Sylvester, Carolyn M.

Carolyn M. Sylvester of Townsend, DE passed away at home Thursday July 1, 2010.

She was 62.

Mrs. Sylvester was born November 13, 1947 in Wilmington, DE the daughter of the late Francis and Mildred Miller Duncan.

She retired as a clerk in the Wilmington Court System and later drove a school bus for 22 years for the Smyrna School District.

Mrs. Sylvester was a member of the Blackbird Community Center and her hobbies included traveling, doing word searches, playing bingo and having long phone conservations with her friends and family, especially phone calls to her daughters at work.

She was an avid Phillies fan and enjoyed her swimming pool.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and William Duncan.

She is survived by her husband, Lee F. Sylvester; two daughters, Kerri Hollyday and her husband, John of Townsend and Sherri Sylvester and her fiancée, Corey of Dover, DE; two sisters, Kathleen Hackendorn of New Castle, DE and Mildred Collins of Smyrna; a brother, Joseph Duncan of Townsend; her mother and father-in-law, Regina and Leland Sylvester of Townsend; a grandson, Sebastian Hollyday and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday July 8, 2010 at 12:30pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Bear, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Newark, DE 19713.

Gardner Downs, Dorothy Louise

Dorothy Louise Gardner Downs age 90 died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Kent General Hospital, Dover, Delaware surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 2, 1919 the daughter of William Stidham Gardner and Almira Bell Gardner. She graduated from Smyrna High School in 1937 and from Beacom College, now Goldy Beacom College, in 1938. She worked as a secretary for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1930's and 1940's and as a secretary for the OSI at Dover Air Base in the 1950's. She married the love of her life, Earl Roberts Downs, in 1942 and they lived in Smyrna, Delaware.

She made planting and promoting of Delaware trees especially the Holly tree a priority. She was the first woman chairperson of the Governor's Forestry Advisory Council and in that role she was instrumental in winning the National "Take Pride in America" contest. She was appointed to the Forestry Council by Governor's DuPont, Governor Castle, and Governor Carper serving for 14 years. She organized the planting of hundreds of trees throughout Delaware. She was a President of the State Federation of Woman's Clubs and wrote a book about this wonderful organization. As a former Board member and trustee for the Kalmar Nykle Foundaton, another of her passions, she raised funds and wrote letters to get the ship built. She was also a loyal member of the Delaware Historical Society, the Delaware Nature Society, Asbury Methodist Church, and Faith Family Church, and JBM/SHS Alumni Association. She was named a distinguished Alumni of Goldy Beacom College.

Dorothy Downs was a role model for her family and friends. She loved her country, the American flag, and the Republican Party. She was a faithful follower of Jesus becoming a believer very early in her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl Roberts Downs who died in 1990 and her sister Ella Mae Gardner Hurst. She is survived by her daughter Debbie Wicks and her husband George Wicks, III, her grandchildren George Wicks, III, and his wife Benita, Patti Bishop and her husband Charlie, Katie Wilber and her husband Eric, and her great grandchildren Brandon Bishop, Sam Wicks, Sophia Wicks, Madeline Wilber, Alivia Wilber, Isabella Wicks, Ryla Wilber, Jacob Wilber, and Evangeline Wicks. Nephews Elliott Downs and his wife Sue, Kevin Downs and his wife Pat, Art Hurst and his wife Susan and the late Alex Hurst.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, Delaware. Visitation will be Sunday night, May 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Monday at 12:00.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, DE.

Morrison, David W.

David W. Morrison of Smyrna, Delaware passed away peacefully at home Sunday February 28, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.

He was 65.

Dave was born July 30, 1944 in Lancaster, PA, the son of the late Harold and Charlotte Busser Morrison.

He started his professional career as a Social Studies Teacher and football coach in the Smyrna School District.

Following his career in teaching, he worked as the Regional Director of the Young Adult Conservation Corp in the United States Department of Interior.

Dave was also a co-owner of B&D; Deli and Seafood Restaurant in Smyrna and retired as the Smyrna School District Transportation Supervisor.

He served in the United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Dave was a former President of the Smyrna School Board.

He was an avid gardener, cook and Phillies fan.

Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Whitehall Neck Sportsman's Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Landis.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anita (Terrell) Morrison; a son, David H. Morrison and his wife, Debra of Dover, DE; a daughter, Heather (Morrison) McCoy and her husband, Andrew of Smyrna; a brother, Harold Morrison and his wife, Thelma of Emmaus, PA; a sister, Blanche Clime and her husband, Jack of Mountville, PA; a beloved sister, Eunice Reinhart and her husband, Stephen of Millersville, PA; his beloved friend, Ron Eby of Smyrna and his grandchildren, Zachary, Andrew, Abigail and Jordan; his special nieces, Sherlyn, Lynn, Dawn, Michele, Jodi and Jennifer; a nephew, Steven and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Thursday March 4, 2010 at 7pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call from 4 to 7pm.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702-B Kirkwood Highway Wilmington, DE 19805 or to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way Suite 205 New Castle, DE 19720.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Collins, Shirley R. "Shirl"

Shirley R. Collins "Shirl" of Townsend, DE passed away on Thursday July 29, 2010 in Cadia Rehabilitation Pike Creek in Wilmington, DE.

She was 77.

Mrs. Collins was born July 20, 1933 in Trooper, PA the daughter of the late Malcolm Lockhoff and Mary Eddinger Lockhoff.

Mrs. Collins retired as a Production Supervisor for Vlasic Foods in Millsboro, DE.

She enjoyed crafts and flower gardening.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her loving family and friends.

Memorial services will be Tuesday August 3, 2010 at 12 noon in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be private.

Virdin, Elizabeth F.

Elizabeth F. Virdin of Smyrna, Delaware passed away Tuesday June 8, 2010.

She was 96.

Mrs. Virdin was born May 25, 1914 in Smyrna, the daughter of the late Arthur and Sarah Price Bennett.

She worked on her farm in the Whitehall Neck area for most of her life and was an avid gardener.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Virdin in 1976.

Mrs. Virdin is survived by a son, Harry A. Virdin and his wife, Ann of Smyrna; two daughters, Jane V. Davis and her husband, J. Irving Davis of Clayton, DE and Doris Virdin Carrow of Smyrna; her grandchildren, Deborah A. Virdin, Harry A. Virdin, Jr., Victor Lee Virdin, Jay Davis, Walter Carrow, Jr., Robert D. Carrow and his wife, Teresa, Daniel V. Carrow and his wife, Gail, A. David Carrow, Dora Carrow Wisniewski and her husband, Jack and Alisa Carrow Bentley; 15 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday June 12, 2010 at 1:30pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park Dover, DE.
