EDGAR LEO GOODING
Mr. Edgar Leo Gooding, age 88, of 1602 Cherry St., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at a local hospital. He had been a resident of the area since 1964 and was a member of Cove Baptist Church. Mr. Gooding retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant. He was a wonderful and loving father and grandfather. Mr. Gooding is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ellna Gooding of Panama City; daughters, Cecilia Ann Miley and her husband Robert of Houston, Texas, and Carolyn Patterson and her husband Daniel W. of Panama City; a son, Thomas A. Arnold Sr. and his wife Sheila of Marianna; sisters, Lurline Mooney of Panama City and Lucille Miestrelle of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Charlotte Ramsey, Thomas A. Arnold Jr., Teresa Mayo, Michael Henderson, Barbara Beaver and Alex Gooding; and great-grandchildren Daniel Beaver, Chris Edenfield, Sean Edenfield, Charla O'Bryan, Heather Arnold and Victoria Branch. He was preceded in death by a son, Edgar Price Gooding, father of Alex. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Keen officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with military honors accorded by Tyndall AFB Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, July 17, 2001.

WALTER J. 'CAP'N JACK' SUMMERS
Mr. Walter J. "Cap'n Jack" Summers, 60, of 2022 Marvin Ave., Port St. Joe, Fla., died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Birmingham, Ala. Born in Fulton County, Ga., he moved to Port St. Joe in 1987 from Covington, Ga. He was the owner and operator of Cap'n Jacks on Cape San Blas, which he opened in 1990. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Port St. Joe and was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. Cap'n Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Nona Summers; and one sister, Virginia Astin. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Summers of Port St. Joe and beloved companion Co'Co (the chocolate Lab); two sons, Matthew Justin Summers of Pensacola and Justin David Goff of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Nicole Summers Gantt of Panama City; one sister, Margaret S. Thompson of Sharpsburg, Ga.; three grandsons, Cameron Gantt, Austin Gantt and Davin Gantt of Douglasville,Ga.; seven nieces and nephews; 10 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew. Funeral services for Cap'n Jack will be conducted at 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday, July 18, in First Baptist Church of Port St. Joe with the Rev. Brent Vicker and the Rev. David Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hills Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers, Phil Thompson, Ryan Astin, Adam Griffin, Jerry Warren, Scott Baker, Ray Miller, Rush Combs and Justin Goff. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Curry, Dr. Victor Ortega, Gene Abrams, Guy White, Wayne Stevens, Zeke Stevens, Rodney Hall, Ronnie Hudson, Eddie Ranew, John Ford and Paul Herbert. Honorary escorts will be Sgt. Troy Simmons, Chris Buchanan, Larry Hightower and Red Graves. Those who wish may make contributions to the Knights of Columbus "Christmas for Kids" in memory of Cap'n Jack.

PAMELA C. CARROLL
Mrs. Pamela C. Carroll, 59, of Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Louisiana. She was born in Charleston, S.C., and moved here in 1949 from Michigan. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven. Mrs. Carroll is survived by her husband, Dallas E. Carroll Jr.; mother-in-law, Kathleen R. "Susie" Carroll, both of Panama City; three daughters, Roberta Rojas of Tampa, LeeAnne Carroll-Culverson of Bainbridge, Ga., and Kathryn C. Taylor and husband Tommy of Marianna, Fla.; one brother, James H. Crutchfield and wife Judy of Indiatlantic, Fla.; one sister, Gay E. Crutchfield of Lynn Haven; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Carroll will be conducted on Thursday, July 19, at 9 a.m. in Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel with Kenny Carroll and Linda Webb officiating. Interment services will follow at 11 a.m. in Limestone Cemetery in Walton County, Fla. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Daniel E. Culverson, Jim Crutchfield, Matthew Webb, Tony Costello, Erin Gober and Warren R. Gober Jr. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

