Funeral service for R.O. Gnann, 84, DeLand, who died at home Monday, September 3, 2007, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, September 6, at his home, 1290 N. Ridgewood Ave., DeLand. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until service time.
Mr. Gnann was born in Lynne and moved to DeLand in 1978 from Port Orange. He was retired as a heavy equipment supervisor and served in the Merchant Marines. He enjoyed gardening and collecting antique tractors and fire trucks.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Mae Gnann, DeLand; daughter, Dana Parks, Berlin, MD; sister, Louie Belle Ask, Eustis and brother, Robert A. Gnann, Sorrento.
Eleanor L. Packard
August 11, 1925 - August 31, 2007
Eleanor L. Packard, 82, of Strawberry Oaks Drive, a native of Atlanta, died Friday in Savannah Court Assisted Living Facility. Mrs. Packard, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1992 from Miami. Survivors include a friend, Thelma Crippen, Orange City, who helped provide for her care.
Violeta Acevedo
April 4, 1921 - August 31, 2007
Violeta Acevedo, 86, of Howland Boulevard, a retired nurse, died Friday at home. Mrs. Acevedo was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico and moved here in 1990 from her birthplace. Survivors include a son, Enrique, New York; a daughter, Ana Marcial, Deltona; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Clare Matsey
November 19, 1919 - August 27, 2007
Clare Matsey, 87, of South Leon Avenue, a native of Ellwood City, PA died Monday at home. Mrs. Matsey, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1977 from Gary, IN. She was a member of St. Stephen Orthodox Church, Lake Mary. She enjoyed gardening and animals.
Survivors include two sons, John and William, both of DeLand, seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
William F. Norton
October 27, 1921 - August 26, 2007
Funeral Service for William F. Norton, 85, DeLand, who passed away August 26, 2007 at his home, will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Lankford Funeral Home Chapel, with the Reverend Ivan Corbin of Trinity United Methodist, officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. Calling hours are from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29 at the funeral home.
Mr. Norton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, served as an usher for many years and was a member of Local 756 Electrial Union.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtie D. Norton, DeLand; son, David F. (Patricia) Norton, Woodstock, GA and two granddaughters, Kimberly and Kelly Norton.
Robert Duane Hallum

Robert Duane Hallum, 59, of Yorktown Street, a truck driver for Roger Davis Trucking, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital DeLand. Mr. Hallum, an Army veteran of the Vietname War, was born in Albert Lea, Minn. He moved to this area in 1992 from Augusta, GA. He enjoyed working with antique cars and John Deere tractors.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Turner, Lincolnton, GA and Susan Andrews, North Augusta, SC; his mother, Elaine Bakken Hallum, Albert Lea; three brothers, Donald, DeLand, Richard, Louisville, KY and Ronald, Albert Lea; a sister, Donna Soper, Marshalltown, Iowa and three grandchildren.
Charles Alden Dunn, III
November 19, 1950 - August 17, 2007
Charles Alden Dunn III, 56, of North Ridgewood Avenue, a tax preparer for H&R Block, died Friday at home. A native of Tallapoosa, GA, Mr. Dunn, moved here from Washington , D.C., in 1972. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietname War.
Survivors include a brother, Michael of DeLand and a sister, Catherine Dunn of Alabama.
Rea Nadine Clark
February 18, 1926 - August 17, 2007
Rea Nadine Clark, 81, of Apaloosa Trail, a resident since 1967, died Friday, August 17, 2007 at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City. Mrs. Clark, a homemaker, was a native of Wichita, Kansas and moved to this area from Rhode Island. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, William; two daughters, Marcia Junghans and Sharon Clark, both of Deltona; two brothers, Gene McDonald, San Francisco and Gary McDonald, Palm Springs, CA; a sister, Bobbi Hansen, Deltona; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Meeda Orr Connor

Funeral service for Meeda Orr Connor, 91, W. Minnesota Avenue, who died August 17, 2007, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 1 p.m. Monday, August 20, at Lankford Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Grady Snowden officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, August 19, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand.
Meeda was born in Dublin, GA and moved to this area in 1960 from Hollywood, FL. She was a teacher at DeLand Junior High School. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Stetson University. She also taught at Daytona Beach Community College and the Volusia County Correctional Facility. She enjoyed gardening and was a Master Bridge Player.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Connor Livingston, DeLand; sister, Quessie Shultz, Georgia; brother, Wardell Orr, Texas , granddaughter, Vanessa Livingston, California; sister, Betty Orr, Florida. Maria Clarke

