James A. Lofink

Age 93, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2011 at Manor Care Health Services.

Born in Wilmington, James was the son of the late Phillip J. and Joanna (McDermott) Lofink. During World War II, he served his nation in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. He worked for the US Postal Service for 41 years before his retirement. He was predeceased by two sisters, Phyllis and Jane Lofink and a brother, Joseph Lofink.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Viola (Rollo) Lofink; his son and daughter-in-law, Vincent Lofink and Janet Kilpatrick of Hockessin, DE; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Carl Jones of Massey, MD; six grandchildren, Brian Lofink and his wife, Michelle McClafferty, Michael, Anthony and Richard Lofink, Janet Jones and her life partner, Georgie Aquirre-Sacasa and Randolph Jones and his wife, Rachel; and a great granddaughter, Viola Jean Jones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 20th at 11 AM at Christ Our King Church, 28th and Madison Streets, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 10 AM. Interment will be private.

Geraldine Bernadette Burkel

Geraldine Bernadette Burkel, 52, of Newark, Delaware, died at home with her family on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 of natural causes. Gerri was born in Wilmington, Delaware on June 18, 1958. Daughter of Anna Mae and Frederick Barry Ventura. Her husband, Deny J. Burkel, predeceased her in May of 2010. She will be greatly missed by her brother Michael James Ventura; sons Frank Christopher Cario Jr. and Thomas Fredrick Burkel of Newark DE, Anthony Ryan Cario of Philadelphia, PA; her step-daughters Claire Francine Cario of Brooklyn, NY, and Aimee Madison Cario of Philadelphia, PA.

A devoted mom, Gerri derived her greatest joy from being with her loved ones, whether it was around her swimming pool, or in her kitchen, as long as she was with them. Her kind spirit was shared with all, always opening her heart and home for anyone in need. Her optimistic view of life gave strength and hope to others and her sunny disposition, smile and laughter will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have had her in their life.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 8th at 11am at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, where friends are invited to visitation after 10am. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery; in lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Thomas F. Burkel Education Fund, care of Wilmington Trust Co., 2371 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19808 or to any Wilmington Trust Branch.

Betty F. Edwards

May 17, 1928 - January 10, 2011

Betty F. Edwards, age 82, of Heritage Park, Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, after a brief illness.

She was born in Pottsville, PA, the daughter of the late Henry and Eva Eichenberg. Betty graduated from West Chester State Teacher's College in 1949 with a B.S. in elementary education. She began her teaching career in Reading & West Chester, PA, before getting married to the late Richard J. Edwards in 1951. They moved to Kennett Square, PA where they began raising their family & made many lifelong friends & created many fond memories. The Edwards family moved to Heritage Park in 1964. In Delaware, Betty was a substitute teacher for the Stanton School District before becoming a full time employee of Red Clay Consolidated School District. At the time of her retirement in 1990, she was employed at H.B. DuPont Middle School.

Betty loved to travel, was a regular at the 76er/Dutch Pantry, and was an avid supporter of Duke basketball, Nascar, the Philadelphia Phillies & Eagles. She frequently had enjoyable lunches with her college roommates and retired teaching friends.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 26 years, Richard J. Edwards (1977), her son R. Mark Edwards (2006) and her sister Eve D. Rose. She is survived by her daughters Barbara (Hershal) Deputy of Hot Sulphur Springs, CO, Nancy (Jeff) Johnson of Lincoln University, PA, Beth (Lloyd) Powell of Wilmington, DE, and Donna (Paul) Guglielmo of Wilmington, DE. Also surviving are her grandchildren, John, Kate, Grace, Ryan, Lauren, Palmer, Andrew, & Jason. She also leaves behind her devoted companion of 28 years, Raymond Connors. Betty took great pride in the love and support of her close-knit family.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Gregory Masters of Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Friday, January 14, between 6-8 pm, at MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington where funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 10 am. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.

Coverdale, Dorothea R.

HARRINGTON - Dorothea R. Coverdale, of Harrington, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, in the Silver Lake Center of Dover. She was 94. She is the daughter of the late Elmira Truitt and her step-father Joseph Truitt.

Mrs. Coverdale worked as a beautician with her aunt for many years when she was younger. She later worked for McCrorys of Dover where she met her husband who winked at her from across the street. From that wink it became a 45 year marriage which started on Nov. 23, 1938, at Asbury Church in Harrington by Rev. Green.