CREOLA D. CHESTNUT
Mrs. Creola D. Chestnut, 78, of 1410 Illinois Ave., Lynn Haven, died Friday, July 1, 2001, in the Gulf Coast Convalescent Center. She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Butler, Ala., to the late Chase Allen and George Davis. She was educated in the Choctaw County School System. She married Alvin Chestnut on April 3, 1944; they were married 44 years before his death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane; and husband, Elder Alvin Chestnut Sr. She leaves to mourn her sons, George Chaney of Deer Park, Ala.; Oscar (Joanna) Chestnut, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Alvin Chestnut Jr., Lynn Haven, Fla.; Edward A. (Denise) Chestnut, Lynn Haven; Willie C. Chestnut, Lynn Haven; Tommie (Jessica) Chestnut, Butler, Ala.; Robert Chestnut, Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Eddie (Mary) Chestnut; and a host of relatives and friends; special friends, Vanilla and Dave Cromartie, Quanita Mathis, Essie Peterson, Ruth Griffin. Funeral services for Mrs. Chestnut will be held Thursday, July 19, at 1 p.m. in Campbell Temple Holiness Church with Elder David C. Mack II, officiating. Interment will follow in Lynn Haven Community Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home at 1 p.m. A wake service will be held in the Battle Memorial Funeral Home Chapel this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Denise Chestnut at 1416 Minnesota Ave., Lynn Haven.

MILDRED TIDWELL HERIN
Mildred Tidwell Herin, age 79, died Monday, July 16, 2001. Graveside services will be Thursday, July 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. in Macon Memorial Park. Visitation will be held today, July 18, 2001, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hart's Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central Georgia Chapter, 301 Mulberry St., Suite 201, Macon, Ga. 31201. Mrs. Herin is the daughter of the late Charles Clifford Tidwell and Laura Frances Sumner Tidwell of Lizella, Ga. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Herin was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Walter Geeslin Herin Sr. She and her husband were the owner/operators of Macon Transfer, a family operated business since 1915. Survivors are her sons, Richard Paul Herin and Walter Geeslin Herin, both of Macon; daughters, Karen H. Stroud of Douglasville, Ga., and Carol H. Tange of Panama City; Christine Sherrer of Augusta, Ga.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Hart's Mortuary of Macon, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.

Graveside services for Vera Mitchell Hutchison will be held at 10 a.m. today in Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Hononary pallbearers will be the 39ers of First Baptist Church of Panama City. Those desiring to may make a donation to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Panama City or their favorite charity in memory of Vera Mitchell Hutchison.

LEE A. 'SHORTY' McNEILL
Mr. Lee A. "Shorty" McNeill, age 94, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Monday, July 16, 2001, at a local hospital. He was a native of Alliance, Fla., and had lived in Panama City for 59 years. Mr. McNeill was a retired carpenter and a member of Hiland Park Baptist Church, where he attended the Adult Men's Sunday School Class. During World War II, Mr. McNeill was a welding supervisor at the Wainwright Shipyard. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Annie Bell F. McNeill of Panama City, Fla.; a daughter, Joe Ann Petty and her husband Tom of Mossy Head, Fla.; three grandsons, Thomas Lee Petty and his wife Penny of Mt. Airy, Ga., Charles David Petty of Freeport, Fla., and Michael Clarendon Petty of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and three great-granddaughters, Kathleen Petty, Rachel Petty and Victoria Randle. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Pickerill officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, July 20, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m.

JAMES WILLIAM SHIRLEY
James William Shirley, age 80, of Lynn Haven, passed away Monday evening, July 16, 2001, at his home. He was born in Ozark County, Ala., the son of the late John Joseph and Mary Viola Mitchell Shirley. He was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. He had been a resident of this area for the past 70 years. He was a retired bus mechanic with Bay County School Bus Transportation Department. Mr. Shirley had a great love of fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Shirley in 1998; and a daughter, Betty Shirle Howell in 1971. Survivors include his son, John H. Shirley of Ponce de Leon; four daughters, Mae Miller of Glendale, Fla., Virginia Carroll and husband, Wesley of Leonia, Fla., Wilmoth Gorr and husband, Harold of Glendale and Margaret Braddy of Mebane, N.C.; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Shirley's daughter, Virginia, at 1079 Rock Hill Court, Leonia, Fla., beginning at 3 p.m. today, July 18. Floral contributions are accepted.
