey Coiner, both of Panama City; her mother, Mittie B. EDDIE ELIZABETH HENDRIX
Mrs. Eddie Elizabeth Hendrix, 74, died Oct. 8, 2001, in Decatur Hospital in Atlanta. She was born in Waycross, Ga., on March 12, 1927, one of 13 children. She and her husband, Gordon Hendrix, moved to the Panhandle from Georgia in 1944. Eddie lived in Panama City until moving to Atlanta. She worked for Sears, the city of Panama City, and Jones Greenhouse before moving to Atlanta. In Atlanta, she worked for in the Woodruff P.E. Center at Emory University before retiring in 1995. She was a favorite of the students and faculty who knew her. Mrs. Hendrix is survived by her sons, Ronnie Hendrix, James Hendrix, and Phil Hendrix, all of Atlanta; siblings, Omar King and his wife Dorothy, Birmingham, Ala.,Cecil Carter and her husband Calfrey, Anderson, S.C., Larry King, Lakeland, Fla., Harold King, Waycross, Ga., Anna Dean King, Fernandina Beach, Fla., brother Wayne King, Montana, Helen and her husband Loy Bennett, Waycross, Ga.; grandchildren, Jay Hendrix, Auburn, Ala., Lewis and Jennifer Comacho, Auburn, Ala., Erin, Kelsey, and Ryan Hendrix, of Atlanta, Ga., and great-grandchildren, Katy and Thomas Comacho, of Auburn, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Peggy Hendrix of Atlanta; niece and brother-in-law, Debbie and Horace Lewis, Jacksonville, Fla.; and niece, Cheryl King, Birmingham, Ala..