When the kids were grown Mrs. Coverdale sold Avon for 30 years where she made many friends. She was the matriarch of the family farm. She owned, trained and raced Standardbred horses for 45 years. She had many memorable sleigh rides behind "Sinco." When she and her husband went to the races, Dorothea drove the truck coming and going. When women were not allowed to stay on the track, Dorothea was there.

She loved cooking and loved to read and collect cook books. Mrs. Coverdale was once featured on Scorchy Tawes for her cookbook collection of over 300. One of her favorite hobbies was crocheting rag rugs. She loved gardening, flowers, canning for her family, and being outdoors. She exhibited many years at Delaware State Fair. She loved her animals and always had a dog or cat in the house.

Mrs. Coverdale was a very strong willed person who stuck by her words. She loved and treasured her in-laws. Mrs. Coverdale belonged to the Harrington Historical Society, U.S. Trotting Association, Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners Association, and the Harrington Senior Center.

The family wants to thank the staff at Silver Lake Nursing Home for the wonderful care they gave to Dorothea.

She is proceeded in death by her husband, Lindale Coverdale; and grandson, James "Dickie" Sullivan.

She is survived by son and daughter in-law, Mike and Cindy Coverdale of Harrington; daughters and son in-law, Karen Sullivan of Felton, MaryLou and Leroy Betts of Felton; grandchildren, Randy and Connie Sullivan of Felton, Abby Betts and fiance Thomas C. Roberts of Felton, Bruce and Kay Betts of Felton, Ben and Jennifer Coverdale of Harrington, Brett Coverdale of Harrington; great-grandchildren, Whitney Ellen and Ridgley Brock Betts of Felton, and Emily and Joseph Sullivan of Felton.

Services will be Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at 1 p.m. in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be one hour prior. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Donations can be made to the Harrington Senior Center, 102 Fleming St., Harrington, DE 19952.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Bellois Glover, Doris H.

Doris H. Bellois-Glover, of Frederica, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2010 peacefully in her home, she was 88.

Born on December 18, 1921 in Huntington, NY, Doris was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Charlotte (Klein) Euler.

Doris was Past President of the VFW Post 9263 of Commack, NY, and Past President of the Golden Years Senior Citizens Club of Greenville, NY. Doris Loved her flowers, doing crafts and most important her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen R. Bellois; second husband, Harry R. Glover; son, Robert Otha Bellois; and sister, Ruth G. Meissner.

Survivors include daughter, Diane R. (Bellois) Hile of Kernersville, NC; son and daughter in law, Phillip H. and Shirley Bellois of Felton; daughter in law, Katherine Bellois of Huntington, NY; god son, Gary Meissner of Indiana; grandchildren, Dana Parris, Elizabeth Hile, Jennifer Pepe, Michelle Bellois, Amanda Roberts, Brian Bellois, Jeremy Bellois; and great grandchildren, Eric Richard Hile, Christopher Pepe, Angela Pepe, Zachary Ryan Powell, Tyler Roberts, Allen Robert Bellois.

As per her wishes, she was cremated and interment will be scheduled at a later date in Northport, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Delaware Hospice in memory of Doris, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Arrangements are handles through Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South Dupont Hwy., Harrington.

George C. Pulleyn, 66

DOVER — George C. Pulleyn, of Dover, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Kent General Hospital. He was 66.

He was born in Caribou, Maine, to Arthur E. and Winifred Pulleyn.

George had a very infectious smile and made friends easily. He was loved by all. He enjoyed his friends and the activities they did together. George was always happy, well liked, loved his parents and his nieces and nephews. He had a special bond with his nephew, Todd.

He was a former resident of Stockley Center for a number of years, and then was one of the first residents at KenCrest Center on Walker Road. George was an avid collector of hats.

His father was in the Air Force, and when George was younger he traveled with his parents all over the world.

In addition to his parents, George is survived by brothers, Philip B. Pulleyn and wife Margaret of Greensboro, Md., and Donald A. Pulleyn of Smyrna; nephews and nieces, Schuyler and Megan Pulleyn of Millington, Md., Todd Pulleyn of Greensboro, and Emily Pulleyn of Greensboro, Md.

Family wishes to extend a special thanks to his caregivers and friends who came to visit him during his illness. They were special people to George.

Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, where a visitation one hour prior. Interment will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery.

Family requests donations in George's memory to The ARC of Delaware, 2 S. Augustine St., Suite B, Wilmington, DE 19804.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
