Mr. John "Kenney" Bowen, 52, of Panama City Beach, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his home. Born in Atlanta, Ga., he moved here in 1988 from Conyers, Ga. He was a member of Springfield Community Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a member of the National Society of Mechanical Engineers and the AMVETS. Mr. Bowen is survived by his mother, Ann Bowen of Panama City Beach; one son, Daimien Bowen of Conyers, Ga.; two daughters, Tara Nolte of California and Stephnie Bowen of Conyers; two brothers, Chuck and Mike Bowen both of Panama City Beach; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Hill Haven Memory Gardens in Monroe, Ga.

WILLIE 'BILL' DIXON
Mr. Willie "Bill" Dixon, 85, of 137 Transmitter Road, Springfield, Fla., died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his home. He was a native of Montgomery County, Ala., but had been a resident of Bay County for many years. Bro. Willie "Bill" Dixon became a member of Second Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church many years ago and continued in fellowship until his death. He was born to Mr. Rufus Dixon Sr. and Mrs. Melissa Wright Dixon, and to that union was born ten children, six brothers and four sisters. He has one surviving brother, Mr. Calvin Dixon Sr. of Buffalo, N.Y.; and one sister, Mrs. Pinkie L. Pryor (David) of Orlando. Bro. Willie Dixon has seven brothers and sisters that preceded him in death. He has surviving nephews and nieces. The nephews are Mr. Byron Clark (Mary), Mr. Calvin Dixon Jr., both of Panama City, Mr. Michael A. Doby (D'Jaune) of Orlando, Mr. James Dixon of Louisiana. The nieces are Ms. Minnie Carol Dixon of Dothan, Mrs. Connie Bethune (Milton) of Montgomery, Mrs. Patricia McAfee (Lawrence), Ms. Darlene McCann both of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Gloria Campbell (Caswell) of Clearwater, Minn., Jaunita Carson of Orlando; and many othe relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Dixon will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. in Second Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Redwood Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church.

HELEN L. EVANS
Mrs. Helen L. Evans, 96, of 620 Old Forest Way, Panama City, Fla., died Monday morning, Sept. 11, 2000, in National Healthcare Center where she had resided since October of 1997. Born in Michigan, she had been a resident of Bay County for the past eight years, moving here from Crystal River, Fla. She lived in Crystal River for 23 years after retiring from school teaching at Indian River High School in Michigan. She and her husband, the late Dr. James A. Evans, who passed away in April of 1992, lived in Cheboygan, Mich., for 40 years and were active in the St. James Episcopal Church and the Cheboygan Golf Course. She was very active in St. Anne Episcopal Church in Crystal River and the Seven Rivers Country Club. She was a member of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Panama City. Mrs. Evans is survived by one son, William Evans and wife Virginia of Brighton, Mich.; one daughter, Nancy A. Hebert and husband Richard of Panama City; six grandchildren, James Hebert and wife Kelly, Robert Hebert, Ann Metzler, Beth Austin and husband Kevin, Bonny Avis and husband Jake, William Evans Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Ashley. A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. in Holy Nativity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. John Richardson officiating. Graveside services will be held on Friday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in Crystal River Cemetery

Mrs. Gladys C. Fitts, age 77, of 2121 Harrison Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at a local nursing facility. She had been a resident of the area since 1966, coming here from Mobile, Ala. Mrs. Fitts was an executive secretary for the Red Cross in Mobile and was Methodist by faith. She loved to fish and loved flowers and gardening. Mrs. Fitts is survived by her husband, Cecil Fitts of Panama City; daughters, Carroll Delane Anderson and her husband William of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Faye Dorman and her husband Randy of Panama City, Fla.; sisters, Maggie Davis, Ellie Seale and Sadie Mills, all of Moundville, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Bill Anderson, Mike Anderson, Lisa Mehm and Jason Dorman. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Interment will follow. Nila Darlene Franklin, 36, of 18912 Front Beach Road, Panama City Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, in her home. She had been a resident of Bay County for 30 years. She was a housekeeper for a beach resort. She is survived by her five children, Anthony Joshua Barnes, Tabitha Ann Barnes, Candy Lee Barnes, Joseph Dean Barnes, Darlene Nichol Franklin; father and mother, Okey and Olive Lemon; husband, James Eugene Franklin; brother, Scott Lemon; four sisters, Dian Fraser, Billie Ritter, Carolyn Lemon, Pam Kowalski; companion, Joe Buckland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ruby Louise Grimes, age 85, of 831 N. Star Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at a local nursing facility. She had been a resident of the area for 12 years, coming here from Bowling Green, Fla. Mrs. Grimes was a member of Carlisle Baptist Church. She enjoyed her family and loved her children, grandchildren and also her nursing work. Mrs. Grimes is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Boyd and her husband Joe of Panama City, Patricia Grimes of Jacksonville, and Delilah Ballard and her husband Larry of Brookesville, Fla.; two sons, Thomas Frederick "Fred" Grimes of Port Lavaca, Texas, and Oris Thomas "Tommy" Grimes Jr. of Fort Meade, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. HOWELL WALL HERRIN
Mr. Howell Wall Herrin, 75, of Southport, Fla., died Monday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2000, in a local hospital. Born in New Orleans, La., he moved here in 1964 from Daytona Beach, Fla. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was also retired from Sears after 15 years of service and was Catholic by faith. His father, Willie Herrin, precedes him in death. Mr. Herrin is survived by his wife, Victoria C. Herrin of Southport; his mother, Gertrude Henry of Long Beach, Miss.; two sons, Dennis William Herrin and and wife Janie of Homosassa, Fla, Howell Wall Herrin Jr. of Auburndale, Fla.; four grandchildren, Vickie Herrin, John Herrin, Andrew Lockwood and Abigail Ruth Herrin. Margaret Elease McCullough, 92, of 149 Avenue B, Port St. Joe, passed away Sept. 8, 2000, at Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama City. She had been a resident of Port St. Joe for seventy years, and became a member of Zion Fair Baptist Church at an early age. She was preceded in death by five children and her late husband, Mr. Malachi McCullough. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Gloria Jean McCullough of Port St. Joe; three granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three nephews, eight nieces, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Zion Fair Baptist Church at 2 p.m. EDT, with interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. She will lie in state at the church today from 6 to 8 p.m.
