Nancy M. Shadick

Memorial service for Nancy M. Shadick, 71, Buford Avenue, Orange City, who died at home on Thursday, December 15, 2005, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, with Deacon Bob LaPlante officiating.
Mrs. Shadick was born in Wayland, NY and moved to this area in 1970 from Rochester. She was a homemaker. She was a nationally accredited flower show judge and also held a position as a nationally known instructor in horticulture. Locally, she held many positions in the Garden Club, DeLand. She was a member of the Sandspur Circle of the Garden Club of DeLand. She was a member of the St. Peter's Catholic Church, DeLand.
Survivors include her sons, David Shadick of DeLand, Michael Shadick of Orange City and granddaughter, Elizabeth Frances Shadick.

Rev. Walter G. Pister
July 3, 1905 - December 15, 2005
The Rev. Walter G. Pister, 100, of West Armstrong Avenue, a retired pastor and missionary, died Thursday at Alliance Center for Heath Care. Rev. Pister was born in Philadelphia and moved to DeLand in 1986 from Orange City. He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Survivors include a son, Walter Pister Jr., of Orange City; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Josiah Winfield Varney, Jr.
March 20, 1924 - December 15, 2005
Josiah Winfield Varney Jr., 81, of Hanover Road, the retired owner/operator of Varney's Cleaning and Laundry, Rochester, NH, died Thursday at Florida Hospital DeLand. Mr. Varney, a Navy veteran of World War II, who served as a Seabee, was born in Newmarket, NH. He moved to this area in 1981 from Rochester. He was a member of the F&AM Humane Lodge No. 21 and the Kiwanis, Rochester.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anita; three sons, Peter of Rocky Mount, NC, Thomas of Alton, NH and James of Dover, NH; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Margaret M. Phelps
August 5, 1917 - December 14, 2005
Margaret M. Phelps, 88, of Florian Lake Drive, a resident since 1956, died Wednesday at Ridgecrest Manor. Mrs. Phelps, a homemaker, moved to this area from her native Rome, NY. She was a member of Dayspring Community Church.
Survivors include a niece, Linda Touten and a sister-in-law, Nicolena Touten, both of Daytona Beach, and both of whom provided for her care.
Ruth E. Shehan
May 31, 1923 - December 13, 2005
Ruth E. Shehan, 82, of Chipola Avenue, who worked for Eastman Kodak Co. for 24 years in the textile division, died Tuesday at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center. Born in Green County, TN, Mrs. Shehan came here in 1986 from Kingsport, TN. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Dominic M. Rischenole
August 20, 1915 - December 12, 2005
Dominic M. Rischenole, 90, of Spring Lake Drive, who retired after 55 years as owner/operator of Dewey's Grocery's, Rochester, NY, died Monday at Ridgecrest Manor. Mr. Rischenole moved to this area in 1986 from his native Rochester. He attended St. Peters Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; seven sons, Charles, Daniel and Frederick Rischenole, Dennis McFiggins and Timothy McFiggins, all of Rochester, David McFiggins of North Carolina and Thomas McFiggins of San Diego; six daughters, Donna Schaubroeck, Kathleen DeFraime, and Lorri Hyder, all of Rochester, Sharyn Sinopoli of DeLand, Charlene D'Ambra of Las Vegas, and Sandra Arnold of Thousand Oaks, CA; 32 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Pauline Henger
April 7, 1920 - December 11, 2005
Pauline Henger, 85, of Blue Heron Boulevard, who retired with over 20 years of service as an office supply sales clerk, McKeesport, PA, died Sunday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City. Mrs. Henger was born in Glassport, PA and moved to this area in 1977 from McKeesport. She attended Osteen Methodist Church and was a member of the Cove Estates Association, Osteen. She enjoyed playing bridge and bingo.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth McMillen of Media, PA and Linda Bluemle of Pittsburgh, PA; three brothers, Orrin and Glen Hall, both of Liberty Boro, PA and Thomas Hall of Chesterton, IN; a sister, Edna Hoyt, Williams of Oregon and three grandchildren.

Ross "Rick" Szell
September 25, 1946 - December 10, 2005
Ross "Rick" Szell, 59, of Westwood Avenue in DeLand, passed away Saturday, December 10th at his home. Mr. Szell was born in Silver Creek, NY and moved to this area in 1958 from Buffalo, NY. He was a graduate of Rollins College and earned his Masters Degree from St. Johns College. He served in the US Navy.
Mr. Szell worked with Orange County Law Enforcement for several years and held the position of Security Supervisor for Valencia Community College.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Carolyn; five sons, Christopher Szell of Orange City, FL, Richard Szell of Daytona Beach, FL, Jeffery Sutherland of Miami, FL, Ted Sutherland of DeLand, FL and Bill Sutherland of Blanchester, OH; daughter, Stacey Kuhlmey of Daytona Beach, FL; sister, June Szell Beary of Casselberry, FL; 11 grandchildren; nephews, Kevin, Richard and Randy Beary and niece, Noel Beary.

Mass of Burial for Lester William Marion, 92, Barrington Avenue, DeLand, who died Saturday, December 10, 2005, at Florida Hospital, DeLand, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 14 at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Father Tom Connery officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, at Lankford Funeral Homes and Crematory, 220 E. New York Avenue, DeLand.
Mr. Marion was born in Pompton Lakes, NJ and moved to this area in 1976 from Delray Beach. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, the American Legion, DeLand Elks Lodge #1463 and Southridge Golf Course. Mr. Marion was the owner of Marion's Auto Repair in Delray Beach. Mr. Marion served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Mary Jane Marion of DeLand; brother, Leonard Decker of DeLand; daughters, Virginia Mary Lewandowski of Port Orange, Patricia Harder of Free Union, VA and Mary Trometer of Valley Forge, PA; son, Timothy Trometer of Waldo; six grandchildren; nieces, Connie Bagus and Patty Preston; nephew, Doug Stanley; and godsons, Rocky Kaiser and Owen Somerford.

The family of Dorothy (Dottie) M. Peterson, 67, Wilmhurst Road, DeLand, who died Thursday, December 8, 2005, at Florida Hospital, DeLand, invites their friends to celebrate Dottie's life at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 11, at 5242 Aragon Ave., DeLeon Springs. She was born in Maysville, KY and moved to this area in 1957 from Cincinnati, Ohio. Dottie worked with the Volusia County School Board for 16 years before retiring.
Survivors include her daughter, Patti Richards of DeLeon Springs, son, Pete Peterson of DeLand and seven grandchildren.

Lt. Col. Joseph Edward Patrick McCann

Joseph Edward Patrick McCann, 84, of Blue Heron Village, who retired as a lieutenant colonel after 41 years of service in the Army, died Monday at Alliance Center for Health Care. Mr. McCann was born in Philadelphia and moved to this area in 1985 from Dublin, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, June; a son, Dennis of Dublin, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Shaw and Theresa Stemock, both of Pennsylvania and two grandchildren.
Ray F. Fordham
May 16, 1926 - December 5, 2005
Ray F. Fordham, 79, of South Moon Road, Astor, a retired baker for the Red Owl Bakery in Minnesota, died Monday at Florida Hospital DeLand. Mr. Fordham, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Rentz, GA and moved to this area in 1993 from Pequot Lakes, Minn. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include a sister, Faye Reddish of Jacksonville, FL.