Memorial service for Maria Clarke, 78, Gracie Court, DeLand, who passed away August 16, 2007, at her son's home in DeLand, will be 4 p.m. Monday, August 20, at Lankford Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Bob Kinsey officiating.
Maria was born in Madrid, Spain and moved from there to this area in 1955. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand. She retired as a juggler and trapeze artist for the Clyde Beatty Cole Brothers Circus and Ringling Brothers Circus after 35 years.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Carlos Clarke (Melodee), DeLand; daughter, Maria Rawls, Mead, OK; grandsons, Chase Clarke, Palm Coast, Carson Clarke, DeLand; granddaughter, Melodee Rawls, and grandson, T.C. Rawls, both of Oklahoma; and great-granddaughter, Mya.

A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service for Anne Goldman will be held Saturday, August 25, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church of DeLand. The Rev. Owen R. Stricklin will be officiating. Anne Goldman, 79, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at Florida Hospital DeLand.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Susan Anne Shuman Toole; Susan's husband, William L. Toole, Sr.; granddaughter, Devin Melissa Toole, all of DeLand; grandson, William L. Toole, Jr., Ellabell, GA; her daughter, Kay Shuman Hermeling, Kay's husband, Theodore A. Hermeling, Jr., Fairfax, VA; grandson, Allen Hermeling, Allen's wife, Megan Hermeling, Ashburn, VA; grandson, Christopher Hermeling, Bethesda, MD; Anne's son, William H. Shuman, III, his wife, Kathye Shuman, grandson, William H. Shuman, IV, and twin granddaughters, Emily Anne Shuman and Natalie Margaret Shuman, all of Waynesvil1e, NC. Anne is also survived by her beloved dog, Fluffy. She is survived by her sister, Clyde Black Chivers Laney and Clyde's husband, Carl Laney, Eugene, OR; and a sister-in-law, Angelyne Chivers, Dublin GA; also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families. Anne was preceded in death by her mother, Jenny Clyde Black Chivers; her father, Otis Leaston Chivers, Sr.; her brother, Otis Leaston Chivers, Jr.; and her sisters, Amelia Jeanelle Chivers Wingard and Bonita June Chivers Garrison Bomboy.
Anne was born in Dublin, GA on December 9, 1927. The Black and Chivers families were prominent Georgia families that traced their heritage to pre-Civil War Between the States and the Battle of Atlanta. Family members participated in these historic wars. Anne was a member of Daughters of the American Confederacy (D.A.R.) of Georgia. Anne received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and her Master's Degree from the University of Georgia. She was an English Literature Professor in Georgia and also Chicago, IL. Anne lived many happy years with her husband, Dr. Stuart A. Goldman (now deceased) in Chicago. In Chicago they participated in many civic and social activities. Anne is survived in Chicago by many friends. Anne was a worldwide traveler.
In early 2006, Anne moved to DeLand, FL to live with her daughter, Susan, Susan's husband, Bill, and their daughter, Devin Toole. She delighted in returning to her Southern heritage and developed many friendships in DeLand. A special highlight for Anne was joining the First Methodist Church of DeLand. Anne will be remembered as a loving mother. Anne will also be remembered for her wit, her humor, her intelligence, and her unparalleled and fascinating conversations. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations may be made to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (P.E.T.A.), the Humane Society, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (A.S.P.C.A.) or any charity of choice.
Sophie Roberts Saunders
September 7, 1932 - August 15, 2007
Sophie Roberts Saunders, born September 7, 1932, in Key West, Fla., a third generation "Conch," died August 15, 2007, at her residence. She was a resident of DeLand and Steinhatchee. She was the loving wife of 58 years of Leon Saunders and loving mother to Marilyn Mancinik (Bill), DeLand, Marlene Thomas (Kevin), New Smyrna Beach, and Maureen Kemp (Chris), DeLand. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Shelley Mancinik Mead (John), Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Christopher Rae and Kyrie Thomas, both of New Smyrna Beach, and Justin and Johnathan Kemp, DeLand, along with several other surviving family members in Key West and Florida.
Together with her husband, Sophie owned Lower Keys Plumbing of Key West and Colonial Plumbing of DeLand until 1993. She was a loving and generous woman, kind to all she met. Our loss is heaven's gain.
Service of remembrance will be held Saturday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at Plymouth Avenue Christian Church with the Rev. Chuck Hassel officiating. Also officiating will be Pastor Ron Coward of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Steinhatchee, FL. Entombment will take place at the Key West City Cemetery, Key West, on Monday, August 20.
